West Coast Eagles confirm Harley Reid's season over after western derby ankle injury

Harley Reid's second AFL season has ended four games early, with the West Coast Eagles confirming their rising star will miss the final month with an ankle injury. Reid was helped off the field late in Saturday's 49-point loss to Fremantle after he injured his ankle in a tackle. He had kicked two goals. Coach Andrew McQualter said after the game the 20-year-old would be sent for scans. They have revealed he suffered a syndesmosis injury, often referred to as a "high ankle sprain". "Harley Reid got his foot caught up in a tackle and has a low-grade syndesmosis injury," Eagles fitness boss Mat Inness said. "Despite being quite a low-grade injury, due to the time of season, we have ruled him out for the season." The news comes amid intense speculation in AFL circles about the long-term playing future of the highly regarded Reid, who was the AFL's number one draft pick in 2023, and whether he will return home to his native Victoria. The loss of Reid is not the only bad news for West Coast, who are languishing at the bottom of the AFL ladder with just one win for the year. Scans have also confirmed their top draft pick last year, Bo Allan, has played his last game for 2025 as well. Allan, who played in a WAFL premiership with Peel Thunder last year, has also suffered a syndesmosis injury. "Like Harley, Bo Allan got his foot caught up in a tackle at training on Thursday and suffered a low-grade syndesmosis injury," Inness said. "Once again, due to the time of the year, this will rule him out for the season." Allan, 19, managed six appearances in his first season. There was better news for key defender Harry Edwards, who was withdrawn from the Fremantle game after experiencing hamstring tightness during the warm-up. Inness said the club was hopeful Edwards would be available for this weekend's game against Melbourne.

West Coast chief executive Don Pyke says the Eagles will use every avenue available to improve one-win list

West Coast chief executive Don Pyke has pledged the club will use every lever available to them to improve their list at the end of the season. It comes as the dual premiership Eagle conceded they had 'not won often enough' as they stare down a dire one-victory season for the first time in club history. Pyke addressed the members and fans in an open letter on Wednesday, where he thanked them for their support in another difficult year. The Eagles have won only 11 of their past 86 games since the start of 2022 in the darkest on-field period in the proud club's history. And there doesn't seem to be a return to September action in sight any time soon as they prepare to claim the third wooden spoon. Last year the Eagles traded in Liam Baker (Richmond) and Matt Owies (Carlton), while they also signed Jack Graham (Richmond) as a free agent to bolster their list. They also brought in five players through the national draft — Bo Allan, Jobe Shanahan, Tom Gross, Lucca Grego and Hamish Davis — as well as Malakai Champion as a next generation academy as a category-B rookie and former Gold Coast-listed backman Sandy Brock through the pre-season supplement selection period as part of a massive list overhaul. In his second season as CEO, Pyke said they would once again look to use every avenue at their disposal to improve their list. 'The club will again use every available lever of draft, trade and free agency at the end of the season to strengthen our playing list,' he wrote. 'Pleasingly, our next generation of players are maturing and developing, with Brady Hough, Reuben Ginbey, Elijah Hewett, Harry Edwards and Harley Reid consistently impressing. 'There is plenty to be excited about from recent draftees Jobe Shanahan, Tyrell Dewar, Bo Allan, Tom Gross, Clay Hall, Malakai Champion, Archer Reid and Tom McCarthy who have shown enough in their early opportunities to indicate plenty of good AFL football lies ahead.' Pyke said they backed the path they were on despite the lack of on-field results so far in 2025. 'While we have not won often enough, we have seen encouraging performances, particularly against top four contenders Brisbane, Geelong and Collingwood, and there has been progress,' he said. 'We know we have a lot of work to do to lift ourselves back up the ladder, but we believe in the path we are on and appreciate your support. 'Our new senior coach Andrew McQualter has led the team with commitment and energy, built a strong connection with our players and is establishing a clear style of play. 'While we have not won often enough, we have seen encouraging performances, particularly against top four contenders Brisbane, Geelong and Collingwood, and there has been progress. 'Every game between now and the end of the season is an opportunity to take steps forward and everyone in our football department are determined to get better quickly.'

Allen set for defensive switch against Crows triple threat

Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) co-captain Oscar Allen is set for a return into defence after the Eagles named only two genuine key defenders to tackle Kuwarna's (Adelaide's) triple threat of tall forwards at Adelaide Oval on Sunday. The Eagles will be without five-time All-Australian Jeremy McGovern to tackle the Crows, meaning Allen is a chance to return to defence after kicking two goals in the breakthrough win over Euro-Yroke (St Kilda) at the weekend. Second-year forward Archer Reid is one five potential inclusions alongside top draftee Bo Allan, small forward Noah Long, utility Tyrell Dewar and inside midfielder Clay Hall. The Eagles have lost veteran Jamie Cripps (knee) and recruit Matt Owies (calf) from the side that beat the Saints, meaning they will be forced to make at least two changes. Allen returned to the forward line for the first time in since the Gather Round defeat to Carlton in round five, kicking two goals from 13 disposals — only the second time he's kicked multiple goals this year. Reid was rested from the game after playing the opening nine rounds and returns where he will likely partner reigning All-Australian Jake Waterman in attack. The Eagles are going to need a third tall defender to help pre-season signing Sandy Brock and 200cm backman Harry Edwards tackle Taylor Walker, Darcy Fogarty and Riley Thilthorpe — who have combined for 66 goals this year — with Allen the likely man to swing into defence. Injuries to McGovern (concussion) and Callum Jamieson (hamstring) meant out-of-contract backman Rhett Bazzo was the only other likely option but he won't make the trip to Adelaide. Allen has been named at full forward, but was named at full back last week before playing in attack. Eagles coach Andrew McQualter would not rule out Allen playing in defence against the Crows when asked before main training. Bo Allan could be welcomed back. 'The Crows do have a tall forward line that they rely on a lot, so we've got to get our contest right in that space and we'll pick a team we think most capable to do that.' Adelaide could go into the game unchanged naming only three inclusions so far in Luke Pedlar, Sid Draper and Billy Dowling. WATCH: First-game Eagle set to face Match Review scrutiny

West Coast young gun Bo Allan is sweating on a possible suspension after his debut match, with a high hit on Melbourne's Jack Viney set to attract Match Review scrutiny. WATCH THE INCIDENT IN THE PLAYER ABOVE Allan was trying to spoil the football as Viney went for a mark at half-forward during the third quarter of their clash at Optus Stadium on Saturday night. The teenager was running the other way to the former Demons captain and missed the ball with his spoil, catching Viney high which gave away a 50m penalty and resulted in a goal. Viney was shaken up by the incident but played out the rest of the match. 'I haven't looked at it again on tape, but I saw it live,' Eagles coach Andrew McQualter said. 'Vines played out the game which is usually an indication that it will be OK.' West Coast debutant Bo Allan will sweat on the MRO. The defender will finished with seven disposals and two tackles in the 32-point defeat, having spent time on West Australian product Koltyn Tholstrup. A ban would be a blow for West Coast's defensive unit, with key defender Jeremy McGovern set to miss next weekend's clash with Richmond because of concussion after an incident in the second quarter of the clash that could land Melbourne's Jake Melksham in trouble.
