Can Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love Be This Year's Ashton Jeanty?

Can Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love Be This Year's Ashton Jeanty? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For a few years, it seemed like the NFL had moved on from valuing running backs as being worthy of premium draft picks. Advertisement But in recent years, a handful of truly elite prospects have proven that if teams want to land special talents at the position, they deserve to be picked early. The likes of Saquon Barkley (No. 2 overall), Christian McCaffrey (No. 8 overall), Bijan Robinson (No. 8 overall), and Jahmyr Gibbs (No. 12 overall) have all become superstars, and the 2025 NFL Draft delivered another candidate in Ashton Jeanty, who landed with the Las Vegas Raiders with the No. 6 overall pick. That reversing of the trend could have NFL teams and fans looking ahead to next year's draft in hopes of finding yet another potential top-10 pick in the offensive backfield, and Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love is likely to be at the top of the list. Ashton Jeanty put up historic numbers at Boise State last year before being a top-10 NFL draft J. Rebilas-Imagn Images But is Love in the same stratosphere as Jeanty heading into the 2025 college football season? Advertisement On the latest episode of "Best Podcast Available," I sat down with NFL writer Doug Farrar to discuss the top prospects in next year's draft class, and asked about the comparison between Jeanty and Love. "I don't compare backs to LaDanian Tomlinson," Farrar said. "And I don't use the word 'generational,' because it's stupid. But I've done both with Jeanty, without hesitation. That's the level we're talking about here. There are elements of Emmitt Smith. He's just rare." Despite facing more nine-man boxes than any other team in college football outside of Army, Jeanty delivered one of the most historic seasons we've ever seen from a running back at that level, finishing second in the Heisman Trophy voting behind another rare talent in Colorado two-way superstar Travis Hunter. "When you're the epicenter of your offense, and you're still unstoppable, that puts you in a different category," Farrar said of Jeanty's ridiculous production despite the consistent attention from opposing defenses. Jeremiyah Love is widely regarded as the top running back prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft class.© Matt Cashore-Imagn Images Love had an impressive 2024 season, to be sure, helping the Fighting Irish make it all the way to the national title game, and providing some highlight-reel moments along the way. He's widely regarded as the top running back prospect in the 2026 class, and a likely first-round pick barring injury, but he's still got a ways to go before he can be put in the same sentence as Jeanty. Advertisement "I think Jeremiyah Love will be a great back in the NFL, but he's not Ashton Jeanty," Farrar said. "I'm sure there will be those comparisons, but they're ill-advised, at best. And that's not a slam on Love at all." During Super Bowl week earlier this year, Farrar had a chance to speak with Robinson, who has quickly established himself as one of the league's most dynamic backs with the Atlanta Falcons, and the former Texas star admitted that Jeanty reminds him of himself. "You don't often get NFL players saying that about draft prospects," Farrar said. "That's just Jeanty setting himself apart." Minnesota Vikings could cut Minnesota QB in favor of more veteran presence

With training camp on the horizon, projections are coming in for the Vikings' 53-man roster from every corner of the media circle. The latest comes from the well-respected Judd Zulgad, who recently spoke about his thoughts on the Vikings roster while on The Purple Daily Podcast. The conversation included the entire roster on a recent episode, but the discussion around the quarterback position proved to be most interesting. Don't worry, there was no suggestion of Kirk Cousins or anyone else coming back. Instead, they did focus on the idea of a veteran presence being the one they lean on in the quarterback room. Zulgad explains, 'Now, I do think that Brosmer winds up spending the season on the Vikings' practice squad, I guess the wild-card here is, what does Howell show in training camp? Does Howell firmly take hold of the No. 2 position and prove he belongs there? Do the Vikings say, 'You know what? There might be better options?' But as of now… as we head into the offseason, the last gasp of it at least — McCarthy, Howell, Rypien.' Rypien has proven to have a soft spot in Kevin O'Connell's mind as he builds out his quarterback room every year he has been on the roster. The former Boise State quarterback has had a live arm since his college days, and it's something that makes him a fun player to keep around on the practice squad. It will be interesting to see how reps are split during training camp and in preseason games between Rypien and Brosmer as the competition heats up.

Saints hire their new injury rehab director from Kellen Moore's alma mater

It didn't take long for the New Orleans Saints to find a new director of rehab after Jonathan Gress left for a homecoming at Oklahoma earlier this month. Nick Underhill reports that the Saints hired Garrett Holle for that vacancy; he previously worked at Boise State as their assistant athletic director in sports performance and health and wellness. Holle arrived at Boise State in 2023 and quickly climbed the ladder in their sports medicine department. He confirmed the move himself in an announcement from his official Instagram account, along with a message of thanks to all the friends he met at Boise State. Good for him. Holle is a younger guy, having earned his bachelor's degree in biology at Fort Hays State in 2016 (coincidentally, Saints defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd was a member of the football team at the time) before studying further at Kansas and Northern Arizona. In-between completing his studies and working in college athletics, he was a physical therapist at several different private institutions. Still, this is a big jump. And it carries a lot of pressure given the Saints' history with injuries and frustrating rehab experiences after surgery. Hopefully, Holle's fresh perspective makes a big difference in 2025 and beyond.
