The Blueair Blue Max 3250i is a best-selling smart air purifier that we awarded Best Buy in our test of the best air purifiers. It's easy to operate, has an eye-catching design and low noise noise levels. It is highly effective at clearing the air of unwanted particles such as dust, smoke and pollen, and of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the gases emitted into the air from common household items such as paint, candles and glue. It's easy to use - there's no fiddling with a filter before it's ready to be switched on - and the connecting smartphone app allows you to control the air purifier remotely. It even lets you turn the air purifier on 15 minutes before you arrive home. At £169, this is one of the cheaper air purifiers on the market but in our real-world tests it proved just as effective as models more than twice the price. It's designed for rooms of around 20 sq m, but can handle up to 48 sq m, making it adept at clearing the air in bedrooms and larger living rooms alike. Should you need something bigger, there are two more models in the range, the 3350i Max and the 3450i Max. Read on to find out how it performed in our air quality tests. JUMP TO How we test air purifiers We independently test products in real homes to reflect how you will use them. Our tests include those to find the best fan, best dehumidifier, best humidifier and best value air purifier. For the air purifier tests, each device is set up out of the box and then run for one hour on its medium setting (or auto setting if there are no controls over air filtration speed). Each model is given a score out of 10 across five metrics: air quality improvement, ease of use, design, noise and value. We look at: Air quality testing: we use an air quality monitor to measure the rate of small pollutant particles (commonly called PM2.5 and PM10), VOCs, and formaldehyde in the room before and after testing, and record any change in the overall air quality indicator (AQI) score. Noise levels: we use a decibel (dB) monitor app to check the noise of the air purifier in operation against ambient sound in the room. We record the loudest noise on max power and the quietest on its lowest setting. Value for money: this is based on a combination of the initial cost, the price of replacement filters and how frequently filters need replacing, and its energy use per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which we measure using a smart plug. For the Blueair Blue Max 3250i, we also tested how easy it was to connect to and use the app and how it performed in different rooms around the home. Air quality improvement Score: 9/10 We tested the Blueair Blue Max 3250i in a room where scented candles had previously been burning (which can emit both unwanted particles and VOCs) and pollutant levels were high. Over the space of an hour, the air purifier reduced the levels of tiny airborne particles (both the smaller PM2.5 and bigger PM10) by 98 and 99 per cent respectively. Unlike many of the other air purifiers I tested, it also reduced the amount of chemicals in the air (VOCs) by 65 per cent. Although I would have liked to see a bigger reduction, this Blueair is one of the most effective air purifiers I tested at lowering VOCs. Overall the air quality indicator (AQI) score improved from an unhealthy 152 to an excellent score of just four, an improvement of 97 per cent. No other air purifier I tested saw such improvements in a real-world setting, including far more expensive models. Ease of use This was the easiest air purifier to set up out of all those I tried out: you simply take it out of the box, plug it in and press start without any need to install a filter. There are two buttons at the top of the air purifier to turn it on and off and switch between modes, while the dimmable light on the front of the device changes colour to indicate the air quality of the room you're in. I also liked that the controls had a child lock. Although the box has a QR code on it that is supposed to link to the app, it didn't work. But it came up immediately when I searched for 'Blueair' in the App Store and it was easy to use. The app works as a remote control for the air purifier and lets you set a schedule and even turn it on and off when you're out of the house. Changing the filter is straightforward but pulling the fabric cover back into position can be a little awkward. The device itself is fairly lightweight so it's easy to move between rooms, though a carry handle would make it much easier. Design Score: 9/10 I particularly liked how the Blueair Blue Max 3250i fitted into a room aesthetically. Many other air purifiers I tested simply look functional and often have an unattractive white plastic casing, but on this device, the filter area is covered by classy grey fabric that means it can blend in with the decor of a room. The indicator light on the front of the device changes colour to show the air quality of the room at any given time, and is more subtle and less flashy than many of the other devices I tried out. And while the Blueair app is a great way of controlling the air purifier remotely, it is also easy to use the touch sensitive buttons on top of the device. Noise Score: 9/10 This device uses 'HEPASilent' technology developed by Blueair, which is a HEPA filter designed to be quiet, and it really works. On its quietest setting (night mode), the