FedEx retires a dozen freighter aircraft in efficiency move

FedEx Corp. said Tuesday that it permanently retired 12 aircraft and took a $21 million impairment charge during the fourth quarter as part of an effort to streamline the air network in line with demand and modernize the fleet. The Memphis, Tennessee-based express logistics giant said it removed seven Airbus A300-600 aircraft, three large MD-11 tri-engine freighters and two Boeing 757-200 (large narrowbody) freighter aircraft from the fleet. It also got rid of eight engines. During the fourth quarter in 2024, FedEx decommissioned 22 Boeing 757 cargo jets. FedEx (NYSE: FDX) said in its previous earnings report on March 20 that it had exercised options to buy eight Boeing 777 freighters and pushed back retirement of the MD-11 fleet from 2028 until 2032 because of strong international parcel demand. It also announced plans to acquire 10 additional ATR 72-600 turboprop freighter aircraft, with deliveries scheduled for the tail end of the decade. The aircraft retirements reduce FedEx's fleet to 698 aircraft, comprising 382 mainline jets and 316 feeder planes operated by partner airlines. FedEx's fleet size has ranged from 670 to 710 aircraft since 2018. FedEx still has 90 757s, 34 MD-11s and 58 A300-600s in service. FedEx is flying less in the United States after its contract with the U.S. Postal Service expired in September, its strategy to pursue premium international air cargo that is traditionally consolidated and booked on airlines by freight forwarders has increased the need for widebody freighters. FedEx reported revenues for the quarter ended May 31 inched up less than 1% to $22.2 billion and that operating margin increased 8% due to structural cost reductions in its multi-year Drive initiative and higher volumes at FedEx Express. MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) today reported the following consolidated results for the fourth quarter ended May 31 (adjusted measures exclude the items listed below): This year's and last year's quarterly consolidated results have been adjusted for: Operating income and margin improved in the fourth quarter, as the company achieved its DRIVE structural cost reduction targets. Fourth quarter results also benefited from higher volume at Federal Express and higher base yield at each transportation segment. Fourth Quarter Results Federal Express segment operating results improved during the quarter, driven by cost reduction benefits from DRIVE, increased U.S. and international export volume, and higher base yield. These factors were partially offset by higher purchased transportation and wage rates, one fewer operating day, and the expiration of the U.S. Postal Service contract. FedEx Freight segment operating results decreased during the quarter due to lower fuel surcharges, reduced weight per shipment, higher healthcare costs, increased wage rates, and one fewer operating day. These factors were partially offset by higher base yield and a $33 million gain on the sale of a facility. Fourth quarter results include a noncash impairment charge of $21 million ($0.07 per diluted share) from the decision to permanently retire 12 aircraft, including seven A300-600 aircraft, three MD-11 aircraft, and two Boeing 757-200 aircraft, plus eight related engines. These retirements are aligned with the company's fleet reduction and modernization strategy as the company continues to improve its global network efficiency and better align air network capacity with anticipated demand. Last year's fourth quarter results included a noncash impairment charge of $157 million ($0.48 per diluted share) from the decision to permanently retire 22 Boeing 757-200 aircraft and seven related engines. Last year's fourth quarter results also included an income tax expense of $54 million ($0.22 per diluted share) from the remeasurement of U.S. state deferred income tax balances related to the merger of FedEx Ground and FedEx Services into Federal Express Corporation. For the full fiscal year, FedEx Corp. reported the following consolidated results (adjusted measures exclude the items listed above for the applicable fiscal year): Results include lower structural costs as the company achieved its $2.2 billion fiscal 2025 DRIVE target and delivered $4.0 billion in total DRIVE structural cost reductions relative to fiscal year 2023. Capital spending for fiscal 2025 was $4.1 billion, down $1.1 billion or 22% from $5.2 billion in fiscal 2024. Capital spending as a percentage of revenue declined to 4.6%, the lowest level in FedEx Corp. history. Capital Returns During fiscal 2025, FedEx returned approximately $4.3 billion to stockholders through the combination of $3.0 billion of stock repurchases, above the original $2.5 billion stock repurchase plan, and $1.3 billion of dividend payments. Repurchases during fiscal 2025 totaled approximately 10.9 million shares or 4.5% of the shares outstanding at the beginning of the year, and increased fourth quarter and full-year earnings by $0.28 and $0.44 per share, respectively. As of May 31, 2025, $2.1 billion remained under the company's 2024 stock repurchase authorization. For fiscal 2026, FedEx remains committed to returning capital to stockholders, including the previously announced 5% increase ($0.28 per share) in the annual dividend on its common stock, to $5.80 per share. The company also intends to continue a robust share repurchase program. A trip honoring the legacy of Pan American World Airways is underway after a chartered jet bearing the historic airline's branding took to the skies earlier in the week. The plane left John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Tuesday, kicking off a 12-day trip that came with a roughly $60,000 price tag for its passengers, CBS New York reported. Advertisement The trip, described as 'a Pan Am journey by private air,' comes as part of a collaboration between Criterion Travel and Bartelings with licensing from Pan American World Airways. The operators want to give passengers the 'opportunity to relive a 'Golden Age of Travel' on a specially curated program' with the Pan Am trip, according to a brochure on Criterion Travel's website. The itinerary for the round-trip journey features stops in locales that were on Pan Am's Southern and Northern transatlantic routes, including Bermuda, Lisbon, Portugal, Marseille, France, London, England and Shannon, Ireland. The brochure for the 'Tracing the Transatlantic' trip touts 'high-end service, stays at top hotels, fascinating destinations, reminiscences of Pan Am's glory days, and iconic Pan Am design, logos, and identity popping up throughout.' The Brief Delta Flight 1576 from Atlanta to Orlando was diverted to Jacksonville on Monday after smoke was reported in the cabin and the crew declared a pressurization issue. The plane landed safely, and the FAA is investigating the incident. ORLANDO, Fla. - A Delta Air Lines flight en route from Atlanta to Orlando was forced to divert to Cecil Airport in Jacksonville on Monday afternoon after smoke was observed in the cabin and the crew reported a pressurization issue, according to officials. Delta Flight 1576, a Boeing 757-200 carrying 200 passengers, landed safely around 2 p.m. after the flight crew declared an emergency. No fire was found onboard, and all passengers deplaned at a ground facility, the airline said. Delta is arranging ground transportation to get passengers to Orlando and apologized for the disruption, stating that "safety comes before everything else." The Federal Aviation Administration said the pressurization issue will be investigated.
