The 10 Most Watched Shows Of 2025 Should Scare Netflix

The Pitt The numbers are being tallied, and ratings agency Nielsen has come up with the most-watched streaming shows in 2025, at least halfway through the year. The report is out via Bloomberg, and while a number of these are not likely to shock you, there are definitely some interesting surprises to be found. One story? Netflix is losing its total dominance in the space. In 2024, Netflix had 7 of the top 10 streaming series in the Nielsen list. This first half of 2025? They have four. Here's the list: Landman 10. Landman (Paramount+) – 7.8 million minutes watched – This is only the second debut season of a show that appears on this list, which should tell you something. This was a massive premiere for Paramount+, combining the charismatic Billy Bob Thornton with a traditionally blue collar Taylor Sheridan storyline. It worked well, it's obviously coming back for more. You 9. You (Netflix) – 8.09 million minutes watched – I did not hear that many people talking about the You season finale, but given that this has been almost a decade in the making, it's not a huge surprise to see how the serial killer story ended. But the finale got a whole lot of hate, even if it's not quite a Dexter situation. Handmaid's Tale 8. The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu) – 8.16 million minutes watched – Hulu's only show on the list and I am not exaggerating when I say I thought this show ended years ago. That's because it was literally years between the last two seasons, but enough people returned to make this a big moment for Hulu. The Pitt 7. The Pitt (HBO Max) – 8.22 million minutes watched – This is HBO Max's only entry, which is not a surprise, but I would almost expect it to be higher, despite being the other debut season besides Landman. A) this was a phenomenon in the US, without question about B) it's 15 episodes long which should increase watchtime by itself. Season 2 will air just six months from now in January 2026. 1923 6. 1923 (Paramount+) – 8.53 million minutes watched – One of the lessons here is that Paramount+ should be taken more seriously as it's putting up big shows with big numbers. Besides Netflix, it's the only service with two shows on the list, including the second season of the Yellowstone prequel drama here. Severance 5. Severance (Apple TV+) – 9.27 million minutes watched – Speaking of phenomenon, after three years, Severance season 2 finally arrived and captivated audiences. Despite Apple TV+'s minimal market share, this blasted past that to become a huge hit. Hopefully it's not three years until season 3. Ginny and Georgia 4. Ginny & Georgia (Netflix) – 10.2 million minutes watched – Another interminably long wait for Ginny and Georgia season 3 made it a must-watch when it returned for viewers. It may be Netflix's most popular non-action-based series, and it has already been pre-renewed for season 4. The Night Agent 3. The Night Agent (Netflix) – 12.2 million minutes watched – I would consider this a sleeper series on Netflix, as it puts up enormous viewership with relatively little social fanfare. It's the definition of 'watchable,' not especially amazing, but appealing enough to a broad population to become really, really popular. Reacher season 3 2. Reacher (Amazon Prime Video) – 13.3 million minutes watched – Reacher's a monster, and not just physically. I don't think people understand this. This is a show that more or less does not leave the Amazon Prime Video top 10 list really…ever. I've seen this show go to #1 on the service 3-5 months after its last season ended. It's just huge. Squid Game 1. Squid Game (Netflix) – 15.07 million minutes watched – No shock here. Squid Game season 3 set early viewership records for Netflix, its most-watched program in a short amount of time, and has already become its third most-watched non-English show ever, along with breaking into the overall top 10. There was not a real question about whether it would be here. However, the rest of 2026 will include Wednesday season 2 and Stranger Things season 5, which will duel for the overall crown, I believe. Billy Bob Thornton Reveals He Was Cut From 1990 Horror Film 'Misery'

