Former Wisconsin basketball guard signs professional contract
Taking his talents overseas!Congrats to @KamariMcGee on signing a deal with KK Jahorina! Former Wisconsin basketball guard Kamari McGee signed a contract with Bosnia's KK Jahorina on Tuesday. McGee becomes the third former Badger to sign a professional contract overseas, following Carter Gilmore (Netherlands) and Markus Ilver (Estonia). The 6-foot guard originally joined Wisconsin as a transfer during the 2022 offseason. He began his college career at UW-Green Bay, where he appeared in 30 games as a true freshman in 2021. PM Modi's Zagreb trip spurs €1.1 bn Indian bids for Croatian projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Zagreb last month is prompting growing interest from Indian companies in major infrastructure projects in Croatia. Over the past week, Afcons Infrastructure Ltd submitted three bids for state railway and road-building projects in the euro area's newest member, worth 1.1 billion euros ($1.3 billion) in total. Another Indian company, a conglomerate led by Ashoka Buildcon Ltd, is also vying for the same railway reconstruction contract as Afcons. Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic praised India's growing interest in maritime trade routes to the Mediterranean when he met his Indian counterpart in June to discuss mutual economic and defense cooperation. New Delhi is a relative newcomer to the Balkans where Beijing has invested heavily in infrastructure projects through its Belt and Road initiative. A Chinese consortium led by China Road and Bridge Corporation built a 2.4 kilometre (1.5 miles) Peljesac bridge, Croatia's largest sea bridge, that opened in 2022 and was paid for mainly using European Union funds. It helped connect the country's coastal territory and bypass a strip of Bosnian territory in a boost to transport and tourism. As part of the tender process, the Mumbai-based Afcons on Monday submitted the lowest bid in the railway reconstruction tender by HZ Infrastruktura, estimated at 620 million euros. It's one of the biggest railroad plans in Croatia's modern history, financed in part from EU funds. In the two other highway-building projects in southern Croatia, Afcons is facing competing bids from China Road and Bridge Corporation. Afcons bid 240.5 million euros and 214.4 million euros respectively. Negri gear up for a fightback season
PETALING JAYA: Negri Sembilan are on a full throttle mode in a bid to leave last season's struggles behind and stake a stronger claim in the upcoming Super League campaign. Head coach Nidzam Jamil hopes a revamped squad will be ready to face Johor Darul Ta'zim in their opening Super League game on Aug 12 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium at Iskandar Puteri. Powered by eight import players, they are hoping to turn things around after the Deer finished 12th out of 13 teams. Nidzam said their aggressive recruitment drive reflected a renewed ambition. 'Two more foreign players are arriving next week. I can't disclose names or positions yet, but they'll add much-needed depth and balance to the squad,' said Nidzam. Sources suggest they are likely to be a central defender and another midfielder – positions critical to strengthening the spine of the team. The club have retained some familiar faces from last season, including Japanese midfield maestro Takumi Sasaki, who is expected to pull the strings in the middle of the park, and versatile South Korean An Sang-su, who offers flexibility in both midfield and attack. On the new arrivals list, Bosnian winger Jovan Motika joins from Kuala Lumpur, while Ghanaian forward Joseph Esso makes the move from Dreams Dawu in Ghana. To further bolster the side, Negri have also brought in two players on loan - tough-tackling Ghanaian midfielder Alex Agyarkwa from Selangor, and nimble Japanese winger Mio Tsuneyasu from Gainare Tottori. The club's impressive domestic recruitment includes striker Luqman Hakim Shamsuddin, goalkeeper Azri Ghani, centreback Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee, fullback Ariff Ar-Rasyid, winger Hakimi Abdullah, and young midfielder Haiqal Haqeemi. Negri are currently in the thick of pre-season preparations, with a series of friendlies designed to build rhythm and refine tactics. 'These friendlies are vital, not just for fitness, but for building understanding within the squad,' said Nidzam. 'We want to sharpen our tactics and improve the team's dynamism, especially in defence and attack.' 'Facing JDT first is a huge challenge, and we need to be at our absolute best from day one. 'Momentum is everything.'

UK faces legal action over refusal to evacuate Gaza's critically ill children
LONDON — The British government is facing a legal challenge over its refusal to medically evacuate critically ill children from Gaza, a move campaigners say sharply contrasts with the UK's response in other global conflicts. According to The Guardian, the action was filed on behalf of three children in Gaza against both the Foreign Office and the Home Office. The legal complaint argues that ministers failed to adequately consider the desperate lack of medical care in the war-torn enclave before denying evacuation requests. The case also highlights what lawyers describe as a double standard, noting that the UK facilitated medical evacuations during the Bosnian war in the 1990s and amid the current conflict in Ukraine. Carolin Ott, a solicitor at the law firm Leigh Day, which is leading the legal challenge, said: 'The UK government has explained its failure to facilitate medical evacuations from Gaza on the basis that it supports treatment options in Gaza and the surrounding region and that there are visas available for privately funded medical treatment in the UK. However, these mechanisms are profoundly inadequate to meet the urgent needs of children in Gaza.' Campaigners are calling on the UK to establish a government-funded immigration pathway specifically for emergency medical evacuations. While two children from Gaza were admitted to the UK for urgent care in May through the charity Project Pure Hope, this remains the only such case to date—and it was entirely privately funded. The charity reportedly requested a Gaza-to-UK pathway funded by the British government, but the proposal was rejected. To date, the UK has not offered to serve as a receiving country for medical evacuations from Gaza. The legal filing asserts that continued inaction by British ministers is leaving critically ill Palestinian children without life-saving care. Neither the Foreign Office nor the Home Office has responded publicly to the legal action. — Agencies
