Cardinals and Gemma Hayes to headline Kinsale Arts Weekend 2025
Kinsale Arts Weekend returns from July 10-13, rolling into town with the mighty momentum of its ninth year and a fitting theme, The Ninth Wave. This year's programme draws inspiration from Celtic myth and maritime mystery, has over 60 events and blends headline music acts like Gemma Hayes and The Cardinals, with site-specific art, performance, talks, and family-friendly events – all set against the unique backdrop of Kinsale's streets and shoreline. Kinsale Arts weekend transforms the town into a stage, with spaces from cafes to streets and churches becoming venues. Cork County Council are providing access to the newly redeveloped town library, the award winning building has become a cultural hub for the town since opening in 2023. Highlights of this year's festival include, Gemma Hayes, Live at St. Catherine's on Saturday, July 12. Ms Hayes is one of Ireland's most beloved singer-songwriters and she returns to the stage with her critically acclaimed album Blind Faith. Her stripped-back, emotionally rich performance promises to be a festival favourite. Audiences can also expect an exhilarating performance by Cork five-piece Cardinals on Sunday, July 13. The up and coming Cork indie band are renowned for their electrifying sound fuses 60s pop with gothic shoegaze, Irish folk, punk, and wall-of-sound influences. Fresh from supporting Fontaines D.C. at Finsbury Park and a memorable appearance on The Tommy Tiernan Show, their critically acclaimed debut EP showcases a bold, genre-blending style that promises an unforgettable live experience. The programme also celebrates local voices and global perspectives, from talks on climate and wave energy with Professor Tony Lewis and Dr. Tara Shine, to cross-cultural storytelling by Varun Kumar Ganguly and Mike Murphy, and community initiatives like The Play's the Thing, a multilingual theatre project set to unfold in 2026. Chairperson Anna Mulcahy said the organisers of this year's programme wanted to push past the expectations. 'I'm so proud of what our team and artists have created. Whether you're a regular or a first-timer, I can promise there's mystical creativity waiting for you in Kinsale this July. Our programme will see Kinsale transform to a stage for music, dance, visual and powerful discussion.' Programme curator Lisa O'Brien, a native of Kinsale said she is delighted to be coming home to curate this year's festival. 'Kinsale Arts Weekend has become a beacon for creativity and connection, locally rooted but open to the world. I've always believed that art should surprise, challenge and welcome in equal measure. I hope that that spirit comes through in every corner of the programme. 'I've drawn on my experience with festivals like Kilkenny Arts Festival and my passion for supporting emerging talent to shape a playful, eclectic line-up that reflects the magic of Kinsale,' she added. Kinsale Arts Weekend remains deeply committed to sustainability, accessibility, and the power of art to bring people together. From street spectacles to children's workshops, live music to visual art, Kinsale Arts Weekend is a family-friendly celebration with something for everyone to enjoy. The Spiritual And Amusing Sides Of Bad Company Bad Boy Paul Rodgers
British songwriter/singer Paul Rodgers and guitarist Jimmy Page of The Firm at Meadowlands Arena, May 9, 1985, East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo By) Getty Images In Part 1 and Part 2 of our interview series with classic rocker Paul Rodgers, we covered quite a bit: his impending induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, an amusing anecdote from a Bad Company tour in Spain, his initial thoughts on the great super-group Cream, the first time he heard his own song on the radio, where the name Bad Company came from, his work with the not-for-profit Adopt The Arts, his medical situation with a number of recent strokes, ex-band manager Peter Grant and Led Zeppelin, his upcoming memoirs and his epitaph. Below is the third and final installment in the series. Jim Clash: You were in the short-lived super group The Firm, with guitarist Jimmy Page, and toured with short-lived super group Blind Faith, with drummer Ginger Baker. Paul Rodgers: I don't think the tag "super group" is helpful to any band, really, because so much is expected of them. But yes, I toured with Blind Faith in Free when they first came out. I got to see Ginger Baker in action. He was known for throwing from the stage with incredible accuracy one of his sticks, bopping people on the head. The guy would turn around, wondering where it came from, and Ginger would just be playing away as if nothing had happened, you know [laughs]. I was standing on the side of the stage watching him one night, and he fixed his eyes on me. I thought, "Oh my God, I'm dead." He almost threw a stick at me, but he didn't [laughs]. (Photo