Lana Del Rey's Deep South fantasia

Photo byfor ABA 'My body is a map of LA,' Lana Del Rey sings softly on 'Arcadia', the second single from her 2021 album Blue Banisters. From her debut album, Born to Die (2012), through eight subsequent records, Del Rey's music has traversed the US, bouncing between New York – Coney Island, Brooklyn – and Los Angeles, with a slight detour to Florida for 2014's Ultraviolence. Both her lyrics and aesthetic offer a romanticised nostalgia for an America long past: the US flag, muscle cars and the fashion of Old Hollywood, JFK, Marilyn Monroe and Norman Rockwell. On 3 July, Del Rey brought this brand of Americana to a sold-out Wembley Stadium, the first of two nights. Del Rey is known for her lateness – whether it's arriving on stage or delayed album releases – and this, combined with the lack of any acknowledgement of upcoming shows on her social media, led fans to joke about whether she even knew she was touring. But the 90-minute performance didn't disappoint. Blending songs old and new in her signature melancholic tone, from the breakthrough 'Video Games' to her version of the jazz standard 'Stars Fell on Alabama', she brought the audience under her spell. Del Rey's delayed next album – which these shows were initially planned to promote – is a country record. At Wembley, the influence of the Deep South was unavoidable, even on pop-soul ballads such as 'Ride'. The set was a whimsical farmhouse, complete with white picket fence and rustic furniture, in front of a projected backdrop of a star-spangled sky. In full-circle Southern belle dresses, Del Rey swayed by the veranda as piano chords blended into the soft guitar twang of the country-inspired 'Henry Come On'. 'I have 57.5 million listeners on Spotify,' she sings staccato on '57.5', which will appear on the new album. But Lana Del Rey's stardom has already overtaken her: 59 million people now stream her music on the platform each month, as she shapes the cultural scene of the country that shaped her. (Image: 2025 Getty Images ) On Monday, June 23 Lana Del Rey kicked off her UK and Ireland tour in Cardiff's Principality Stadium. She stepped out on to "one of the most detailed and distinctive sets", which consisted a full Southern-style house sat in the centre, surrounded by a swamp-like set with greenery, a willow tree, and soft fairy lights. Very Lana. The show had mixed reviews from fans as some criticised the length of the set and questioned its suitability for a stadium venue, while others "loved it". The night was filled with tears from both the crowd and the singer as she declared, "I truly love you Cardiff." ‌ Lana has since taken to social media to share her love for the country, and thanking the audience for "showing out for our first show." One person said: "i loved it girl wouldn't wanna be anywhere else." Another added: "the set is so beautiful. can't wait to see the rest of the tour." The singer is celebrated for chart-topping tracks such as Summertime Sadness, Born to Die, Video Games, and Young and Beautiful, graced Wales with her presence for the first time, despite her infrequent UK shows. ‌ Before the concert, speculation was rife amongst her fanbase, with some doubting whether she would perform at all. However, their concerns were alleviated when they spotted the songstress post-rehearsal the previous night, where she warmly engaged with fans who serenaded her with Happy Birthday, celebrating her recent 40th. Despite the buzz, the star's latest spectacle seems to have slightly missed the mark for some attendees. A common grievance was her tardiness, arriving just shy of 9pm, reminiscent of her Glastonbury stint two years prior when she faced a mic cut-off for being half an hour late, attributing the delay to her hair preparations. Some concertgoers expressed frustration with the length of the performance, citing the 1 hour and 20 minute-long show as underwhelming for a stadium event, especially when compared to artists like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé who often perform for over three hours. Furious Lana Del Rey fans have same complaint after singer brings tour to UK

Lana Del Rey is in the UK playing shows for her highly-anticipated tour. However, as the tour kicked off last night in Cardiff, many fans shared their disappointment Fans were bursting with excitement as singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey - who rarely performs in the UK - kicked off her UK and Ireland tour last night. The Born to Die singer, who headlined at Coachella last year, is performing in Glasgow tomorrow, Liverpool on Saturday, at Wembley Stadium in London on July 3 and 4, with tickets still available. She will also be performing in Dublin on June 30. Band London Grammar and singer Banks are supporting her on much of the tour. Plus, TikTok star turned recording artist, Addison Rae, will join her for the London shows. However, many were left confused by her performance at Cardiff's Principality Stadium last night (Tuesday, June 24). Following the highly-anticipated performance, they rushed to social media to share their thoughts. Many complained about the songs and length of her set list, while others noted her lateness, and some were unimpressed by the staging and "hologram performance". 'Very disappointing' One individual shared clips from the concert and asked: "Anyone else left the Lana Del Rey concert in Cardiff high key underwhelmed? The ticket cost way too much for how short her setlist was." Sharing their experience, one commented on the post and said: "Very disappointed indeed. £290 for two tickets to have her on for an hour ish... and 15 mins of that it was a hologram type video of her! Shocking." One other wrote: "100%. My fist time seeing her and it was meant to be the pinnacle of concerts for me and my partner. I felt underwhelmed and a bit dissatisfied. She is a ledge though so still think she's amazing." Another shared: "I saw her in a O2 academy in 2013 and it was one of the best concerts I've been to. Last night was so disappointing and 100% agree with you." Another viral video showed her performing and the concert goer said: "Lana Del Rey kicked her UK&Ireland Stadium Tour. Unfortunately she was not ready for a stadium tour and it became a disappointing concert.." 'No attention to detail' In another video, one individual said: "Lana came on at 8.53pm till 10.16pm. Snogged her husband. Sang Salvatore but read the lyrics from an iPhone!". Commenting on this post, one individual sarcastically wrote: "Our favourite part was when she performed three songs as a hologram in the window…" One other shared: "We paid nearly £500 for 2 tickets on the side 12 rows from front. Unfortunately the staging is not built for visibility, it's a box where you can only really see directly from the front and half the show she is way back in this box." They also noted: "The staging although atmospheric was just not visible. When you pay that much you expect to see. Also 3 songs not live just like watching a TV. The easing platform was a highlight but again saw all the mechanisms, no attention to detail." 'It was absolutely beautiful' However, there were many who enjoyed the show. One gushed: "I went, thought it was wonderful." Another supporter who had a great time added: "I don't know what you all saw but it was amazing. She was supposed to finish at 10 but kept the show going later because she was late on stage. "Her vocals were amazing and you all saying she wasn't good or it was disappointing are just sad she didn't sing Summertime Sadness 10 times." One other insisted the show was a "cinematic masterpiece". They added: "It is so rare for concerts to have a story for the show. The stage set was absolutely beautiful. She did perform most of her hits as well as some fan favourites." Another fan said: "I thought the stage was absolutely stunning I loved the house, lighting and use of green screen. I feel like not everyone understands what to expect at a Lana show. I found it super emotional and beautiful." And another agreed: "I also went last night and it was a dream come true for me, I don't know why everyone's being a negative Nancy."

