All aboard: Border City Express to Carlisle to set off in October

Tickets for a second steam train experience from Bradford have been launched, after tickets for the first journey sold out. The Border City Express will run from Bradford to Carlisle and back on Saturday, October 4, via the scenic Settle-Carlisle line, following the success of The West Yorkshireman train's journey in May. The May service saw more than 400 passengers board at Bradford Forster Square, according to a spokesperson. The service is organised by the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company and marks three major milestones: Bradford's City of Culture year, the 200th anniversary of passenger rail (Rail 200), and the 150th anniversary of the Settle-Carlisle line. John Moorhouse, deputy chairman of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, said: "Our May charter train was so successful, we sold out all the tickets, leaving many people disappointed that they couldn't join us. "We decided to run a second train in Bradford's City of Culture year. "This is also a very important year for the rail industry as we celebrate Rail 200, the 200th anniversary of passenger rail. "Passengers will have the opportunity to visit the Farmers Market in the gardens of Carlisle Cathedral, in the Historic Quarter of the city. "There will be time to explore the historic landmarks in Carlisle, including Carlisle Castle, the Cathedral, and Tullie House Museum, before returning via the Settle-Carlisle line to Bradford." The Border City Express will depart from Bradford Forster Square and join the Settle-Carlisle Line to Carlisle, before the return journey back down the line, which will include travelling over the Ribblehead Viaduct. The train will be powered by an engine from the West Coast Railway pool of steam engines, which includes The Tornado and Scots Guardsman. Passengers will be able to choose from Premier Dining, First Class, or Standard Class in heritage carriages. Tickets for The Border City Express are now on sale through the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company website at
