She was missing, found, bipolar, schizophrenic, and ended up stabbed and shot in Indianapolis

If you are struggling or know someone who is, call 211 to be connected with a trained crisis specialist with Mental Health America of Indiana, who provides free, confidential assistance 24/7 through its Be Well Crisis Helpline. In a cramped Evansville home, Shawnnetta Small's early years unfolded in a room alongside her siblings, locked away from most of the world. Shawnnetta Small always had to stay in one room with her brother and sister, and was afraid of ever coming out, lest she be beaten brutally by their father, according to her family. In 1986, when Small was 5, her aunt visited and witnessed the situation her sister and the children were enduring. "Even when he went to work, those kids never wanted to come out of the room," Judy Perkins told IndyStar. Perkins helped her sister escape the abuse, and the family moved to a new home. But the effects of the abuse were already taking hold of her young niece. Small was diagnosed in her 20s with bipolar disorder and schizotypal personality disorder. Childhood trauma, abuse, and neglect are significant risk factors for developing a personality disorder, while being bipolar isn't a direct effect of child abuse, but can influence the disorder's severity over time, experts say. Small's life has been chronicled through public missing persons reports, arrests, and psychiatric hospital visits all over the country. It would end with her being stabbed and shot inside an Indianapolis house on July 12, 2025. Her family believes Small was likely unmedicated and had an episode before being killed. She was 44. Eventually, Perkins would move to Ohio, leaving her sister and her kids in Indiana, but a few years after that, in the early 90s, she learned the kids were placed in foster care. Their mother was accused of being neglectful, and the family became strained in communication. Perkins hasn't seen her sister in over 30 years, which would become a trend for the family. Small would often go missing with strangers trying to get her help and bring her to some kind of home. Four years ago, Small reached out to Perkins asking if she could live with her in Ohio. The next few months would be a roller coaster with Perkins noticing Small "acted real weird." She would "talk in riddles." She didn't clean up after herself and often slept in a bed with trash and food. "She'd just throw a coat over it and go to sleep," Perkins said. Knowing she needed help, Perkins took her to see a doctor who gave her an official diagnosis. But Small would skip taking medications. Small would often leave Perkins' home for weeks on end. One day, she left, and Perkins didn't think anything of it until she got a strange package in the mail, prompting her to put out a missing persons report. It was Small's ID, her social security card, and other personal items. "After I put out the report, this woman called me from Orlando, Florida, saying Shawnnetta was mentally challenged," Perkins said. "The lady was feeding her and begging her to come stay with her, but Shawnnetta said no." In 2018, Perkins said a search and rescue team spotted Small in Missouri, where she had been sleeping in a restroom. Concerned calls to local police came in about her walking along the highway. Missouri State Highway Patrol and others offered her food, water, money and rides that she declined. She was eventually taken to a St. Louis hospital before being discharged. "She called me speaking in riddles again, so I knew she wasn't on medication," Perkins said. Eventually, Small got a bus ticket to Cleveland and stayed with Perkins, but would leave again after a few months. Small was banking on coming into money from a lawsuit she'd filed in 2022 while in Missouri that tapped 28 defendants, including Megabus, Walmart, and T-Mobile Metro PCS, Perkins said. "She told me she was moving to Indianapolis, and that was the last I saw her," Perkins said. But that lawsuit was the ramblings of someone struggling with borderline schizophrenia, and a judge dismissed the case. At 8:04 p.m., on July 11, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were called about a disturbance with a weapon between roommates at a home in the 1500 block of North Downey Avenue on the city's east side. The caller was Small and said her roommate had assaulted her and was possibly armed. She told police he and his girlfriend were "talking sh*t" about paying rent. She lived in a bedroom house with multiple rooms rented out. Officers began searching the house room by room. They went to a downstairs basement room, forced open a door, and found Small with at least one stab wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Items collected nearby were a spent shell casing, pepper spray and a box cutter. She had trauma to her neck and a gunshot wound to the chest. One neighbor told police the roommate knocked on her door and told them that Small smeared feces and spit on him. According to court documents, he explained that Small was defecating in a bathroom with the door open. He asked her to close the door, and tried to close the door for her when Small smeared feces on him and called him derogatory names, court records state. Later, the neighbor, Small, and the roommate were upstairs when he asked Small if they were good. "No, we ain't good. Do you want to fight?" Small told him, according to the neighbor. That's when Small threatened the man with a gun, according to court documents. The roommate was later arrested on preliminary charges of murder. IndyStar is not naming the roommate because formal charges are pending. Perkins said the local sheriff's office informed her about Small's killing. That's when Perkins learned she was listed as a next of kin, although she hadn't seen Small in years. "They were asking me all types of questions that I could not answer," Perkins said. "She had her mental issues, but she did not deserve this."

