CPI Thrissur district meet concludes; K.G. Sivanandan new district secretary

A four-day Communist Party of India (CPI) district conference came to a close in Irinjalakuda on Sunday. K.G. Sivanandan has been elected as the new district secretary. The announcement was made by CPI State secretary Binoy Viswam while addressing the elected representatives at the conference. A 57-member district council and 50 representatives to the upcoming CPI State conference were also elected during the meet. The district conference has passed a resolution demanding the reinstatement of the Planning Commission, an institution once crucial to country's balanced development planning, and urged the Centre to uphold its constitutional responsibilities in maintaining healthy Union-State relations. Centre-State relations The resolution alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led administration is deliberately weakening the Centre-State relations and centralising power as part of a larger Sangh Parivar agenda. The discontinuation of the Planning Commission, a body that once played a key advisory role in strategising national development and welfare programmes, was described as a politically motivated move, especially targeted at States where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has little political footing. By replacing the Commission with NITI Aayog and simultaneously denying financial aid to States like Kerala, the Centre is allegedly crippling progressive development models, the party stated. Despite being consistently ranked at the top in indicators like health, education, and social welfare, even in the NITI Aayog's own reports, Kerala is being financially squeezed by the Centre, the resolution claimed. The CPI pointed out that the State has witnessed a shortfall of ₹2,942.29 crore in Central revenue share between 2023 and January 2025 . The 15th Finance Commission's recommendations are being ignored and the ₹12,000 crore annual GST compensation Kerala was entitled to has been discontinued, the conference said. Cultural complex The meet demanded a cultural heritage complex in Thrissur. The resolution pointed out that Thrissur has, for more than half a century, been home to the State's most prestigious official cultural institutions, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, and Lalithakala Akademi, Kerala Kalamandalam and Unnayi Warrier Smaraka Kalanilayam. The district's contribution extends beyond the arts. It is etched into the social and political fabric of modern Kerala through landmark struggles like the Guruvayur Satyagraha, the Kuttan Kulam protest for social justice, the Veloor Manimalarkavu women's liberation movement, the Pariyaram farmers' agitation, and labour movements in Anthikad and Amballur. Thrissur was also the land of action of visionary leaders like E.M.S. Namboodiripad and C. Achutha Menon. In light of this profound cultural, literary, artistic, political, and social heritage, the CPI district conference has urged the Kerala government to establish a comprehensive cultural heritage complex here.

Governor must uphold constitutional values: CPI

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Asserting that CPI doesn't want a tussle with Raj Bhavan, party state secretary Binoy Viswam said that the governor should uphold constitutional values and national interests as Raj Bhavan is a constitutional establishment. 'The governor holds a constitutional position. The primary duty of the person residing there is to uphold constitutional values and national interests,' said Binoy Viswam. He alleged that the governor failed in this responsibility. 'Unfortunately, the governor has forgotten that,' he said. Referring to Agriculture Minister P Prasad boycotting an event at Raj Bhavan, Binoy said a Communist minister in a Left government can take only such a position. He said the party will not allow any attempt to smuggle in a version of Bharat Mata that resembles the one seen only in RSS shakhas,' he said. While acknowledging that the governor may personally hold certain ideological views, Binoy Viswam said that such positions should not influence the constitutional office he holds. 'While holding the position of governor, it is not the RSS ideology that should be projected. If the strong protest raised by the Communist party has opened his eyes, that is a good thing,' he said. Binoy Viswam added that the CPI and the CPM stand united on the matter.

Nilambur bypoll: Binoy Viswam accuses Congress of joining hands with communal parties

Accusing the Congress party of joining hands with parties associated with 'both majority communalism and minority communalism', Communist Party of India (CPI) Kerala State secretary Binoy Viswam has said the results of the upcoming Nilambur byelection will reflect the people's backlash against such tendencies. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday (June 17, 2025), Mr. Viswam said the political winds in Nilambur are favourable to the Left Democratic Front and its candidate M. Swaraj. 'The Congress' politics in Kerala revolves around blind hatred for the Left. This leads them to ally with anyone who stands for such anti-Left politics. Kerala has not forgotten the Vadakara-Beypore model that the Congress pioneered years ago, when a party which claims Mahatma Gandhi as its own joined hands with the party of Nathuram Godse, who assassinated Gandhi. The same party is now nurturing minority communalism in Nilambur. History has rejected this brand of politics. The results of this election will be a jolt to the Congress' political base,' said Mr. Viswam. Peace rallies He also said the CPI will be organising peace rallies across Kerala in protest against 'the war-mongering Zionist and imperialist forces who have unleashed death and destruction in West Asia.' The first rally will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday evening. 'The Communist party has consistently taken a stand against war. The Zionist-imperialist forces have become a threat to world peace. It is the time for the world to unite against the destruction being unleashed in Palestine and Iran,' he said.