Lana Del Rey fans all have same complaint after singer's tour starts in Cardiff

Lana Del Rey fans all have same complaint after singer's tour starts in Cardiff Fans took to social media after the highly-anticipated concert Lana Del Rey kicked off her UK and Ireland stadium tour in Cardiff last night (Image: Getty Images for ABA ) Last night popular American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey opened her UK and Ireland tour in Cardiff's Principality Stadium. However, her confusing performance has left fans divided, with many feeling the set was too short and not fit for a stadium, whilst others praised the "magical show". The artist, known for hits like Summertime Sadness, Born to Die, Video Games and Young and Beautiful, was playing in Wales for the first time, with her UK appearances known for being few and far between. Tickets are still available for the rest of the UK tour on Ticketmaster. Lana Del Rey will be performing in Scotland, Liverpool and Dublin before the tour comes to a close under the Wembley arches on July 4. Curiosity had gripped fans in the lead-up to the concert with some suggesting she might not even appear. They were however reassured after catching a glimpse of the American the night before whilst leaving rehearsals. Lana greeted fans as they sang her a belated Happy Birthday, days after she turned 40. In the end, her highly-anticipated show seems to have fallen just short of some fans expectations. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here . Many complained about her arriving late, just before 9pm, although this is a common tale. Lana's Glastonbury performance two years ago saw organisers cut her mic after she turned up half an hour late, telling festival-goers she was busy getting her hair done. Others seemed disappointed by the length of the concert, claiming the one hour and 20 minute-long show was disappointing for a stadium gig. Music fans have become accustomed to the likes of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé performing for over three hours. This was somewhat made worse when multiple songs were performed by a hologram, as the Summertime Sadness singer waited in the wings. The American arrived on stage visibly emotional at the 70,000-strong Cardiff crowd, needing an emergency hug and kiss with husband Jeremy Dufrene after performing opener, Stars Fell on Alabama. One fan wrote on X: "Lana Del Rey that Cardiff concert was SO crap. 1h20min concert with Lana hiding behind the stage for 20 min while playback plays." Dylan said on X: "Lana Del Rey's Cardiff show wasn't even 90 minutes and she was late? Abysmal." Lana Del Rey performed in front of a full-sized house (Image: Getty Images for ABA ) On TikTok, Balazsbalog said: "I don't want to be negative, but the opening of Lana Del Rey's UK and Ireland Tour was disappointing. Here's why ... Terrible setlist, this was a stadium concert, not a country rodeo show. She spent so much time off-stage, behind the scenes. It made the show chaotic. "She/her production was so late, they definitely cut the setlist for the curfew. Stadium concerts are 2-2.5 hours long, this was 90 minutes short. Two of the songs NFR and Arcada were video Lana and studio vocals, it was disappointing. The sound production was horrible." They added: "She was very nice but this couldn't save her concert." Someone else posted a video on TikTok and wrote: "Anyone else left the Lana Del Rey concert in Cardiff high key underwhelmed?" There was however a lot of praise for the popular singer. One person on TikTok said: "This entire performances was sensational." Another added: "LANA DEL REY IN CARDIFF WAS SO AMAZING YESTERDAY. I'm so tired I had 0 sleep the night before and queued up with my sisters from 6:30am." Another fan offered their support: "Tbf we shouldn't think that 2.5-3.5 hour concerts should be the norm. Bey and Tay were amazing for doing that, but it's not necessarily normal." "Cracking solo date to Lana Del Rey in Cardiff. Mega good," one fan posted. Article continues below Lana Del Rey now takes her tour to Glasgow, Liverpool, Dublin and London. She will be supported by Banks in Glasgow, Liverpool and Dublin, before Addison Rae opens at Wembley. Tickets are still available for the rest of the tour, on Ticketmaster.