Speaking about his son on the BBC show, Jeff said: "I couldn't hazard a guess on how Fred's mind works but I know he's going to do something amazing in his lifetime. Glasgow woman caught smuggling cocaine into Barlinnie
Sarah Dempster went to the East End jail on the afternoon of December 29, 2022 to visit William Dempster. During the visit, a prison officer's attention was drawn to the table where they were sitting because the pair were moving suspiciously and looking around the room. Employees monitoring CCTV saw the 37-year-old woman take an item from her clothes and pass it to the inmate. A worker went to the table and the prisoner was taken for a body search. 0.7g of cocaine was found on him, worth £20-50, along with white tablets later identified as Buprenorphine. The visitor was arrested. READ NEXT: Wounded man threw hot chocolate at attacker after being slashed with knife Ms Dempster appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court earlier this week after she pleaded guilty to taking the substances into the prison. Her lawyer explained: "These are quite clearly very serious offences, she accepts that. "She was married to Mr Dempster and he was imprisoned at Barlinnie. "She has Bipolar Disorder and she said her mental health was particularly poor at that time. "Threats were made to her and her husband. She does not remember collecting the packets but she knows it was not a good decision." Sheriff Jonathan Guy replied: "It's a very serious offence. "Taking drugs into prison puts them into the system. The court has to take it seriously. The sentence needs to signal society's disapproval." Ms Dempster was sentenced to one year of supervision and tagged for eight months, forcing her to stay at home between 9am and 6am each day.

EXCLUSIVE The Valley's Kristen Doute SHADES Jax Taylor and his treatment of ex Brittany Cartwright
The Valley star Kristen Doute has weighed in on her co-star Jax Taylor seeking help for his cocaine addiction, and whether she believes he's a changed man. The 45-year-old confessed last month that he had substance issues, primarily with cocaine, ever since he was in his 20s. In September 2024, Jax checked into an in-patient facility to address his substance abuse and anger issues following his split from ex Brittany Cartwright, 36. After spending 30 days in an in-patient facility, he informed his fans that he was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and PTSD. 'It's been a lot to process and an emotional time for me, however I've come home to my son with a newfound sense of peace. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't scared for the future but my focus is just trying to be a better version of myself than I was yesterday,' he wrote on Instagram at the time. 'Mental health is a lifelong battle of not letting it control you but rather you learning to control it." In an exclusive interview with Kristen, who was joined by her co-star Nia Sanchez, said that she doesn't believe he got the treatment that he needed. Jax Taylor checked himself into an in-patient facility in September 2024 to address his substance abuse and anger issues following his split from Brittany 'I don't think that it did [help] and I don't think that had anything to do with the facility. 'I think it was what he was willing to give and receive from that journey that he took there, which you'll see play out,' she revealed. 'But no, I don't think he's taken anything seriously enough yet. I'm still hoping.' Bravo fans are now watching Jax's mental health journey play out in new episodes of The Valley. Season two premiered on April 15. The cast is watching scenes unfold for the first time, especially those that they were not part of during filming. Kristen admitted, 'To be honest, I don't think Jax could be worse. And I'm glad that it is being shown exactly the way that it is. It's not being sugar-coated. Because he was really awful, and that's just factual, unfortunately... Like, one-upping himself.' The Vanderpump Rules alum's co-star couldn't agree more. Nia, 35, told 'Yeah, I mean some of the things that he was saying, I was like, "Really? Really?"' Brittany, who shares three-year-old son Cruz with Jax, filed for divorce in Los Angeles in August 2024, citing irreconcilable differences. Meanwhile, their co-stars, Michelle, 36, and Jesse Lally, 44, are also in the midst of divorce after Michelle filed in March 2024 after five years of marriage. Nia, who is married to Daniel Booko, said the way both couples are handling the divorce process is 'very different'. 