Netflix drops fresh look at new mystery thriller with Keira Knightley — and this movie turns a luxury cruise into a nightmare
Netflix is on a roll lately when it comes to thrillers, and honestly, it's no surprise. Viewers eat this genre up like it's the most irresistible treat on streaming. As someone who dives into thrillers regularly, I'm usually all in when Netflix drops something new. That's exactly the case with 'The Woman in Cabin 10,' an upcoming murder mystery that follows Keira Knightley's character as she witnesses someone being thrown off a luxury yacht, only for no one to believe her. Sure, it's not the most original premise, but since it's based on Ruth Ware's bestselling novel, I've got high hopes it'll at least be a gripping watch. And with Knightley at the center (coming off her strong performance in the Netflix thriller series 'Black Doves'), this one's definitely on my radar. We got a first-look image back in January, but now there's a fresh batch of photos to check out and a release date set for October 10. The official synopsis for this thriller reads: 'While on a luxury yacht for a travel assignment, a journalist witnesses a passenger tossed overboard late one night, only to be told that she must have dreamed it, as all passengers are accounted for. Despite not being believed by anyone onboard, she continues to look for answers, putting her own life in danger.' Netflix's newly released images show more of Knightley's character, Lo, looking increasingly worried. We also get a better look at other key characters, including David Ajala as Adam, Guy Pearce as Bullmer, Hannah Waddingham as Heidi and David Morrissey as Thomas. I was already intrigued thanks to the stacked cast and the mystery at its core, but these new images have only ramped up my excitement. 'The Woman in Cabin 10' is based on some pretty strong source material. After all, Ruth Ware's novel was a No. 2 New York Times bestseller and helped catapult her books onto multiple bestseller lists worldwide. It has sold well as part of Ware's overall catalog, which exceeds ten million copies globally. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Although the book was published a decade ago, Ware feels its themes still hit home today. 'The fear of not being believed is perennial, unfortunately,' she tells Netflix Tudum. 'Cabin 10, at its heart, is about a woman who experiences something wrong, reports it truthfully, and isn't taken seriously because of who she is. Too many people know what that feels like and I think we want vindication for ourselves as much as Lo.' Simon Stone directed the movie and also co-wrote the script alongside Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse. Stone's previous movies like 'The Daughter' and 'The Dig' show his skill at crafting emotionally charged, character-driven stories with a strong sense of atmosphere and tension. His past work shows he focuses a lot on character and atmosphere, so it's likely 'The Woman in Cabin 10' will pay close attention to the characters' emotions and relationships, not just the suspenseful plot. Other cast members include Gitte Witt, Art Malik, Daniel Ings, Christopher Rygh, Paul Kaye, Kaya Scodelario, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, John Macmillan, Pippa Bennett-Warner, and Ayọ̀ Owóyẹmi-Peters. Ware also talked more about her excitement for the adaptation: 'I've said in acknowledgements before that it takes a village to make a book, but what I learned going on set for Cabin 10 is that it takes a whole town to make a film — it's truly amazing seeing so many people working so hard on something you created. 'It's also a big leap of faith, of course — like handing your baby over to strangers. But I feel Lo [played by Knightley] and company are in good hands.' Hopefully, in the coming week,s Netflix releases a trailer for 'The Woman in Cabin 10,' because I'm keen to see more. At least we know it arrives on October 10, and until then, I'll be streaming other mystery thrillers on Netflix to keep my excitement levels at bay. This seems like a deadly cruise you don't want to miss in fall. Stream 'The Woman in Cabin 10' on Netflix starting October 10. Keeley Hawes is a perimenopausal James Bond in The Assassin
