Will Blades live long and prosper?

It's Sheffield United, Jim, but not as we know it. The red and white half of the Steel City is set for a fascinating 43 days between now and kick-off in the new Championship season. When the Blades face Bristol City at Bramall Lane on 9 August, a new chapter – heralded by the club's American owners – will begin in earnest. Advertisement For now the dust is beginning to settle on a seismic change for which tremors will undoubtedly be felt for weeks, months and years to come. It's been a busy and dramatic six months since COH Sports acquired Sheffield United. Chris Wilder was quickly given a new three-and-a-half-year contract. United claimed a club record 92 points but missed out on automatic promotion in the final few games. They then lost the Championship play-off final having led with 15 minutes to go before Wilder eventually departed by mutual consent, being replaced by Spaniard Ruben Selles. That decision has split the Blades fanbase, with social media exposing extreme opinions on both sides of the argument for and against change. Boyhood fan and former player Wilder will always be a legendary figure at Bramall Lane. He achieved this status in his first spell when he took the club from League One obscurity to ninth in the Premier League, but he deserves more credit than he has received for his second spell, including last summer's rebuild in the wake of relegation from the top-flight, with a significant turnaround of players, and the protracted takeover which continued until late December. Advertisement At Wembley in May he stood on the brink of achieving something no other manager in the club's history had achieved: three promotions. It will always sting that he came so close for Wilder, his players and the club's supporters. But a significant number of Blades fans took issue with performances last season and the club's style of play, while questioning the success of recruitment in January and the near £450,000 in fines paid over player and staff conduct. Whatever motivated the decision to act, the Blades board has acted, and in doing so, they have thrown their full weight behind former Hull City and Reading boss Selles. Their claim that he "can employ innovative recruitment and analytic strategies" is key - relating to the owners' eagerness to use data and artificial intelligence to "recruit the best and brightest talent", which is central to the intrigue about how the Blades squad will take shape under Selles, who says he will have the final say on transfers. Advertisement How many existing players will be able to deliver the intensity that the Spaniard demands? Will some Wilder regulars find themselves sidelined? Will data-driven arrivals be in the majority or minority, as opposed to "seen it, done it" Championship players? United's new board is seeking "sustainable success" and says "the road ahead may require patience", but having come so close to a Premier League return last season, patience may be in short supply if the Blades aren't in the mix for automatic promotion from an early stage. It's a brave new enterprise at Bramall Lane, with Selles tasked to boldly go and establish the Blades as a regular top-flight club.

NHL Draft: Lewandowski one of two Saskatoon Blades draft prospects

Article content A pair of Saskatoon Blades hope to hear their names called during this weekend's NHL Entry Draft. Article content European import forward David Lewandowski enters the draft after being slotted in at No. 51 for the final NHL Central Scouting rankings. Article content Article content Forward Hayden Harsanyi — who was acquired in the blockbuster trade that sent star defenceman Tanner Molendyk to the Medicine Hat Tigers — had a final Central Scouting ranking of No. 187. Article content Article content Both players were key additions to the Blades this past season. Article content Article content Blades general manager Colin Priestner believes the 6-foot-1, 177-pound Lewandowski, from Dusseldorf, Germany, has a great chance to be selected within the first three rounds. Article content Priestner says Lewandowski made the choice to leave his pro team in Europe, at the start of the year, to join the Blades and 'get more offensive opportunities than he was going to get playing men's league in Germany. 'He turned out to be one of our top players from pretty much Day 1,' noted Priestner. 'The sky's the limit for him in terms of what he can be as a player. He's got the size and the skill and the vision to be an NHL player.' Article content Lewandowski had 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points in 52 games during the regular season. He added a goal and an assist in four playoff games. Article content 'The sample size on him is a little smaller for him than some of the other players,' pointed out Priestner. 'He was here for three-quarters of a season instead of two full seasons like a lot of other draft-eligibles. But I know I'm very bullish on him as a prospect. He's got a ton of upside at the next level, just how he thinks the game. I think there's a 90-point season for him ahead next season. Article content Article content 'With his size and ability, I feel he will be a high-value prospect for whoever takes him.' Article content Article content Lewandowski also got to show his talents on the world stage, representing Germany at the IIHF world junior hockey championship, where he scored a couple of goals. Article content 'That never hurts in front of all the scouts,' acknowledged Priestner, adding that Lewandowski was playing against others who were mostly two years older than him in that tournament. Article content 'It was a great sign that he could play with older players. I think he will be one of the best players, certainly on our team and in the (WHL East) division next year. I think he will (be drafted) somewhere in the second or third round is where I'm hearing.' Article content Harsanyi, a 5-foot-9 native of Calgary, had 12 goals and 12 assists in 37 games during the regular season, split between Medicine Hat and Saskatoon.

