‘Blade' update: Kevin Feige explains delays, says Mahershala Ali's role needs to be 'insanely great'

Marvel's 'Blade' movie has faced many delays since it was first announced in 2019, but Mahershala Ali is still set to play the lead role. Marvel Studios head recently explained why the film hasn't moved forward, the team wants to make sure it's truly special and not rushed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Kevin Feige talks about 'Blade' delays Marvel boss Kevin Feige has finally shared what's going on with the long-delayed 'Blade' movie. Despite multiple setbacks, he confirmed that two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is still committed to playing the lead role, the vampire hunter made famous by Wesley Snipes in the late '90s and early 2000s. Reason behind the delay Feige said the delays happened because Marvel didn't want to rush into production just to release another movie. 'We didn't want to just throw a leather jacket on Mahershala and have him start killing vampires. It needed to feel special,' Feige explained. 'At that point, we started taking a step back and saying, 'We'll only move forward with something if it feels truly great.' And at that time, it didn't.' He also mentioned a funny side note that costumes made for an earlier version of 'Blade' were given to filmmaker Ryan Coogler for his own vampire-themed project called 'Sinners'. 'Ryan asked if he could use the costumes and we said, 'Sure, go ahead,'' Feige joked. 'He's a good friend.' But the real issue, Feige admitted, was Marvel's attempt to produce more content when launched its streaming platform. This led to Marvel stretching itself too thin. 'We were told to make more stuff. And we tried. But that meant we sometimes picked quantity over quality, and we always said we'd never let that happen.' Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'Blade' was first announced in 2019 and was supposed to release in November 2023. However, it ran into multiple problems. Its first director, Bassam Tariq, left the project in 2022, just two months before filming was to start. A new director, Yann Demange, later joined but also exited in June 2024. Now, there's no director attached to the film, but Ali has made it clear, he's still ready. At a recent red-carpet event, he told Variety, 'Call Marvel. Let them know I'm ready.' Over the years, several writers have worked on 'Blade'. Feige said there were at least three or four versions of the story including two that were set in the past. But now, they've decided the movie will take place in the modern day, which is also why they gave away the old costumes. As for 'Sinners', many fans hoped Coogler would direct Blade, but Feige shut down those rumours. Coogler is busy working on Black Panther 3, which is currently in development, though no release date has been shared yet. Looking back, Feige admitted he has mixed feelings about announcing 'Blade' back in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con. 'In hindsight, maybe we shouldn't have announced it so early. But that's how we used to do things, announce it and then make it happen.' He added that the last few years have brought many unexpected challenges: the pandemic, Hollywood strikes, the loss of key actors, changing fan reactions, and problems like losing their main Kang actor, Jonathan Majors. 'We've had a lot of curveballs,' Feige said. Still, he made it clear that Marvel wants to get 'Blade' right and they won't move forward until they do.

A-List Actor Confirmed To Be Joining MCU In Upcoming Marvel Sequel

Many stars have been eager to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe if they haven't already been involved with the franchise. After all, the MCU is one of the biggest blockbuster franchises to date. However, there are quite a few A-list stars that have yet to be involved, though it looks like one beloved actor will be joining the MCU with an upcoming sequel. With so many roles to choose from based on the iconic comics that have inspired all of the MCU's films and shows, there seems to be an endless list of parts to choose from. As far as this actor becoming involved goes, it's still unknown who they might be playing, but having them tied to one of the franchise's most anticipated sequels is certainly exciting. It just so happens that this sequel is none other than Black Panther 3 , and according to director Ryan Coogler on the 7pm in Brooklyn podcast via E! Online, he confirmed 'there's no fiction out there about that' regarding the rumor that the aforementioned A-list star was set to have a role in the Black Panther follow-up. While Coogler couldn't reveal many details beyond that, he basically confirmed that actor Denzel Washington is set to have a role in Black Panther 3 . Without further discussing what part Washington could play in the film, Coogler did emphasize just how much he loves working with him: 'Denzel is family at this point,' Coogler continued. 'I've been trying to work with him since day one. I think he's the greatest living actor. In terms of what he means to our culture? Forget about it, man.' Funnily enough, Washington previously hinted that he'd have a part in the film, which Coogler also admitted in the interview was 'a big F**k With It,' a reference to his joke during the podcast that Washington's comments were a game of true or false called ' F**k With It or F**k Outta Here .' Essentially, now we know the involvement of this MCU actor in the Black Panther sequel is true. Now we'll just have to see who exactly Denzel Washington plays in Black Panther 3 or any other details regarding the film that has yet to receive an official spot on Marvel's release schedule. Hopefully, however, it comes together soon – especially with Ryan Coogler once again helming the project as director.

