Spring nor'easter coming to Mass.: Latest timeline for arrival, impacts

A spring nor'easter will sweep across New England on Thursday ahead of Memorial Day weekend, bringing torrential rain, strong wind gusts, and possible flooding to Massachusetts. The Boston 25 Weather team issued a WEATHER ALERT for Thursday due to the storm's expected impacts. LATEST STORM TIMELINE Showers will develop Wednesday night ahead of the more organized system. Steady rain will fall during the Thursday morning commute, but downpours will peak midday through the afternoon hours. 'If you're a morning commuter, 5 a.m. is not a bad time to be on the roads. We will have steady rain out there, but it won't be torrential yet,' Boston 25 Meteorologist Shiri Spear said in her latest forecast. 'That develops during the morning, so by lunchtime we're in the thick of it. The afternoon is going to feature scattered downpours.' Patchy rain will linger into Friday morning. 'As we travel through the overnight hours into Friday, lot of that heavy, steady rain is going to lift into northern New England,' Spear said. 'We're just left with some patchy tends to dry out Friday into Saturday.' THREATS WE'RE WATCHING 1-3 inches of rain Wind gusts up to 50 mph Areas of coastal flooding EXPECTED RAINFALL TOTALS Rainfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 3 inches. The heaviest rain is likely across eastern Massachusetts, including Boston. Central and western Massachusetts is in for about 2 inches of rain. Northern new England, including New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont will see about an inch of rain. STRONG WIND Wind gusts will ramp up as well on Thursday, also peaking in the afternoon. Gusts up to 50 mph are possible along the coast and Cape Cod. Gusts of 30-45 mph are expected in other parts of the region. There is a risk of wind damage and power outages, as with any powerful storm. FLOODING THREAT Pockets of splash over and minor coastal flooding will develop late Thursday afternoon and evening along the coast ahead of the 8 p.m. high tide. Waves of 5 to 10 feet in height are expected, along with a 2-foot storm surge. Beach erosion is only expected to be minor. EARLY SPRING FEEL Highs on Thursday will be in the 40s and low 50s. 'It's going to feel like late March, early April,' Spear said. Temps will climb into the lower 60s in some areas this weekend. 'It's really running almost 10 degrees below average this weekend,' Spear noted. Memorial Day is shaping up to be partly cloudy with temperatures climbing back near 70 degrees. Weekend winter storm to bring snow, dangerous icy conditions to Massachusetts

Another weekend winter storm is approaching which will bring snow, and dangerous icy conditions to Massachusetts. Snow is expected to begin falling Saturday evening, between 5-8 p.m., moving in from the west. 'The steady stuff doesn't begin until we get towards the later hours in the evening, closer to 10 to 11 p.m.,' the Boston 25 Weather team wrote in their latest weather blog. A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect Saturday night and lasts through Sunday night for most of Massachusetts (excluding the Cape and Islands). 'The worst of the travel will be early Sunday morning with snow, ice, and rain,' said Boston 25 Meteorologist Vicki Graf in her Saturday morning forecast. Estimates show the possibility of 1-3 inches of snow for the Cape and Islands and 3-6 inches for points south of the Massachusetts Turnpike and along the coast. Six to nine or more inches of snow is possible for points north of Interstate 90, including Fitchburg and southern New Hampshire. 'As the storm winds down, there's still a lingering threat for icy spots,' Graf said. When it comes to ice, some areas will see about a quarter of an inch which can be really disruptive. 'We're looking at a lot of those tree limbs and branches starting to sag or break, we're looking at some slick travel out there and also potentially power outages,' Graf added. On Monday, the winds will pick up significantly and a high wind watch has been issued for the day with gusts possibly reaching up to 60 mph which could lead to power outages. Winter storm threatening snow, icy conditions across Massachusetts

