Wrexham and Sheffield United renew rivalry after 'disrespect' jibe

Wrexham are now back in the Championship and will take on Sheffield United after some bad blood came out of their FA Cup clash several seasons ago where Billy Sharp after accused them of disrespect Wrexham and Sheffield United will renew their rivalry this season in the Championship after an epic FA Cup saga that ended with the Welsh side being accused of "disrespect". Back then Ryan Reynolds ' outfit were a non-league outfit, but pushed the Blades all the way in the FA Cup, eventually losing in a replay at Bramall Lane. They will square off again at the Racecourse Ground on Boxing Day with the return fixture being played on March 21. ‌ Wrexham were denied a famous win in the fourth round of the FA Cup when John Egan headed in a 95th minute equaliser to tie up a six-goal thriller in Wales. Paul Mullin's strike in the 86th minute looked like it might win the day, but that wasn't the case. ‌ Back in Yorkshire and Sheffield United, three leagues above their opponents were eventually able to get the job done. Mullin's penalty had made the game 1-1 and it looked set for extra-time. That was until stoppage time when the Championship side scored twice through Sander Berge and then Billy Sharp to break Welsh hearts. A stellar set of cup matches had grabbed the attention, but Sharp added fuel to the fire after. The Blades' frontman said: "I've got a smile on my face because we've got through to the next round of the cup and the boys deserved it." He said that with anything but a smile on his face. 'It was a great cup tie over two games. They played excellent. I think they've been disrespectful, though – a few things before the game, thinking they were already through. I'm glad we've beaten them. They're doing well in their league, we're doing well in ours. I wasn't happy with a few of their players tonight, but that's it now – we've got one over on them tonight. Good luck to them for promotion, and hopefully we've put that one to bed now. 'A few of their players, I wasn't happy with. Little bit frustrated at the end there – I probably should have put the game to bed before I did. It's one of those things. I want to win and I want to get through to the next round.' ‌ Sharp was pressed on what had rattled him and seemed to hint at a tweet put out by Wrexham. The fifth round draw had been made with the non-league side tagging potential opponents Tottenham, even before they'd seen off the Sheffield outfit. Which clearly didn't sit well. The striker said: 'I wasn't happy with the way they've been as a club, like before the game, eyeing up Spurs when they've not even beaten us. We're an honest set of lads and we want to go as far as we can in this competition. "If we get beaten in the next round, so be it, we'll give it a right go. But I think they thought we were just going to roll over when they got back in it. I think the referee was helping them all night as well. I don't think he gave me one foul all night tonight. But, yeah, it's one of those things. I've probably lost my head a little bit, but I've got a smile on my face..." ‌ Sharp was said to have shouted down the tunnel after the clash, which led Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson to simply say he was 'disappointed". The striker has recalled the incident on Ben Foster's Fozcast as he explained: "I went over to my mum, my dad, wife, kids, my friends, as I normally do. I blow my kids a kiss, getting coins, having a bit of banter. I do a little crying gesture to the Wrexham fans – which I could have done a lot worse. "Parky comes running over – 'What are you saying!' He is giving it loads because I'm having a bit of banter and his team has just got knocked out, I'm happy we've gone through and spoiled the underdog story. I've had a bit of beef with Parky before. No grudge. There was no need for him to get involved after the game." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Doncaster and Port Vale promoted to League One

Doncaster Rovers and Port Vale will both line up in League One next season after convincing victories over fellow promotion contenders put them up automatically. Rovers claimed a 2-1 win against local rivals Bradford City to confirm their ascent with a game to spare, while Port Vale also sealed a return to the third tier - and remain in the hunt for the title - thanks to an away triumph over AFC Wimbledon. Advertisement An early goal from Robert Street gave Doncaster the lead at halftime, and their hold on the match tightened when Bradford's Aden Baldwin was shown a red card for dissent. Veteran forward Billy Sharp added a stoppage-time goal to seal the win and render Michael Mellon's 94th-minute effort for Bradford little more than a consolation. Doncaster now head into their final fixture against Notts County holding a one-point lead at the summit. In the capital, Port Vale confirmed their immediate promotion back to League One with a 2-0 second-half surge that guaranteed a top-three finish with a game still remaining. Advertisement After a quiet opening 45 minutes in which Darren Moore's men failed to register a shot on target, they burst into life as Jayden Stockley and Jaheim Headley both found the net within minutes. Stockley had earlier seen a goal disallowed for offside, but made no mistake in the 64th minute, heading home Headley's free-kick for his 11th goal of the season. Headley turned scorer moments later, latching onto a well-weighted pass from skipper George Byers to calmly slot past goalkeeper Owen Goodman. Vale's result ensured promotion - and kept their hopes of lifting the title alive going into the final round.

