Amherstburg passes bylaw allowing golf cart use on Boblo Island
Golf carts are lined up in this file photo. (Getty Images) Residents of Bois Blanc Island, or better known as Boblo Island, can now register and use their golf carts on the island. Amherstburg council adopted the required bylaw Monday night after the province accepted the town into its golf cart pilot program last month . The seasonal program grants Boblo Island residents only permission to operate golf carts on island roads from April 1 to Nov. 30. Users are first required to apply to the town for a permit at a cost of $75. Applicants will need to submit proof of current driver's license, a description of the golf cart and a photograph of each side of the cart, a certificate of insurance with a minimum liability coverage of $2 million, and a signed waiver of liability. Last month, the town sent a request to the province to add Willow Beach, Lakewood Beach and Bar Point communities to the pilot program, which is currently scheduled to run until 2031, but have not yet heard back. If approved, golf carts could be allowed on town roads with a speed limit of up to 50 km/h. - Written by Dustin Coffman/AM800 News.

Demolition day for old Boblo Dock
Demolition begins on the old Boblo Dock in Amherstburg, Ont. on July 3, 2025. (Gary Archibald/CTV News Windsor) Demolition has officially begun on the old Boblo Dock in Amherstburg. The dock along Front Road, which is owned by the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, became very dangerous and was unsafe for use. It was at risk of falling into the river. It hasn't been used since 1993, but once served as a landing point for ferries carrying passengers to and from the Boblo Island Amusement Park. Amherstburg has been calling on the government to tear it down since 2016, saying it posed a safety hazard for boaters. (Gary Archibald/CTV News Windsor) 'We had to deal with the federal government and it took more than two years, three years to finally convince them to find the money, to take it down because it's unsafe,' said Mayor Michael Prue. 'Where we go from here, I think everything will be much better. Kids won't be in danger from climbing all over it. Boats won't run into it at night because it's not lit. If there was an ice jam, it could be flowed down the river, which wasn't safe.' The dock is one of the last physical reminders of the amusement park, a destination loved by many for more than a century.

Delay in demolition of old Boblo dock
The former Boblo Island dock seen in Amherstburg, Ont. on June 5, 2025. (Gary Archibald/CTV News Windsor) The old Boblo Island dock in Amherstburg was scheduled to be demolished this week, but there's been no activity at the site. CTV News has learned the project is now delayed until next Wednesday. The dock once provided ferry passenger service heading to and from the former boblo island amusement park, but has since fallen into unsafe disrepair. In September 2024, the town received word that the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) had secured funding to remove the dock and move forward with the tending process. The DFO owns the dock on the Detroit River along Front Road South, which has fallen into a state of disrepair and is in danger of collapsing into the river. The town has been asking the federal government since 2016 to take action to remove the structure, citing its condition and the potential safety hazard to boats and commercial shipping on the Detroit River if it collapsed into the water.

Date set to demolish former Boblo Island dock
The former Boblo Island dock seen in Amherstburg, Ont. on June 5, 2025. (Gary Archibald/CTV News Windsor) A date has been set to demolish the former Boblo Island dock in Amherstburg. The town has received word the contractor selected to do the work plans to mobilize to the site on June 23. It's expected the work will be completed within seven days. Councillor Molly Allaire said the fight from everyone on council and administration has been huge in making this happen. 'I'm very happy we had a very mild winter because I was very concerned about it not being done until now,' she said. 'If this past winter was bad, the ice would have just taken it away, is my theory. Luckily it all worked out, and it will be done soon.' Allaire said it's nostalgic, but it's time to say goodbye. 'I even went to Boblo as a kid, and I still remember it,' she added. 'My husband worked there for three summers. It has a lot of history in our town for sure, but I think it's more about safety and environmental concerns.'
