I suggested naming of BBMKU after Binod Bihari Mahto: Hemant

1 2 Dhanbad: Unveiling the statue of Jharkhand statehood movement leader and founding member of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Binod Bihari Mahto at the Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University ( BBMKU ) here on Monday jointly with governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, chief minister Hemant Soren said the govt's decision to establish the university in 2014 was a landmark step to help students of Dhanbad to study higher education in their own district. Hemant recalled Mahto as a noted educationist of the state and said naming the university was a fitting tribute to the late JMM leader . "Earlier, students were forced to travel long distances for academic work. Now, that is over. I also suggested naming the university after Binod Bihar Mahto when it was founded in 2017," Hemant said. Speaking on the occasion, governor Gangwar, who is also the chancellor of state universities, expressed dissatisfaction over the standard of higher education in Jharkhand, saying the benchmark remains below expectations and making the students seek opportunities in other states. "The crisis of faculty members is also a major issue in the state's universities. JPSC has been instructed to begin the recruitment process for teachers," the governor added. Several dignitaries, including Giridih MP Chandraprakash Chaudhry, ministers Sudvya Kumar MLA Jaimangal Singh, Raj Sinha, Jairam Mahto, Arup Chatterjee, Mathura Prasad Mahto, Shatrughan Mahto, Umakant Rajak and Chandradeo Mahto, were present at the event. Welcoming the guests, the vice chancellor of the university, Ramkumar Singh, recalled Mahto's contribution to education and society. Students organised cultural performances and sang the university's 'Kulgeet' (anthem) as part of the programme. Meanwhile, Dhanbad MLA Raj Sinha slammed Hemant for taking credit of establishing BBMKU. Speaking after the statue unveiling ceremony, Sinha said the university was established during the tenure of former BJP CM Raghubar Das. "Hemant is spreading lies. The university was set up when Raghubar Das was in office. In fact, it was I who suggested naming the university after Binod Bihari Mahto," Sinha claimed and accused the CM of making politically motivated statements. "It seems the CM is delivering a speech at an election rally rather than addressing a formal event," he added.