The Assassin (Netflix) is Mamma Mia! with a sniper rifle, and it's a treat. Keeley Hawes is in the Meryl Streep role, wearing dungarees on a picturesque Greek island. Her son comes to visit, wanting to know the truth about his father. But they don't get very far into that conversation, because she's a retired hit-woman and things are about to get very bloody. How bloody? Well, the credits include a 'blood specialist'. But there's nothing too grim here. It's a tongue-in-cheek action caper. The tone is reminiscent of Black Doves, the Netflix hit starring Keira Knightley as a gun-toting spy, although a key aspect of Black Doves was the unlikeliness of Knightley as an assassin; by contrast, middle-aged women everywhere will quickly buy into the idea of Hawes capably dispatching victims in between taking her HRT tablets and getting exasperated with her lily-livered son. 'Is that why you only eat mushrooms now? Are you in Extinction Rebellion?' she snorts, when Edward (former child star Freddie Highmore) expresses concern for the environment. Her character, Julie, is referred to in the script as a 'perimenopausal James Bond'. At one point, she murders somebody with a cheese fork. While Julie is forced to flee the island and go on the run with Edward and a handsome village shopkeeper (Gerald Kyd), there are various subplots going on. Billionaire's children Kayla and Ezra (Shalom Brune-Franklin and Devon Terrell) are holidaying on the family super-yacht off the Greek coast and get drawn into the action. In a Libyan prison, a terrified IT specialist (David Dencik) is wondering how he's going to survive in a cell full of homicidal heavies. The series is written by brothers Harry and Jack Williams, who can do serious (Baptiste, The Missing) and silly (The Widow, in which Kate Beckinsale battled through the Congolese jungle for several weeks while her vest remained Persil-white). They also made The Tourist, and The Assassin has the same deadpan humour and sense of the absurd. Highmore is great as the nervy Edward, coming to terms with the bombshell news that when his mum used to tell him she was a 'headhunter', she didn't mean in recruitment. Terrell is also very funny as the dumb billionaire offspring. Summer is usually a dead time for TV, so The Assassin is very welcome. Admittedly, the pace slackens after the first two episodes and it becomes a little less satisfying as the novelty wears off. There are also a couple of logical inconsistencies: why would a professional hitman waste dozens of bullets cutting down bystanders instead of concentrating on their target? Don't think too hard about it. Just enjoy the ride. And beware an angry woman with a cheese fork.

Black Doves Season 2: Release date speculation, cast and plot details – Everything we know so far
By Aman Shukla Published on July 19, 2025, 19:00 IST Last updated July 19, 2025, 11:39 IST If you devoured Black Doves Season 1 on Netflix, you're probably as pumped as I am for more of Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw kicking butt in this slick spy thriller. That mix of heart-pounding action, cheeky humor, and Christmas vibes had me hooked. Good news: Season 2 is officially on the way! Let's dive into everything we know about the release date, cast, plot, and more, based on the latest buzz. Black Doves Season 2 Release Date Speculation No exact date yet, but we can make an educated guess. Filming for Season 2 kicks off in July 2025, per What's on Netflix . Season 1 was shot from October 2023 to early 2024 and landed in December 2024, so a similar timeline points to a release around spring or summer 2026—think April to August. Joe Barton nixed the idea of a Christmas 2025 drop, saying it's 'not happening' due to scheduling, but waiting until Christmas 2026 feels like forever. Our bet? We'll see it mid-2026, and we are already counting down! Black Doves Season 2 Cast: Who's Returning? The core cast is expected to return, as most main characters survived Season 1. Here's who we anticipate seeing again: Keira Knightley as Helen Webb, the undercover spy juggling her double life as a politician's wife and mother. Ben Whishaw as Sam Young, the suave assassin and Helen's loyal friend. Sarah Lancashire as Reed, the enigmatic spymaster running the Black Doves. Andrew Buchan as Wallace Webb, Helen's husband and a rising political figure. Omari Douglas as Michael, Sam's estranged ex-boyfriend. Ella Lily Hyland as Williams, one of the younger assassins. Gabrielle Creevy as Eleanor, another Black Doves operative. Luther Ford as Hector Newman, a former target of Sam's who now employs him. Kathryn Hunter as Lenny Lines, a key figure in the organization. Some characters, like Andrew Koji's Jason Davies, likely won't return due to his death in Season 1, though flashbacks could bring him back. Tracey Ullman's role also seems to be a one-off after the Season 1 finale's shocking events. Barton teased a new villain for Season 2, describing them as a 'proper on-screen antagonist' to challenge Helen and Sam, so expect a fresh face to stir things up. Keira Knightley jokingly mentioned wanting to 'kill Dani' (a minor character), which could hint at a new target or just be playful banter. Black Doves Season 2 Plot: What to Expect Spoiler Warning for Season 1: If you haven't finished the first season, proceed with caution! Season 1 ended with major developments that set the stage for Season 2. Helen uncovered the truth behind her lover Jason's murder, which was tied to the Clark crime family and an MI5 agent's obsession with her. Sam took decisive action to protect Helen, killing Trent Clark to spare her the emotional toll, but