'It's amazing how quickly you can transform the vibe of a room': Kimberley Walsh on the power of DIY, and the surprising trick she swears by for a flawless finish
She's one of our best-known public figures, but away from the limelight Kimberley Walsh loves nothing more than pursuing her lifelong passion - DIY. It's a hobby the singer picked up from her mother, and the joy of marvelling at the impact of a well-executed interior refurb has kept her hooked ever since. Recently, she's been embarking on an exciting project - creating her own signature paint colours with Wickes. With her exquisite taste and sharp eye for trends, it's a task that suits Kimberley perfectly. And after already unveiling two paint colours - Blue Haze and Subtle Sage - she's now launching a third, Blush Rose, a sumptuous, soft shade that brings rich, vintage tones to any space. Below, we catch up with Kimberley, 43, to hear how she went about developing the stunning new paint - and the surprising tip she swears by to transform the look and feel of your home. But first, what inspired her to come up with Blush Rose? 'I've been wanting to create the perfect shade of pink since I started my paint collection,' Kimberley says. 'It's inspired by the vintage, blush roses and is such a versatile shade. It uses some grey undertones to make the pink really soft and rich. I'm so thrilled with how this has turned out.' When you've found the perfect colour, it makes sense to go all in. And that's exactly what's happening right now with the wildly popular 'colour drenching' trend, which is taking over the world of interior design. Kimberley's tips for getting a perfect, professional finish For Kimberley, DIY - particularly decorating - has been a skill she's picked up over many years. 'I learnt most of my DIY skills from my mum, she was always very hands on with that stuff when I was growing up,' she says. 'I used to be like her little apprentice and help her with it all. My Grandad used to teach us a lot too.' Asked what advice she'd give DIY newbies, the star says: 'Painting is all about the preparation. 'You need to clean all the walls and do any filling and sanding needed first. 'Once your surface is prepared the actual painting is the easy part! 'Getting a decent brush for cutting in makes a world of difference and when you come to use the roller just try and apply as evenly as possible. 'If it doesn't look perfect after the first coat it will by the second.' This nifty trick involves selecting a colour and then using it throughout a room, so it's not just on the wall, but the skirting, doors, radiators and window frames too. It's been praised for creating a cohesive look that can make rooms feel bigger and airier. While colour drenching might contrast with the traditional method of using a range of paints for different surfaces, the approach gets Kimberley's full endorsement. The star says she 'loves' the look it produces. And she adds: 'It's so much easier from a practical point of view and I love how everything flows in the space.' Embodying the move towards a lighter, softer palette over the bold, darker colours of recent years, Blush Rose is the perfect paint for a colour drench that oozes contemporary style. So it's no surprise Kimberley is planning to introduce the look into her own home 'I definitely welcomed some deeper shades into my home over the last few years but in my main living spaces I always like to go with lighter, brighter tones,' she says. I can't wait to see it in this space.' She's always sworn by paint as an affordable and easy way to enhance not only the look of your home, but the mood of it too. 'You should never underestimate how much paint colour can change the feeling in a space,' Kimberley says. 'It's only when you make the jump and change something that you realise how much it needed it sometimes. Different colours also have different influences on spaces. 'Paint is a brilliant way to refresh your home because it is relatively cheap and so easy to do. 'If you change the colour of your room the rest of the tweaks can be very superficial like changing a few cushions etc.' You only need to see the before-and-after photos to understand the power of a new lick of paint. But for Kimberley, it's not only the results of a good decorating job that she finds so satisfying, but the whole process too. 'I find DIY – especially decorating – incredibly therapeutic and mindful. It's a way of switching off and focusing on one thing,' she says. 'And you have something really amazing to show for it when you're done.. 'I just love everything about being able to transform a space and paint. It's such a brilliant way to do it. 'It's amazing how quickly you can change the whole vibe of a room by paint alone.'
