American Idol winner, Blue Springs native David Cook to host benefit concert for officer battling cancer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — American Idol winner and Blue Springs native David Cook will be back in town this weekend to support a police officer who's battling cancer. Blue Springs Police Department Lieutenant Brandon Claxton was diagnosed in November 2024 with Mantle Cell Lymphoma – a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The father of four also lost his wife to breast cancer recently. Things to do for Easter Weekend in Kansas City Cook will be hosting a benefit concert on Saturday at Blue Springs South High School, where he and Claxton went to school together. 'I've been so fortunate to have this platform that [American] Idol and the people who voted for me on Idol afforded me,' Cook said. He said he tries to use his platform for good and give back as much as he can. Cook said he's excited to partner with the Blue Springs Citizens Police Academy (BSCPA) Alumni Association for the concert. The money raised will help Claxton join a clinical trial for a new non-chemo treatment. However, it's in Houston, Texas. 'This journey will be long and costly flying to Houston at least once a month, but the doctor said the initial results show a 95% to a complete eradication of the cancer,' the Claxton's Shield webpage says. Cook said the opportunity to be involved and do something to help Claxton was an easy choice. 'Him and his family have always been extremely kind,' he said. Cook said he and Claxton went to middle school and high school together – and even played on the same little league football team. 'His dad was the coach on our little league team. We were not great,' Cook joked. ' We won I think one game in three years.' He said it's been years since he walked the halls of Blue Springs South. 'I'm really excited to go back. There's also like a little bit of like old high school Dave anxiety,' Cook joked. 'It'll be a good time. I know the show is going to be a blast, so I hope everybody is able to come out.' This cause is close to Cook's heart not only because he grew up with Claxton, but also because of his brother. 'I lost my older brother, Adam, to a brain tumor in 2009,' he said. Since his brother's passing, Cook has been a vocal advocate for brain cancer research. He said he's been involved with the Race for Hope through the National Brain Tumor Society for years. He's also heavily involved with Big Slick in Kansas City, which has donated several different raffle prizes for Saturday's event. If you'd like to attend Saturday's concert, general admission is $25. Tickets for the 'VIP Meet and Greet Experience' are $45. Those wanting to buy tickets can click here. You can also purchase tickets at the door. In addition to the concert, there will be a raffle for the following prizes: Chiefs tickets Big Slick Celebrity Softball & Royals game Big Slick show at T-Mobile Center To buy raffle tickets, go to Those who cannot attend but would like to help officer Claxton can donate at You can find other ways to help at Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