this choice pulled him back into the assassin life, dashing his hopes of settling down with Michael. Key plot points to expect in Season 2 include: Helen's New Role: With her husband Wallace poised to become the UK's next Prime Minister, Helen's position as a Black Dove will give her access to even more sensitive government secrets. This raises the stakes, as she'll face increased scrutiny and danger. Sam's Conflict: Sam's decision to work for Hector Newman, a former target he spared years ago, creates tension. Will he stay loyal to Helen or be swayed by Hector's influence? His past continues to haunt him, especially after sacrificing his chance at a peaceful life with Michael. The Black Doves Organization: The revelation that Marie, the Webb family's nanny, is a Black Dove spy planted by Reed adds intrigue. Helen's discovery of this betrayal could strain her relationship with Reed and the organization. Backstories and New Villains: Barton plans to dive deeper into Helen and Sam's pasts, including Helen's childhood as Daisy Bradshaw and her family dynamics. He also wants to explore Reed's backstory and introduce a 'Moriarty'-style villain to challenge the duo. Supporting Characters: Expect more focus on younger characters like Eleanor, Williams, and Kai-Ming (the late Ambassador Chen's daughter), as their dynamics evolve. The fallout from the Clark family's demise could also spark revenge-driven conflicts. Ahmedabad Plane Crash Aman Shukla is a post-graduate in mass communication . World-renowned jazz artist to perform at 240-year-old Scottish hotel
Jazz star Dom Pipkin will launch Cronies Piano Lounge at Stirling's historic Golden Lion Hotel on July 9 A world-renowned jazz and blues pianist is set to bring his signature New Orleans sound to one of Scotland's most historic hotels next week. Dom Pipkin, hailed as 'one of the world's greatest exponents of New Orleans piano,' will perform at the Golden Lion Hotel in Stirling on Wednesday, July 9. The intimate gig will mark the launch of Cronies Piano Lounge, a new live music and cocktail space inside the centuries-old venue. The 66-bedroom Golden Lion has stood in the heart of Stirling for nearly 240 years and is famously linked to Rabbie Burns, who stayed there during a visit in 1787. According to legend, the poet was inspired by the dilapidated state of Stirling Castle to write his controversial 'Stirling Lines' and etched them into a pane of glass in his second-floor bedroom, only to later return and smash the window with the butt of his riding crop. Hotelier Gary Atinson said he was delighted to be welcoming Pipkin to such a storied venue. 'We're thrilled to have a true British jazz legend tinkling the ivories as we create Cronies Piano Lounge – a new home for superb music and classic cocktails,' he told Herald Scotland. 'My partner Ros and I have had the pleasure of seeing Dom perform initially in Ronnie Scotts in London, with Morcheeba in Cologne and, of course, in our Aberdeen hotel a few times. Once he dons that iconic hat and starts to play his unique mix of Big Easy sounds and songwriting with blues, it simply takes your breath away.' Pipkin's impressive career has seen him share stages with legends like Ray Davies and David Byrne, tour as a member of Morcheeba, and lead his own acclaimed band, The Ikos. He's a regular performer in New Orleans and is considered one of the UK's most respected interpreters of the city's musical traditions. Alongside his musical career, Pipkin has also made appearances on screen, including roles in Netflix's Black Doves and A Thousand Blows , the gritty historical drama from the creators of Peaky Blinders . His performance in Stirling won't be a one-off either. The hotel plans to build on the momentum by hosting regular lounge sessions, with top pianists lined up for Friday evenings, Saturday afternoons and nights, and relaxed Sunday jazz lunches. Pipkin himself is set to return for more performances later in the year. The Golden Lion stands on the site of The Gibb's Inn Tavern and Lodgings, rebuilt in the 1780s by Stirling businessman James Wingate and designed by the renowned Scottish architect Gideon Gray. It sits proudly on King Street, formerly known as Quality Street, renamed in 1820 to honour King George IV. Outside the hotel lies the historic 'New' Port Gate, a marker of Stirling's medieval past. It was here, legend says, that around the year 900 a wolf's growl alerted guards to a Danish Viking raid, helping to save the town. The wolf still features on Stirling's coat of arms as a symbol of its survival. Overlooking all of this stands the Golden Lion statue, a fixture of the cityscape for nearly two centuries. 'It has presided over many changes in our city, the ups and downs, the comings and goings,' the hotel says on its website. 'However, one thing remains constant: we continue to strive to provide a valuable service to visitors and travellers to and from Stirling alike.'
