Five most scenic picnic spots in and around Bolton for National Picnic Month
Bolton is set for sunny skies and soaring temperatures this weekend, which makes it the perfect time to pack a picnic and explore the borough's best outdoor spots. As this month marks National Picnic Month – here are five of the best spots to picnic around Bolton, just make sure to take your rubbish home with you! Jumbles Country Park What better way to enjoy a picnic than whilst observing the serene stillness of the reservoir? With plenty of woodland surrounding Jumbles Reservoir, this route gives picnickers chance to take in the peaceful tranquillity of the water, as well as the lovely woodland surrounding it. For those who love history, head to the nearby Turton Tower, which was originally built in the late Middle Ages and is a scheduled ancient monument. Moss Bank Park This huge park and play area are perfect for children and the surrounding greenery is popular among residents and dog walkers. For those who fancy some light activity after their picnic, the park also boasts numerous tennis courts open for both amateurs and professional players. Doffcocker Lodge Just a couple of miles from Bolton town centre there is a picturesque mill lodge turned nature reserve called Doffcocker Lodge. Tucked away between Chorley Old Road, Moss Bank Way and Markland Hill Lane, the site offers great opportunities for bird watching and fishing. It is a relatively small area with part of the site a designated Nature Reserve. The lodge, which has special floating rafts to allow birds to nest without fear of predators, is also a popular spot for keen birdwatchers. For those who fancy a beer to accompany their picnic, there's the local pub, Bob's Smithy Inn, which is situated on Chorley Old Road. As well as outdoor seating, the family-run gastro pub serves locally sourced, home-cooked food. Turton and Entwistle Reservoir Circular For those who wish to accompany their picnic with a walk in the sunshine, this spectacular circular route is the perfect family-friendly outing. A slightly longer walk at 4km, this route is an easy one and thought to take an average of 49 minutes to complete. It is also suitable for all fitness levels. And a walk around the area certainly makes for a lovely afternoon that can be enjoyed any time of year. When constructed in 1832 the Entwistle Dam was the highest in Britain, standing at 108 feet from the base. Bolton Abbey waterfall If you like walking, you'll know there are plenty of routes to take in and around Bolton, but have you ever picnicked by a waterfall? Bolton Abbey is in Skipton and takes around one hour and 20 minutes to drive there from Bolton. Whilst this may seem a long journey for a picnic, the views make it worth this trip worth it – especially with the promise of a delicious picnic feast for those able to successfully compete the feat!

Firm launches recruitment drive in Bolton after landing major contract with council
A business, which was founded in 1971, has launched a recruitment drive after winning a major contract with Bolton Council. Thermatic Technical FM will deliver electrical services across the borough's corporate and school buildings. Bosses say that this three-year partnership marks an exciting new chapter for the business, which is currently seeking skilled local professionals to join the team. Salford based Thermatic is calling on electricians, PAT testers, and apprentices from the Bolton area to apply for positions. Man charged with fraud relating to malpractice at borough council
A man has been charged with fraud after a police investigation into malpractice at a borough council in Greater Manchester. Richard Shaw, 45, has been charged with fraud by abuse of position after the 'comprehensive' probe into Bolton Council, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said. The offences are alleged to have been committed over eight years between February 2015 and April 2023. Bolton Council has been a member of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority since 2011. Detective sergeant Daniel Sanchez said: 'We have worked carefully through all information and evidence, from which we have now secured a charge. 'Our team have remained in close contact with the local authority, who have assisted us throughout this process. 'As this case moves to a next level of proceedings, we continue to work with all appropriate partners and the CPS.' Shaw, of Harrier Close, Bolton, will appear in court at an as yet unconfirmed later date.

Man charged after £900k went missing at Bolton Council
A former council employee been charged with fraud over claims that £900,000 went missing from the authority's Shaw, 46, is alleged to have committed the offences over an eight year period while working at Bolton Manchester Police's economic fraud unit began an investigation after cash from the council's adult services budget could not be accounted for. The local authority said anyone who lost out financially had been fully refunded. Mr Shaw, of Harrier Close, Bolton, has been charged with fraud by abuse of position. The offences are alleged to have been committed between February 2015 and April 2023. Losses refunded Det Sgt Daniel Sanchez said: "We have worked carefully through all information and evidence, from which we have now secured a charge."Our team have remained in close contact with the local authority, who have assisted us throughout this process."As this case moves to a next level of proceedings, we continue to work with all appropriate partners and the Crown Prosecution Service."Bolton Council said: "The council notes that the former employee has now been charged and will be subject to court proceedings."Any identified financial losses for individuals have been refunded by the council in full."We will always proactively seek to deter, prevent and detect any instances of fraud and corruption, with police referrals made where appropriate in accordance with council policy."