Billy Bob Thornton revealed he was cut from the movie Misery, but it was done in a 'cool' way. In an interview for Variety, the actor told Kathy Bates that he was originally cast for the iconic film that she starred in 35 years ago. Bates won an Oscar for her role as Annie Wilkes in the 1990 psychological thriller. 'There was a time I went in and read for Rob Reiner for Misery,' Thornton revealed to a stunned Bates. 'I swear to God. Originally, Richard Farnsworth, who played the sheriff, had a deputy. I saw Rob Reiner for it. And Rob said right in the room, 'You're the guy. We can send everybody else home.'' Thornton said he was 'very excited'—until he got an unexpected call from Reiner soon after. 'Not many directors would do this,' Thornton noted. 'He called me and he said, 'Listen, I've been looking at the script and been planning out what I'm going to do with this movie.' He said, 'You can come up here and shoot this for the money or the insurance or whatever you need, but I'm just telling you, it's not going to be in the movie. …I don't want you to come up here expecting that this is going to be in the movie. And I didn't want you to be disappointed.' He said, 'But I'll leave it up to you. Do you want to come shoot it anyway?' And I said, 'No.'' 'I thought that was very cool of him,' Thornton added. At the 2025 TCM Classic Film Festival, Reiner revealed that he knew Bates was perfect for the role of evil nurse Annie Wilkes as soon as she auditioned for the part. Casting her victim, played by James Caan, was not as easy, the director said, per IndieWire. Reiner revealed that William Hurt, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Harrison Ford, Dustin Hoffman, Michael Douglas, Robert Redford, Kevin Kline, and Gene Hackman all turned down the role of novelist Paul Sheldon. As for Thornton, while he never made it to Misery, the actor has worked with Bates on several occasions. The two co-starred in the 1998 Mike Nichols comedy-drama Primary Colors (Reiner also appeared in the film). In 2016, Bates played Sunny, the estranged mother of Thornton's character, Willie, in Bad Santa Bob Thornton Reveals He Was Cut From 1990 Horror Film 'Misery' first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 16, 2025

Why commodities are on a rollercoaster ride

According to Tommy Norris—a tough oilman with a complicated love life, played by Billy Bob Thornton in 'Landman'—the ideal price for a barrel of oil is $78. At that level, he explains, producers make a healthy profit and have spare money for exploration, while consumers are broadly comfortable. Today the price of Brent crude, the global benchmark, is $65. Not only is that too low for Mr Norris, it is also too volatile: in recent weeks prices have swung in response to missiles in the Middle East.

Seth Meyers recalls Billy Bob Thornton confronting 'SNL' lighting director: 'You got something to say?

Nobody, even SNL's lighting director, is going to tell Billy Bob Thornton where he can or can't wear a baseball cap. Seth Meyers recalls a face-off between longtime lighting director Phil Hymes and Thornton when Thornton hosted in 2001. Ultimately, Meyers said the two had a civil conversation after their initial from New York, it's a Billy Bob Thornton fight! On this week's episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers podcast, Seth Meyers recalled a tense moment between the actor and longtime Saturday Night Live lighting director Phil Hymes. "Billy Bob Thornton was hosting and he was running his monologue wearing his baseball hat," Meyers recalled. "And Phil Hymes came up out on the floor and said to someone else, 'Somebody tell him to take his hat off.'" Apparently, Thornton overheard the remark and retorted, "Hey old man, if you've got something to say, say it to my face," according to Meyers. Andy Samberg, who cohosts the podcast, was well-known for his Thornton impression on the sketch show. So, he helped Meyers with his telling of the story by imitating the Oscar winner. Hymes served as lighting director on the show from Saturday Night Live's from the show's second season in 1976 until early 2018, spending nearly 42 years with the comedy hit. Meyers noted that Hymes, well-known as an irascible backstage figure, often liked to remind the cast that he'd once lit President John F. Kennedy in the White House. Meyers, who served as the show's head writer from 2006 to 2014, also took care to stress that the confrontation wasn't as public as it might sound. "Now I also want to clarify Billy Bob Thornton did not do this in front of everybody," Meyers added. "He walked off stage and he went and talked to Phil Hymes, real man to man. "I never saw Phil do this," Meyers continued. "Phil had a real 'I apologize' moment. There was a real like two decent men of honor [exchange]." Akiva Schaffer, another member of The Lonely Island, quipped, "Just two guys meeting at high noon, deciding not to fight," referencing the iconic Gary Cooper film High Noon. Whatever truce that Thornton and Hymes reached, it appears that Thornton got his way. Footage of Thornton's monologue from his time hosting the show on Nov. 17, 2001, makes it clear that Thornton did indeed wear a baseball cap during his monologue, in which he entertained questions from audience members imitating his Sling Blade appearance on season 27 of SNL remains his only outing on the show (not counting Samberg's impressions of him). Hymes was well-known for commenting on things he didn't like. He earned Lady Gaga's respect after commenting on her wardrobe and, in her words, "telling the truth," and he reportedly nearly caused Kanye West to walk off the show after a dispute about set pieces. Hymes won his first Emmy at the age of 95 in 2018. He died at the age of 96 in 2019. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly
