Sarawak keen to support Nusantara's development through strategic collaboration
KUCHING: Sarawak has reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to the development of Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara, with a focus on clean energy, infrastructure, and cross-border economic collaboration. This was conveyed by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan during a roundtable dialogue held in Balikpapan between the Sarawak government and East Kalimantan on Saturday. Borneo Post reported that key areas of potential collaboration discussed included renewable energy, particularly hydropower and biomass, along with healthcare, education, tourism, infrastructure and trade facilitation. "Nusantara's ambition to achieve full renewable energy by 2045 aligns closely with Sarawak's clean energy aspirations, particularly in hydropower and biomass," said Awang Tengah. He said Sarawak is expanding its clean energy portfolio through hydroelectric, solar and biomass development, and sees synergy in potential collaboration in North and East Kalimantan. To enhance cross-border trade and investment, both parties are working toward the joint development of special economic zones and industrial parks at strategic border points, which are expected to strengthen connectivity and stimulate job creation. Awang Tengah also said that both governments are committed to exploring cooperation in sustainability and the circular economy, including joint conservation efforts, carbon trading initiatives and the adoption of green technologies. The dialogue also touched on efforts to boost tourism between the two regions through improved road networks, development of new airports and establishment of direct flight routes. A key outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sarawak Business Federation (SBF) and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) to establish a Joint Task Force focused on strategic development initiatives. "This MoU marks a renewed commitment to collaborative growth, reinforcing our shared vision for a more integrated and prosperous Borneo," Awang Tengah said. He added that the roundtable dialogue had strengthened longstanding historical and cultural ties between Sarawak and Kalimantan, while reflecting Kalimantan's evolving economic landscape and diversification beyond traditional sectors. The Sarawak delegation included Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Deputy Minister Datuk Ripin Lamat, Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Datuk Seri Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Economic Planning Unit director Datuk Lester Matthew, and senior government and industry representatives. Their Indonesian counterparts comprised officials from the East Kalimantan Provincial Government, Nusantara Capital City Authority (OIKN), Kadin, and local business associations.

(UKAS pic) PETALING JAYA : The RM450 million Miri Marina bridge will help turn the city into the San Francisco of Sarawak, says Abang Johari Openg. The Sarawak premier said the two-lane cable-stayed bridge would not only offer scenic views of the South China Sea but would reduce travel time between Pulau Melayu and the Marina to five minutes from the current half an hour. 'This landscape upgrade in Miri, with its iconic facilities and connectivity infrastructure, aligns with the city's image as the resort city of northern Sarawak, putting it on par with other tourist destinations,' Abang Johari was quoted as saying by the Borneo Post. He said this at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre. The construction of the 650-metre bridge, styled after the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. It will take four years to complete. Separately, the Dayak Daily quoted Abang Johari as saying that the project is expected to boost tourism and the local economy as well as resolve congestion issues.

Ex-Sabah rugby player jailed 12 years for causing sister's death
The court heard that a note written by his sister had 'provoked' Arden Mattson Maturin, leading to an altercation between the two. (Pexels pic) PETALING JAYA : A rugby player who used to represent Sabah has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Kota Kinabalu High Court for causing his sister's death in 2023. This comes after Arden Mattson Maturin, 28, pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, The Borneo Post reported. Arden was initially charged with murder two years ago and was supposed to go on trial today, but the deputy public prosecutor's office had accepted his representations. Today, he was charged with causing the death of his younger sister, Audrey Maturin, 24, at a house in Taman Prestij, off Jalan Signal Hill, on May 4, 2023. The charge under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code is punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a fine, upon conviction. Justice Duncan Sikodol ordered Arden's 12-year jail term to begin from the date of his arrest on May 4, 2023. The court heard that Arden and Audrey were at the family home when a note she had written to him purportedly 'provoked' him, leading to an altercation between the two. Arden then assaulted his sister repeatedly and left the house. Audrey was found in a pool of blood in the living room and died in hospital two days later. A post-mortem revealed she had suffered severe traumatic brain injury with haemorrhagic shock and multiple facial fractures. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, neck and chest. Sikodol ruled that the incident occurred in the heat of the moment, driven by rage, and that Arden was young and had expressed remorse over the incident. The judge, however, said the jail sentence was necessary given public interest in the case and to reflect the sanctity of life. 'I am of the view that a sentence of 12 years' imprisonment strikes the necessary balance between punishment and compassion. It reflects the gravity of the act while acknowledging the tragic familial context in which it occurred,' he said when delivering his judgment.