Scrapped 'Blade' helped dress 'Sinners'

Marvel Studios' long-delayed Blade reboot, once set to star Mahershala Ali, has officially been removed from Disney's 2025 release schedule. But while the troubled project remains in limbo, one piece of the film has quietly made its way to theatres — its costumes. Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E Carter, best known for her work on Black Panther, had already prepared a full wardrobe of period clothing for Blade before the production was scrapped. Much of that work ended up being repurposed for Ryan Coogler's latest film, Sinners. In an interview with ScreenCrush (via Variety), Sinners producer Sev Ohanian explained that Carter's extensive costume collection, originally intended for Blade, was purchased for use on Sinners after Marvel agreed to part with it at a reduced price. "Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting," Ohanian said. "At one point, that movie was going to deal with, and she's talked about this before, but at one point, that film was going to deal with the past around the same era as Sinners. She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and it was like, 'Yo, we got to shoot this movie like tomorrow.' And Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price." While many background actors in Sinners wore costumes originally designed for Blade, Carter created new, original looks for the film's lead characters. Though Blade's future remains unclear, Coogler is expected to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon with Black Panther 3. Denzel Washington recently confirmed he will appear in the sequel, a collaboration Coogler has been eager to realise. "There's no fiction out there," Coogler said during an appearance on Carmelo Anthony's 7PM in Brooklyn podcast. "Denzel is family at this point ... I've been trying to work with him since day one. I think he's the greatest living actor, and in terms of what he means to our culture, forget about it. I've been talking to him about this to him for a long time."

FANTASTIC FOUR Sequel Already in the Works at Marvel for 2028; AVENGERS: SECRET WARS Rumored to Be a Two-Parter — GeekTyrant

Marvel Studios may still be building hype for The Fantastic Four: First Steps , but behind the scenes, they're already thinking ahead. A new report from Variety drops the news that a sequel is already in development, and it's potentially one of the mystery titles filling Marvel's newly expanded 2028 release calendar. So what exactly is going on with Marvel's schedule? Right now, Marvel has four release dates set for 2028. That's a packed year! As fans know, the studio has shifted its approach to favor quality over quantity, and even Kevin Feige has acknowledged the need to slow things down. But, I guess they aren't sticking to that. Variety notes something intriguing: 'Other Marvel projects in development that could wind up opening in 2028 include the aforementioned Blade , Black Panther 3 , and a Fantastic Four sequel.' The Fantastic Four sequel speaks to Marvel's confidence in their upcoming film. The team will also be playing a major role in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, so if that momentum carries into a successful solo debut, a sequel will be a natural next step. This also lines up with what we've heard about the post- Avengers: Secret Wars era being a soft reboot of the MCU, a world that fully integrates the Avengers, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. Speaking of Avengers: Secret Wars , there's been fan speculation that it might be split into two epic parts across 2027 and 2028. It could get the Infinity War / Endgame . But, according to insider Daniel Richtman, he hasn't heard anything about Secret Wars being split in two. Still, 2028 looks like a pivotal year for Marvel. Assuming The Fantastic Four sticks the landing, its sequel could usher the team into the modern MCU landscape—possibly setting up a run-in with Norrin Radd, aka Silver Surfer. With the multiverse saga wrapping up and the studio eyeing a fresh chapter, don't be surprised if Marvel's First Family becomes a central pillar moving forward. Bottom line: Marvel's laying the groundwork for what comes after the endgame, and the Fantastic Four seem to be leading the charge.

Rumours surrounding the casting for Black Panther 3 have been circulating, with Damson Idris at the centre of speculation. When questioned about potential talks with Marvel Studios for a role in the upcoming film, Idris playfully responded with "yes-no" during an appearance on NBC's Today show, as per Deadline. (Also Read: Denzel Washington apologised to director Ryan Coogler for spoiler on his potential role in Black Panther 3) Damson was asked if he had been in touch with Marvel Studios after recent rumours of a role in the upcoming Black Panther movie. When asked about accepting the role if offered, Idris gave a definitive 'yes'. Damson plays Joshua Pearce in F1, co-starring Brad Pitt. Chadwick Boseman's portrayal of T'Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) left a lasting impact before his death in August 2020. He first played the role in the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War, getting his own Black Panther film in 2018. He was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, which progressed to stage IV before 2020. The franchise has continued, with Letitia Wright's Shuri taking on the heroic title in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Recent reports obtained by the publication suggest Marvel might recast T'Challa or introduce his son, Toussaint, who is played by a new actor. Denzel Washington revealed he's being considered for a role in Black Panther 3, with director Ryan Coogler confirming he's writing a part for the actor. Coogler expressed his dedication to the franchise, sharing he'll continue working on Black Panther films as long as fans will have him. According to the publication, Marvel producer Nate Moore clarified that no decisions have been made regarding the future of T'Challa or Black Panther 3, and Coogler has yet to start working on the film.
