Whale watchers encounter 2 great white sharks off North Shore
Whale watchers got a big surprise when they encountered two great white sharks in the water off the North Shore of Massachusetts on Wednesday. 7 Seas Whale Watch said in a Facebook post that its vessel was heading out to sea when a naturalist onboard spotted a fin in the water about 10 miles north of Gloucester. 'We could tell it was either a great white or a short-finned mako - both of which are rare - but needed a better look to positively identify the animal,' 7 Seas wrote in the post. 'When the shark swam into a smooth patch of water near our boat, it became clear it was a white shark!' A second great white then approached and started swimming in circles with the other shark at the surface as everyone on the boat looked on in awe, according to 7 Seas. See photos of the sharks: 'We have only seen this species a handful of times in the 42 years we have been in business,' the post stated. There have been several other recent sightings of sharks off Cape Cod and Nantucket as well, according to the Chatham-based Atlantic White Shark Conservancy's Sharktivity app. The Sharktivity app, which is available to download on iPhone and Android, tracks sightings fed by researchers, safety officials, and users who upload photos for confirmation. Report: Celtics trading Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta as part of 3-team deal
One day after the Celtics traded Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trailblazers, Boston is reportedly continuing its tear down of their championship core by sending Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team deal. Boston, Atlanta and Brooklyn are finalizing a three-team trade that sends Kristaps Porzingis and a second-round pick to the Hawks, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The Celtics will receive Lawrence native Georges Niang and a second-round pick in return. Niang, 32, averaged 9.9 points per game in 79 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks last year. Advertisement The Nets will receive Terance Mann and Atlanta's No. 22 pick for their part in the deal. Porzingis arrived in Boston via trade prior to the 2024 NBA season. The Latvian big man significantly raised Boston's ceiling every time he stepped on the court but struggled to remain healthy, most recently dealing with a respiratory illness that severely limited him in the final stretch of the regular season and playoffs. The center was in the final year of his contract and was due $30 million in 2026. The move shifts the Celtics under the second apron and will significantly lighten their luxury tax burden. Boston Celtics make major trade ahead of NBA Draft
Jrue Holiday's acquisition from Portland helped spark the Boston Celtics to their NBA-record 18th championship last season. Holiday is being sent back to the Trail Blazers by a Boston team that could now be in transition, a person with knowledge of the details said early Tuesday. Advertisement ESPN reported that the Celtics would get Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks from the Trail Blazers. The departure of Holiday, who made his sixth career All-Defensive team selection in his first season in Boston, was confirmed to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal is not yet official. Holiday was traded by the Milwaukee Bucks to Portland in September 2023 when the Bucks acquired perennial All-Star Damian Lillard. Holiday was then dealt days later to the Celtics, moving right into the starting lineup and eventually earning his second career title last June. But the Celtics have now lost a second member of that starting lineup for at least part of next season, with All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum having surgery after an Achilles tendon injury in the loss to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Advertisement Simons could provide some of the scoring punch the Celtics have lost, having averaged 19.3 points last season after going for a career-best 22.6 per game in 2023-24. But the Celtics will miss the defense and leadership that Holiday provided. The two-time Olympic gold medalist's scoring was down though, with the 11.1 points he averaged last season his lowest since his rookie season in 2009-10, and more than eight points lower than the 19.3 he put up in 2022-23 with the Bucks, when he was an All-Star. More than that, the Celtics were likely motivated to trade Holiday because of the $104.4 million owed to him over the remaining three seasons of the contract extension they gave him last year, on top of the huge deals for Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Holiday, who helped the Bucks win the 2021 NBA title, has averaged 15.8 points in a 16-year career that also includes stints with Philadelphia and New Orleans. Karen Read's retrial: Judge declines to answer 4th jury question, calls it ‘theoretical'
The judge in Karen Read's murder retrial on Tuesday afternoon declined to answer a fourth question from the jury, deeming it 'theoretical,' shortly after ruling on an additional three questions about evidence and a verdict slip. When the court returned from its afternoon lunch break, Cannone announced that jurors had a fourth question: 'If we find not guilty on two charges but can't agree on one charge, is it a hung jury on all three charges or just one charge?' Cannone informed the court that she would respond to the jury and tell them that the question is 'theoretical' and not something she can answer. 'To me, it's a theoretical question, and we don't answer theoretical questions. I tell the jurors that they're not to be concerned with the consequences of their verdict, and that's exactly what they're doing here,' Cannone explained. Read attorney Alan Jackson urged Cannone to offer clarity in a quick note to the jury, emphatically stating, 'We're going to end up in the exact same position we were in last year.' Last year, the jury sent three notes to the judge over three days before a mistrial was declared due to a hung jury. Several jurors later came out to say that the panel had unanimously agreed that Read was not guilty of the most serious charge of second-degree murder. Cannone called the question 'premature,' noting that it 'may be something later.' Special prosecutor Hank Brennan endorsed Cannone's ruling. Earlier in the day, Cannone ruled on the following three questions: What is the timeframe for the OUI charge, 12:45 a.m. or 5 a.m.? Are video clips of Karen Read evidence, and how do we consider them? Does convicting guilty on a sub-charge convict on the overall charge? (In reference to the manslaughter OUI charge) Read, 45, of Mansfield, is accused of striking John O'Keefe, 46, with her Lexus SUV and leaving him to die alone in a blizzard outside of a house party in Canton at the home of fellow officer Brian Albert on Jan. 29, 2022, following a night of drinking. Throughout her second trial, the prosecution's theory of jaded love turned deadly was countered by a defense claim that a cast of tight-knit Boston area law enforcement killed a fellow police officer. Read's lawyers argued that O'Keefe was beaten, bitten by a dog, then left outside Albert's home in a conspiracy orchestrated by the police that included planting evidence against Read.