"Aviation Minister must take moral responsibility": CPI's Binoy Viswam on Ahmedabad plane crash

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India] June 13 (ANI): CPI State Secretary Binoy Viswam criticised Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu over the Air India plane crash in Ahemdabad, saying that he should take moral responsibility for this tragic incident. 'What's the guarantee of the lives of passengers who pay exorbitant prices to travel by air across destinations?... Aircraft crashes are becoming a recurring phenomenon here, there, and everywhere... Every time such an incident occurs, we hear the same line from the Minister: 'An inquiry will be ordered.' But is that enough?... I believe it is the Civil Aviation Minister who should take moral responsibility... At this point, the least he can do is resign immediately. That will send a strong message... India no longer has a national carrier,' he told ANI. 'Private companies now operate all aircraft... These private operators are only interested in maximising profit, not the safety of passengers... These are not just business decisions--they are criminal acts in pursuit of profit. And these profits are shared between political bosses and private operators... The government knows--but it lacks the courage to enforce full safety regulations,' he added. On Thursday, the Al-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 plane bound for London's Gatwick crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport. The airline said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash. According to Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It made a Mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, the aircraft did not respond to the calls. Immediately after departing Runway 23, the aircraft crashed outside the airport perimeter, and heavy black smoke began emanating from the accident site. Vishwashkumar Ramesh miraculously survived the Air India plane crash a day ago, in which 241 other passengers died. Kumar, a British national of Indian origin, was seated in row 11, at the left window seat in the flight's economy class section, right behind an emergency exit. There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national on board the crashed plane, airline authorities said. (ANI)

BrahMos: CPI asks Rajnath Singh not to delink BATL from BAPL

Thiruvananthapuram, June 9 (UNI) CPI Kerala Secretary Binoy Viswam has urged Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to reconsider the decision to delink the BrahMos Aerospace Trivandrum Limited (BATL) from the BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL), a Joint Venture (JV) of India and Russia. Former Rajya Sabha member Binoy Viswam, who is also President of BrahMos Employees Union (AlTUC), said the BAPL Board has taken a decision to delink BATL from the management control of BAPL as a subsidiary unit. The Communist Party of India (CPI) leader sought the Centre to take appropriate action to retain BATL with BAPL or make BATL an entity under the DRDO. Any other decision in this regard may badly affect the growth of BATL as a prestigious organisation in Kerala, he claimed. He said the Kerala High-Tech Industries (KELTEC), a public sector undertaking of the Kerala state, was handed over to DRDO by the Kerala government in March 2007, envisioning its development. An asset worth 300 crore, including 17.8 acres of land, a modern plant, and machinery, was transferred to the central government for just one rupee (free of cost), he said. Since DRDO is a research and development organisation, it faced difficulties in direct takeover, prompting the then defence minister to take necessary actions for the transfer of KELTEC to BAPL, which operates under DRDO; thus, KELTEC was handed over to the Indo-Russian joint venture BAPL by the state government in November 2007, he explained. On January 1, 2008, the BrahMos Thiruvananthapuram company was restructured into a subsidiary called BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Limited (BATL) by the order of BAPL Headquarters, Delhi. Currently the BATL executes BrahMos, DRDO, ISRO, and BARC works in Thiruvananthapuram. BATL is now executing important and very complicated components of BrahMos missiles like BrahMos metallic air components, the gas generator control panel system (GG-CPS), the B1-BIl booster, F3 CKD-SKD for land and air versions, containers for launching, corset logistics for land and air packed containers, etc. The organisation has been profitable for the last 11 years and made a profit of Rs 24 crore in the financial year 2024-25. It is understood from employees of BATL that on May 20, 2025, the BAPL Board and AGM have taken a decision to delink BATL from the management control of BAPL as a subsidiary unit. "Hence, I request you to investigate this matter and also take appropriate action to retain BATL with BAPL or make BATL an entity under DRDO," the CPI leader said in a letter to Rajnath Singh.