'There's a lot of just dysfunction in both relationships, and I feel like for both relationships, it's so much better for them to be separate, and I'm normally not the person that says that. 'Like, even when Brittany and Jax first separated I'm like, "If he changes, then maybe there's hope." Because I could see in her heart that she wanted hope and hope for that in the beginning.' Kristen agreed that both couples are 'so much happier separated' and said she is hoping that they can eventually 'get to a place where it's not so hard to be in the same room.' However, when it comes to finalizing their divorces - both of which are still ongoing - the TV personality believes Jax and Brittany's divorce will be finalized first. 'I think Jesse's been more difficult. Jax doesn't have a leg to stand on, in my opinion, even though he's also very difficult,' she insisted. Kristen gushed, 'I'm so grateful because I don't know what I would do without Nia.' The co-stars stopped by New York City office on April 22 She went on say, 'They're both very stubborn bullheaded men who want their way, which I've heard happens a lot in divorce, I guess. 'But they all know that they're happier without each other. So I hope they come to a resolution, so they can move on.' Kristen revealed to that she's fully supportive of Brittany moving on and dating whomever she wants, including Jax's friend Julian Sensley. In the premiere episode of The Valley, Jax learned that his ex had been sending 'sexy' text messages to his now-former friend. Despite it being a 'fling', Kristen said, 'It wasn't about Brittany finding someone to replace Jax, finding someone to replace as Cruz's dad or her new husband. 'It was just about finding someone that [thinks] you're beautiful and that you're funny and you're kind and you're smart, and all the things that your husband has not done for the last 10 years.' When asked if she's playing matchmaker for her friend, Kristen said, 'She's doing wonderfully by herself, but I am absolutely a wing woman.' Nia added, 'Yeah support and encourage but she's good on her own. She's incredible.' Meanwhile, Jax is rumored to be dating esthetician Jessica Perkson. She told 'He said [a photo of the rumored couple] was from a long time ago - as there are happy Easter balloons all over Ralph's grocery store. So I'm like, "How long ago? Last Easter?" 'He says that he is not, but he also says a lot of things. They could be dating they might not be.' Not bothered by Kristen's love life, she is focusing on her own with her fiancé Luke Broderick. The couple got engaged in September 2024 and are now expecting their first child together - a baby girl - in June. Nia, for her part, is expecting her fourth child - following the birth of Asher, 3, and one-year-old twins Isabelle and Zariah - with Daniel and is due around the same time as Kristen ('a week apart') and is also expecting a baby girl. Kristen gushed, 'I'm so grateful because I don't know what I would do without Nia. I spent the first 12 weeks - more than actually, like the first like 16 weeks - complaining to her about my pregnancy and how new it was and how difficult it was like emotionally and mentally, which isn't something I think a lot of people talk about... And then she finally told me she was pregnant.' With less than two months away from her due date, Nia said that she is glad she can 'enjoy' her pregnancy, which is a 'breath of fresh air,' after giving birth to her twins, which she said had a lot of 'high-risk moments.' New episodes of The Valley air every Tuesday at 9pm ET on Bravo.