Wrexham and Sheffield United renew rivalry after 'disrespect' jibe

Wrexham are now back in the Championship and will take on Sheffield United after some bad blood came out of their FA Cup clash several seasons ago where Billy Sharp after accused them of disrespect Wrexham and Sheffield United will renew their rivalry this season in the Championship after an epic FA Cup saga that ended with the Welsh side being accused of "disrespect". Back then Ryan Reynolds ' outfit were a non-league outfit, but pushed the Blades all the way in the FA Cup, eventually losing in a replay at Bramall Lane. They will square off again at the Racecourse Ground on Boxing Day with the return fixture being played on March 21. ‌ Wrexham were denied a famous win in the fourth round of the FA Cup when John Egan headed in a 95th minute equaliser to tie up a six-goal thriller in Wales. Paul Mullin's strike in the 86th minute looked like it might win the day, but that wasn't the case. ‌ Back in Yorkshire and Sheffield United, three leagues above their opponents were eventually able to get the job done. Mullin's penalty had made the game 1-1 and it looked set for extra-time. That was until stoppage time when the Championship side scored twice through Sander Berge and then Billy Sharp to break Welsh hearts. A stellar set of cup matches had grabbed the attention, but Sharp added fuel to the fire after. The Blades' frontman said: "I've got a smile on my face because we've got through to the next round of the cup and the boys deserved it." He said that with anything but a smile on his face. 'It was a great cup tie over two games. They played excellent. I think they've been disrespectful, though – a few things before the game, thinking they were already through. I'm glad we've beaten them. They're doing well in their league, we're doing well in ours. I wasn't happy with a few of their players tonight, but that's it now – we've got one over on them tonight. Good luck to them for promotion, and hopefully we've put that one to bed now. 'A few of their players, I wasn't happy with. Little bit frustrated at the end there – I probably should have put the game to bed before I did. It's one of those things. I want to win and I want to get through to the next round.' ‌ Sharp was pressed on what had rattled him and seemed to hint at a tweet put out by Wrexham. The fifth round draw had been made with the non-league side tagging potential opponents Tottenham, even before they'd seen off the Sheffield outfit. Which clearly didn't sit well. The striker said: 'I wasn't happy with the way they've been as a club, like before the game, eyeing up Spurs when they've not even beaten us. We're an honest set of lads and we want to go as far as we can in this competition. "If we get beaten in the next round, so be it, we'll give it a right go. But I think they thought we were just going to roll over when they got back in it. I think the referee was helping them all night as well. I don't think he gave me one foul all night tonight. But, yeah, it's one of those things. I've probably lost my head a little bit, but I've got a smile on my face..." ‌ Sharp was said to have shouted down the tunnel after the clash, which led Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson to simply say he was 'disappointed". The striker has recalled the incident on Ben Foster's Fozcast as he explained: "I went over to my mum, my dad, wife, kids, my friends, as I normally do. I blow my kids a kiss, getting coins, having a bit of banter. I do a little crying gesture to the Wrexham fans – which I could have done a lot worse. "Parky comes running over – 'What are you saying!' He is giving it loads because I'm having a bit of banter and his team has just got knocked out, I'm happy we've gone through and spoiled the underdog story. I've had a bit of beef with Parky before. No grudge. There was no need for him to get involved after the game." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
