Gunmen kill 27 in central Nigeria: official

ABUJA, July 16 (Xinhua) -- At least 27 people were killed in an attack by suspected gunmen in Plateau State in central Nigeria, which has recently witnessed increased attacks, a senior official said Wednesday. Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau, told the media during an on-the-spot assessment of the havoc in the Bindi community of Riyom local government area that aside from the casualties, the gunmen also destroyed houses, crops on farmlands, and other valuable properties during the attack early Tuesday. The gunmen rode motorbikes into the community, firing indiscriminately at residents while also setting homes and farmlands ablaze. "I am calling on the security agencies to redouble their efforts. We need to reappraise our strategy and tactics," the governor said, calling for a concerted effort to halt the bloodshed and wanton destruction of property. The motive behind the latest attack remains unclear. Plateau State, located in Nigeria's central region between the Muslim-dominated north and the Christian-majority south, has witnessed repeated attacks in recent years. Armed attacks have been a primary security threat in Nigeria's northern and central regions, leading to deaths and kidnaps in recent months.

No one wants to buy £4m mansion due to stigma of its notorious former owner

The disgraced former kids TV presenter, who was jailed in 2014 after being found guilty of a dozen indecent assaults against four young girls, died at the Berkshire property in 2023 The mansion where paedophile Rolf Harris carried out some of his crimes has failed to sell three months after being put up for sale. The property, where Harris died from neck cancer aged 93 in May 2023, has been put on the market for £4million. But experts say his only child Bindi, who inherited it along with most of his £16m estate, is asking too much. ‌ Local estate agent Brian Warren previously valued the property on the banks of the River Thames after selling others on the same street. He told the Mirror: "We actually looked at it and others on the same row. I originally said it was worth £2million. ‌ "No one buying at that price would want to live in it because of the stigma and it's a mess, with all add-on extensions that Rolf Harris put on over the years. So they're looking at paying another £1.5million on top of that to rebuild it because it's on the river, which is more expensive." The house, in Bray, Berkshire, was quietly put up for sale earlier this year, two years after the disgraced entertainer's death. There have been some viewings, but no one is yet to agree a deal. ‌ Harris, who was jailed for five years and nine months in June 2014 after being found guilty of a dozen indecent assaults against four young girls, had lived there for more than six decades. His wife Alwen, who had been suffering from Alzheimer's, also died there in August last year. Harris' crimes, including sex assaults on one of Bindi's friends, who was aged between 13 and 19 at the time, took place between 1968 and 1986. He was said to have performed a sex act on her while his daughter slept in another room at the family home. The disgraced entertainer had been supported during his court case by his wife Alwen and daughter Bindi, who held hands with him each day while entering the court. ‌ Harris was famously seen leaving his home by boat on the River Thames while heading to his sentencing hearing in an attempt to avoid journalists, including TV camera operators and photographers outside the front of his home. The house was originally designed in line with his childhood house on the banks of the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia, where he learned to swim before becoming a national junior backstroke champion aged 15. It was renovated ahead of his release from prison in 2017 when workmen were seen replacing a huge patio at a cost of more than £10,000. The front drive, which is overlooked by a horsehead, was also dug up and the back garden was revamped. But it is believed much of the inside is dated and needs upgrading. Harris rose to fame in his early 20s when he began presenting a cartoon drawing section on It is a children's show Jigsaw. He went on to illustrate Harbin's Paper Magic program in 1956 and quickly became a regular on other BBC television shows. Brian, of Warren Property Matters, based in Eton, Windsor, added: "Given the cost of renovation, it's just not cost effective if you have to pay £4million for the property."

'Doesn't even sound like her': Queensland-based Bindi Irwin shocks with thick American accent in podcast interview as theory behind change emerges

Bindi Irwin has shocked fans by speaking with a thick American accent in a podcast interview after spending a significant amount of time in the US. The Australian wildlife warrior's sudden change of tone can be clearly heard as she recently spoke with Not Gonna Lie podcast host Kylie Kelce. In the pair's wide-ranging discussion, Bindi spoke about her four-year-old daughter Grace's love for the popular children's animated character Bluey. "How big is Bluey in your household?" Kelce asked the 26-year-old. Bindi affirmed the character was a staple in her home, but it was her thick American accent while answering the question that caught fans off guard. "Oh my goodness," Bindi said, mirroring Kelce's twang. "Bluey is life; Bluey is everything," The daughter of the late conservationist Steve Irwin and his American wife Terri tapered her new accent as the pair's discussion progressed. Eventually, the mother of one returned to speaking with her usual Australian pronunciation. Bindi has been previously observed using an American accent when speaking with Americans or in a US setting. Her husband Chandler Powell and mother Terri are from the US, which could explain how Bindi's speech has been influenced. Nevertheless, eagle-eyed fans are baffled over the sudden change and have taken to Reddit to attempt to explain how it happened. One person on the platform recalled the entire Irwin family had a "very strong" Australian accent while growing up in the 2000s, claiming it has now changed dramatically. "I've noticed that Bindi Irwin's accent and speech pattern has completely changed," the fan wrote. "And it doesn't even sound like her anyone. Meanwhile, both her mother and brother still have the accents they've always had." A commentator responded by speculating the swap could be due to "code-switching." The common practice refers to people alternating between two or more languages or language varieties in conversation. "Code-switching. Depending on who I'm talking to, I have no Southern accent, just a light one, heavier one, or full-good ole girl. Depending," the Reddit user wrote. "I do not even think about it; I just do it." Bindi's latest use of her American accent comes as she has been spending time in the States where she recently underwent emergency surgery in New York. The wildlife warrior took to Instagram to post a heartfelt video from her hospital bed in May, just an hour after the procedure. "Hey guys, Bindi here, I just wanted to thank you so much for your incredible well wishes, I just got out of surgery about an hour ago," she said, as hospital equipment beeped softly in the background. "I just had my appendix removed. I also had 14 new endometriosis lesions that had to be removed, and they kindly stitched up my hernia as well." Bindi was flown to New York for the surgery from Las Vegas, where she had intended to attend the annual Steve Irwin Gala but was unable to do so. The gala, held to raise funds for global conservation efforts, has been running since 2002 in memory of Steve Irwin. The loved conservationist died at the age of 44 in 2006 after being fatally injured by a stingray while filming on the Great Barrier Reef. Bindi has since shared updates to her more than 5 million Instagram followers, indicating she is on the road to recovery.