by Michael) Getty Images Clash: Like Ginger, you were a bit of a bad ass in your youth. Who is the real Paul Rodgers underneath it all? Rodgers: You know, Jim, I'm still finding out, I really am. I'm not sure. But he's been a lot of people. What I'm working on now is my spirituality. I think that God exists. He's the entire universe, all consciousness and benevolent. If you think of God as a fire, we're all sparks of that fire. But I have been spiritual for a lot of my life. When I first heard The Beatles in London while doing my own thing, George Harrison talked about meditation. I discovered it at that point. Our lives had suddenly become very crazy. Sometimes meditation's gotten away from me, but I always come back to it to ground myself. Eventually, I've come to the point of understanding that's where I belong. Clash: Do you ever pray? Rodgers: I do pray when I need inspiration. In fact, one of The Changels choir boys during a quiet moment turned to me and asked, 'Do you believe in God?" [see Part 1 link below for context]. I was a bit flabbergasted, and said, "Yes I do actually, and I think he's everywhere." The boy simply said "Okay," and ran off to be with the rest of the choir [laughs]. Clash: Earlier, you had mentioned a heart-warming anecdote about some blind girls who had attended a Bad Company show in Spain. How about a funny anecdote from touring? SAITAMA, JAPAN - OCTOBER 26, 2005: (L-R) singer Paul Rodgers, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor of the British group Queen at Saitama Super Arena. (Photo by) Getty Images Rodgers: During the Queen Plus Paul Rodgers tour, we were always playing gags. One day my wife went to Jim Beach, Queen's manager, and mentioned that I wanted to speak with him. Each night, the maids would decorate the hotel bathrooms. They had put a chaise lounge in ours, with a sheepskin rug. So my wife bought this feather boa. She set me up on the lounge chair with the boa around my neck and called Jim into the room. Now I'm just laying there and my wife starts feeding me grapes. Jim says, "Oh no, you want to go back to the days with Freddie!' He thought Freddie had rubbed off on me. Later, as I went out to the stage, Jim kept pleading with me to take off the boa [laughs]. Poor Jim, but what a great guy.

Chase and Status bring perfect mix of epic tunes to storm gig at Co-op Live
Chase & Status, Co-op Live, Manchester As the sun set on a gloriously, sweltering day in Manchester, the city's Co-op Live was packed to the rafters and ready to party. It might not have been quite as hot as the desert of Coachella, but Chase & Status continued their 2025 gigs with all the fire you'd expect from electronic music trailblazers Saul Milton and Will Kennard. The London duo were back in the city that holds a special place in their hearts on Thursday night, for a gig of the most epic proportions. The tunes came thick and fast for 90 minutes, blending the older and new songs to absolute perfection. Flames and lasers shot out across a stadium that bounced and raved, seemingly without a care in the world, as belter after belter delighted the crowd of thousands. With Saul and Will DJ-ing firmly behind their signature light-up 'C' and 'S', a host of show-stopping MCs kept the night flowing: 'We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the beautiful people of Manchester. Make some noise for yourselves!', before launching into Blind Faith. This is Chase and Status live. — Chase & Status (@chaseandstatus) May 2, 2025 Other songs on the setlist from the 2011 album No More Idols included the gloriously angry Let You Go, party-starting No Problem, and delightfully depressing End Credits. The thing that Chase & Status do so beautifully, along with their collaborators, is blend great lyrics with drum n bass, dance, rave, and jungle, creating big beats like no other. And a word to the venue. This is the fourth time I've been to the Co-op Live, and I'd say this gig was the one that really showed it off. Hats off to Chase & Status for the epic production because they brought it – but the incredible acoustics of the arena along with the pyrotechnics and lights was next level. READ MORE: Liam Gallagher's triumphant gig brings Definitely Maybe home to Manchester 'Where's the ravers at? Where's the mosh pit crew?' came the shout from the stage during NRG. And they were there in spades. I hardly saw a single person sat down for the duration of the gig. The number one with Stormzy adorning the screens – Backbone - was obviously a highlight as was Becky Hill collab Disconnect, and Liquor and Cigarettes with ArrDee giving it large on stage. Too many to mention but a final shout-out goes to support act 4am Kru, what a warm-up. They made the stage their own and with a crew as solid as Chase & Status, that was a hard act to follow. An incredible night, if you've got a ticket for the rest of the tour then you're in for a treat.