'Senseless attack by fan hasn't put me off' - Sharp targets playing beyond 40

Billy Sharp has only once considered retirement during a phenomenal playing career spanning 21 years, 283 goals and 10 different clubs - and which shows no sign of ending any time years ago the striker was attacked by a Nottingham Forest fan at the end of Sheffield United's play-off defeat at the City Ground."I was in the wrong place at the wrong time," Sharp says about being headbutted and requiring stitches to his was later said in court that Sharp had been on the receiving end of a "senseless act of violence".But it was not that moment that almost led the prolific goalscorer to it was a year later - in 2023 at the age of 37 - that he seriously considered packing it all had just been released by Sheffield United - the club he grew up supporting as a boy - after scoring 129 goals in 377 appearances across three spells with his hometown club."I'd had three promotions with them," adds Sharp, who has scored in the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two."That was the only kit I wanted to wear. I just wanted to play for Sheffield United. When I was released I asked myself 'is it time to retire?'." Sharp flew to the United States to get over that major disappointment and after a short spell with LA Galaxy - which included a hat-trick against Minnesota United - he had fallen back in love with the game he has graced for so long."Going to LA Galaxy made me realise I still love scoring goals, I still love playing football. That's why I'm still playing now," he tells BBC Sport."The heartache of not playing for Sheffield United gave me an opportunity to experience another league and another team, who I really enjoyed playing for."Now in his fourth spell at Doncaster Rovers, Sharp wants to cause an FA Cup upset when the League Two club host Premier League Crystal Palace in the fourth round on Monday (19:45 GMT) - which you can watch on BBC iPlayer - five days after celebrating his 39th birthday."I've no plans to retire," adds the veteran of more than 600 league games. 'I was more hurt we lost the game' Sharp was 18 when he made his Sheffield United debut under Neil Warnock in 2004 in a team featuring Phil Jagielka, Paddy Kenny and Danny years later, his unquenchable hunger, commitment and loyalty remains - despite memories of that 2022 captain Sharp, who could not play against Forest - one of his former clubs -because of injury, was making sure his team-mates made it safely off the pitch after hundreds of jubilant home fans spilled on to the playing surface at full-time."I had a damaged lip [from being headbutted] but I was more hurt by the fact we'd lost a play-off semi-final," he says of the attack."Should players get headbutted on the side of the pitch? No. Should the security and safety of the players have been better that night? Yes. "But it didn't stop me from wanting to carry on playing. Playing football at places like the City Ground and Wembley are a big factor why I want to keep on playing. "It didn't cross my mind that maybe I should retire."A Forest season-ticket holder later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was jailed for 24 after the attack, Forest fan Zoe Potts started an online fundraiser which raised £16,000 for Sharp's nominated charity Martin House Hospice - who provide care for children with life-limiting illnesses. 'I love you, son' With Doncaster third in League Two, Sharp is on target for a sixth promotion of his career. As well as three with Sheffield United (2016-17, 2018-19 and 2022-23), he has also celebrated going up with Scunthorpe United (2006-07) and Southampton (2011-12).Despite success on the pitch, Sharp has endured personal tragedy off 2011, he showed incredible courage to play and score for Doncaster against Middlesbrough three days after the death of his newborn son."My goal tonight was the most important of my career dedicated to my brave boy Luey Jacob Sharp. I love you, son," he wrote on social media after the recently close friend and former Sheffield United team-mate George Baldock died at the age of 31. The England-born Greece international was found dead in the swimming pool of his house in Glyfada, southern Athens, in October 2024."George's passing affects me day to day," says Sharp, who attended Baldock's funeral and played alongside him at Wembley when Sheffield United lost 3-0 to Manchester City in an FA Cup semi-final in April 2023."He was not only a team-mate but also a very good friend. I went on many holidays with him and made family memories with my kids, my wife and his partner." 'I want to be a manager' Sharp turned 39 on the same day Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his 40th birthday. And just like Ronaldo, he wants to carry on playing."I'm still trying to convince myself I'm 29 - not 39," he laughs. His birthday presents included a new dart board."A lot of people are into it right now thanks to Luke Littler but I've always been into my darts. Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld were the ones when I was growing up."Sharp will be hoping to hit bullseye in Monday's tie against Crystal he grew up a Sheffield United fan, Sharp says current club Doncaster have a special place in his was with them when Luey passed away 14 years ago."They helped me through some incredibly tough times personally," he contract expires in the summer. Will he still be playing in the Football League next season?"The drive is still there, the hunger is still there. I'm going to try and keep playing and my aim is to get 300 career goals."If I can't do that this season, I want to make sure I reach that target next season."And what will life look like when he does eventually retire from playing?"I'd like to be a manager. I've got my Uefa A and I've done my Uefa B coaching badges."For now, Sharp will have to content himself coaching young sons Leo and Milo, who - like their dad - are football-mad.