It may be Valentine's Day, but southern New England is not feeling the love from Mother Nature this weekend as a winter storm threatens to bring snowy and icy conditions across the region. 'Snow is expected to begin falling Saturday evening, between 5-8 p.m., moving in from west to east. The snow will continue into early Sunday morning,' the Boston 25 Weather team wrote in their latest weather blog. Estimates show the possibility of 1-3 inches of snow for the Cape and Islands, 3-6 inches for points south of the Massachusetts Turnpike and along the coast. Six to nine inches of snow is possible for points north of Interstate 90, including Fitchburg and southern New Hampshire. Temperatures are projected to slowly warm overnight into Sunday, causing a change to rain in Boston and southeastern Massachusetts. However, if the current forecast holds, ice may be a 'big problem' for towns to the north and west, according to the Weather Team. 'There will be snow out there. There will be some sleet and freezing rain. And keep in mind, it's the ice that's dangerous and creates that dangerous travel. And we could be dealing with that for several hours throughout the afternoon on Sunday and then eventually switching over to rain for parts of eastern Massachusetts into Sunday night,' Boston 25 Meteorologist Vicki Graf said in her latest forecast. 'Watch out for some slippery travel, especially Sunday!' Graf writes. For the latest on the forecast, stay tuned to the Boston 25 Weather page. This is a developing story. New snow map: A messy storm is headed to Mass. See the latest timeline, expected snowfall totals

Massachusetts is in for a 'parade of storms,' starting with some snow on Tuesday night followed by a more impactful storm that could cause a 'sloppy mess' for the Thursday morning drive to school and work. The first disturbance the Boston 25 Weather team is tracking is an ocean storm on Tuesday night that will track south of New England. While most of Massachusetts will stay dry, the South Coast, Cape Cod, and the Islands could see some snow. In her Tuesday morning weather blog, meteorologist Shiri Spear said the South Coast and Cape Cod may see a coating of snow, while Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard have the best chance for a coating to 1 inch of snow. 'You have to be really far south to have that chance for anything sticking,' Spear said in her latest forecast. Another storm will pass through soon after, with snow developing between 10 p.m. Wednesday and midnight Thursday. The snow is expected to fall for a few hours before a flip to a wintry mix of sleet, rain, and freezing rain come Thursday morning. 'We've got a few hours of snow and then it flips to rain and freezing rain, probably by 6 or 7 o'clock in the morning,' Spear said. 'The snow accumulation we get overnight is going to be turning to slush. It also means we get a chance for some slippery travel.' The Boston 25 Weather Team issued a WEATHER ALERT for Thursday morning due to the chance for slippery and icy travel conditions. A snow map shared Tuesday by Spear showed the possibility for 2-5 inches of snow for some points to the north and west, while eastern and southeastern Massachusetts could see 1-3 inches of snow. The Cape and the Islands are expected to have no more than 1 inch of snow. The storm will clear out by the afternoon. The weekend will then bring another chance for unsettled weather. 'Valentine's Day is going to be cold and dry, but keep your eyes on the weekend for another storm!' the Boston 25 Weather team wrote in their blog. Boston 25 Chief Meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz said Monday that it appears the 'parade of storms' will continue beyond the seven-day forecast into the extended winter weather outlook. ‘Parade of storms' in forecast for Mass. including ‘sloppy mess' for a morning commute this week

Massachusetts could be in for a 'parade of storms' starting with multiple chances for snow this week and a 'sloppy mess' for one morning commute. More than half a foot of snow fell in many communities over the weekend, but keep those shovels handy! More is on the way. 'There are at least three storms in the next seven days to watch,' Boston 25 News Chief Meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz said in Monday evening forecast. 'Not all are going to hit us, but we're going to watch them.' The first disturbance the Boston 25 Weather team is tracking is an ocean storm on Tuesday night that will track south of New England. While most of Massachusetts will stay dry, the South Coast, Cape Cod, and the Islands could see a dusting of snow, according to Lemanowicz. Another storm packing 'business' will pass through soon after, with snow developing around midnight on Wednesday and falling for a few hours before a flip to a wintry mix of sleet, rain, and freezing rain in time for the Thursday morning drive to work and school, Lemanowicz said in his forecast. Lemanowicz issued a WEATHER ALERT for Thursday morning due to the chance for slippery and icy travel conditions. 'A good push of snow on the front edge of this,' Lemanowicz said. 'During the morning drive, there's likely going to be snow, sleet, and rain all falling at the same even some freezing rain.' Lemanowicz said the storm will be a 'problem for commuting' and a 'tough call for schools.' A preliminary snow map showed the possibility for 3-5 inches of snow for points to the north and west, while eastern and southeastern Massachusetts could see 1-3 inches of snow. The storm will clear out by the afternoon. The weekend will then bring another chance for unsettled weather. 'Valentine's Day is going to be cold and dry, but keep your eyes on the weekend for another storm!' Lemanowicz wrote in his latest weather blog. Lemanowicz also noted that it appears the 'parade of storms' will continue beyond the seven-day forecast into the extended winter weather outlook.
