Liverpool chief breaks silence on Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid and reveals his disappointment behind the decision
Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has revealed what he really thought about Trent Alexander-Arnold 's controversial decision to join Real Madrid. The defender caused uproar among the Reds fan base when he revealed he would be leaving the club for Spain, with it initially looking like he would be departing for free after a 20-year stay at his boyhood club. However, Arne Slot 's side did secure a £10million fee from Madrid for Alexander-Arnold to join them early and therefore play in the Club World Cup. Nevertheless, many Liverpool fans were left incensed by Alexander-Arnold's move, as they believe it was done in bad faith and did not leave the club with sufficient funds to replace him. And now, Werner has conceded that he and other club chiefs shared the disappointment of many fans. The 75-year-old businessman diplomatically thanked Alexander-Arnold for his contributions, but could not completely hide his emotions. 'We do respect the fact that Trent has moved on,' Werner told Liverpool Echo. 'I told someone recently this story about seeing Trent on the last weekend of the season, with Billy [Hogan, chief executive] and I just wanted him to know from me personally we are and were as a club thankful for all his contributions. 'He showed me a picture when he was seven years old, when he was a young kid at the academy, and I have a lot of fondness for all that he has done and so it is time for him to move and time for us to replace him. 'We do wish him well and I understand the emotions of supporters who were disappointed and we were disappointed too but it is overshadowed by my wonderful memories of him.' Werner went on to share a standout memory of Alexander-Arnold in red, and reminisced over his assist to Divock Origi in the 2019 Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. Alexander-Arnold quickly took a corner to catch Barca's defence napping, which was tapped in by Origi. The goal sealed a historic 4-0 win at Anfield and overturned a three-goal deficit from the first leg. 'I'll never forget that pass he made, the corner he took, for the fourth goal against Barcelona. 'That was just a work of genius and as a football fan, watching some of his assists, the way he would pass the ball 30-plus yards to a specific point and create a goal was wonder Real Madrid are delighted.'

Meath stun Kerry with nine-point win to claim All-Ireland quarter-final place
Meath 1-22 Kerry 0-16 Paul Brennan reports from Tullamore A SHOCK TO say the least as Meath turned Kerry over by nine points in Tullamore to top Group 2 and take themselves straight to Croke Park in a fortnight for the All-Ireland quarter-finals. For Kerry it will be a home preliminary quarter-final in Killarney next weekend, but a whole pile of soul-searching between here and there as they wonder where it all went wrong. An obvious place to start would be with their walking wounded – Sean O'Shea joining with Paudie Clifford, Paul Geaney, Diarmuid O'Connor, Barry Dan O'Sullivan and Brian O Beaglaoich on the treatment table – as Kerry's injury list seems to grow by the day. Quite who they will have available for next week's game remains to be seen, but Jack O'Connor might have as much work to do above his players' necks as below. Whatever about Kerry's woes, this was all about Meath and their renaissance under Robbie Brennan. Exactly a year ago Meath were mugged by 15 points by Kerry in Navan; in Tullamore they were once bitten, twice shy. Meath had Cathal Hickey sin binned 30 seconds into the second half but Kerry only took a point off Meath's lead by the time he returned. By the 50th minute Kerry were within two points, 0-16 to 0-14, but not exactly pulling up trees, while Meath never flinched as Kerry breathed down their necks. Kinsella pointed from play, then within two minutes Kinsella and Duke scored two-pointers, and then Menton raised the game's only green flag. Meath ahead by 10 points with 13 minutes left to play. The Meath supporters in the 8,265 crowd not wanting it to end; the Kerry players on their knees by the time the final hooter sounded. Virgil van Dijk ‘praying for speedy recovery' for those hurt in parade incident
Merseyside Police said a 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs after a car struck pedestrians on Water Street, close to where the parade had finished, with more than 50 people injured – including one child who was seriously hurt. As of Tuesday afternoon, 11 people remained in hospital and were said to be in stable condition. More than 50 people were initially taken to hospital, with others treated at the scene. Van Dijk wrote on an Instagram Story: 'My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected. Praying for a speedy recovery for everyone who suffered injuries. We are all with you.' Van Dijk's team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was born and grew up in West Derby close to the club's former Melwood training ground, expressed his sympathies on Instagram, adding: 'The city will continue to pull together as it always does.' Fellow Scouser and former captain Steven Gerrard wrote on Instagram he was 'shocked, sickened, and saddened'. Ex-Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, who attended Sunday's game against Crystal Palace and watched Monday's parade from close to where the incident would later occur, said his family were 'shocked and devastated'. Footage of the incident circulating online appeared to show people in the crowd following Liverpool's celebrations attempting to get close to the driver of the car, with one managing to open the driver's door. Videos then appeared to show the driver close the car door before suddenly speeding up and veering into pedestrians on both sides of the crowded street. Officers quickly surrounded the car as witnesses attempted to stop the driver, who was eventually detained by police. Klopp, who attended Sunday's Premier League game against Crystal Palace and watched Monday's parade from near to where the incident occurred, said that had destroyed 'one of the greatest days in the history of the city', after he was inducted into the League Managers Association Hall of Fame 1,000 Club on Tuesday. 'And from one second to another everything changed and we learned again there are more serious things in the world than football.