noise was barely above ambient and registered at 32dB in my tests, which was just above the ambient noise in the room of 28dB. It reached 62dB on its highest setting, which is about the level of a normal conversation, but you rarely need to set it this high. It is quiet and efficient in its 'auto' mode. Score: 9/10 The Blueair Blue Max 3250i is more efficient and better designed than some air purifiers more than twice its price of £169. The filters need changing every six to nine months depending on how often you use it. Replacement filters cost £35 and can be bought on Amazon, which puts its total running costs at £204 for its first year of use. It's higher than the more budget air purifiers from Philips or Midea but still less than half the price of high end brands like Dyson and Molekule. It's also energy efficient, using just 0.006kWh of energy when run on a medium fan speed for an hour. That means leaving it on continuously for 24 hours would cost around four pence in electricity, based on the current cost of 27 pence per kWh. On the more routine 'auto' setting, it would use even less energy. Technical specifications We compared the Blueair Blue Max 3250i with the premium Dyson Cool PC1 Air Purifier on performance, noise and value. Should you buy the Blueair Blue Max 3250i? The Blueair Blue Max 3250i is an affordable and extremely effective air purifier under £200, with impressive performance across multiple air quality indicators, an easy-to-use design and low noise levels. Yes, if: You want an air purifier that removes VOCs and unwanted particles from the air in your home. You want an easy-to-use smart air purifier you can control remotely and fits in with your decor. No, if: You need an air purifier for a space larger than 48 sq m. You want detailed air quality monitoring data. Blueair Blue Max 3250i FAQs Is the Blueair Blue Max 3250i good for allergies? Yes, it effectively removes airborne particles, including PM2.5 particles which make it a good air purifier for allergies. How often do I need to change the filter? This is an air purifier with a HEPA filter, called 'HEPASilent'. You will need to change it every six to nine months, depending on how much you use it. How loud is it? It ranges from 32dB on night mode (which is just above ambient noise) to 62dB at full power, making it a quiet air purifier to use. Does the Blue Max 3250i remove pet odours? We found it left rooms smelling clean and fresh. What size room is the Blueair 3250i suitable for? It is recommended for rooms around 20 sq mbut effective up to 48 sq m.

Dyson air purifier helps beat summer allergies - and is £100 off

Allergies might be getting Brits down - but this Dyson deal might help Brits suffering from hay fever and other summer allergies during the heat might be in luck because Amazon has a new deal on a Dyson air purifier with a big discount. The Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 i s an air purifier which works by filtering out microscopic impurities and allergens from the air. This purifier has the ability to capture gases, odours and 99.95% of pollutants as small as 0.1 microns, including allergens such as pollen and dust mites, thermal comfort temperature adjustment at night. There's connectivity via the MyDyson app, which can be flicked on and off when needed. The app even lets shoppers measure the air quality to see how the purifier is helping and what pollutants it is helping filter out. As well as that, the whole purifier, not just the filtration system, is fully sealed to HEPA H13 grade – so what goes inside, stays inside. There are alternatives as well. Argos is selling this Bush Air Purifier for £120, and there's also this £138 Blueair purifier, which also has app control. The Daily Mirror also recently reviewed the same air purifier to determine whether it was up to par. Grab the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 from Amazon for a big discount £449 £249 Amazon GET DEAL Product Description Gadget expert Laura Mulley said: "Like all Dyson products, the new Purifier Cool PC1 is really easy to set up and work out how to use, and looks incredibly slick in the home. "We have an open-plan kitchen/living room so I set this up between in the two, in the hope of capturing cooking smells, smoke from our log burner, and pollen from our back doors (I haven't quite found the best way to hide the wires, so it may end up moving further into the kitchen). "I typically keep it on 'auto' and leave it to do its thing – and this it does, automatically detecting pollution and allergen levels and adjusting its output to match, trying to keep the data in the green (or 'good') category. "I also think that it'll be a godsend in summer, when the gentle breeze it expels will be incredibly welcome; we'll probably move it into our bedroom then, when the nighttime temperature adjustment feature will come into its own (other customers have reported it really helping with sleep). I'd also previously owned another model of Dyson fan before, and the filter didn't need changing for years. "In terms of downsides, it's obviously expensive, and it's quite big (although tall, so it doesn't take up much floor space). It's also hard to pinpoint if this in itself makes a huge difference to our quality of life. But our home feels cleaner and fresher since having it; if you can afford it, I think it's a good investment."
