Can you guess who's Mass. governor this week?

Someone's sitting in for Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey this week. With one budget signature under her belt and a supplemental budget now before the Legislature, the Arlington Democrat headed out of town on vacation with her family, according to State House News Service. And that means Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll is minding the store as acting governor—with all the power that comes with it — until Healey returns, the wire service reported. And that's just a part of the constitutional order of things. Driscoll, a former Salem mayor, steps in when Healey isn't available. When neither Driscoll nor Healey is on the ground in the Bay State, duties devolve to Secretary of State William L. Galvin, who's next in line in the Bay State's foundational document. That last happened in February, when Healey was in Washington, D.C., for a conclave with her fellow governors, and Driscoll was similarly out of town. So what can Driscoll do while Healey's on vacation? Quite a bit. Driscoll will also be responsible for emergency response and serving as the state's liaison on federal matters. Because it's not like nothing is going on there. Under the state's constitution, the acting governor can file and sign bills, Though she's on holiday, Healey has nonetheless felt very present on this first full Monday in July. Earlier in the day, Healey was quoted at length in a scathing press release taking the Trump White House to task for freezing $108 million in previously approved money for public education. An hour or so later, one of Healey's Republican rivals for governor in 2026, former Baker administration aide Mike Kennealy, took her to task for remarks she made over the weekend on WBZ-TV's 'Keller @Large' program. Healey's last public event was on Friday, July 4, when she attended the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on the Charles River Esplanade, according to State House News Service. That same day, Healey ran her signature across a $60.9 billion annual budget for the new fiscal year that started July 1. Healey trimmed $130 million from the spending plan as a hedge against funding reductions from the Republican-authored domestic policy mega-bill. She also filed a supplemental budget that, among other things, would give her more leeway to unilaterally cut state spending. Ideal conditions for the Fourth of July, and, finally, the first completely dry weekend since March

Quick look Friday You can't ask for a better Fourth of July weather-wise. Thursday's storms brought dry air into the region with a light northwesterly flow and sinking high pressure. Bright blue skies with highs in the low 80s, can't go wrong with that. Advertisement As far as the night goes, the sky will remain mostly clear but might lean a touch on the cool side with lows slipping into the upper 50s. For folks going to catch the fireworks, in Boston or elsewhere, you might want to bring a long-sleeve shirt or light sweater. The setup — dry air, sunny skies, calm wind on 'three-peat' The setup for Friday is rather simple — healthy high pressure funneling across the entire region. Sure, there may be a few lingering showers way up in Presque Isle, Maine, but it'll be nothing but sunshine and good times from Central Maine and south through the Long Island Sound. High pressure will take over the region on Friday, setting up mostly sunny skies across much of New England. Boston Globe The holiday begins with morning temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s, slowly climbing to the low 80s by the afternoon. The air will feel light and crisp as dew points drop to the low to mid-50s. Advertisement Highs on Friday will be in the low to mid-80s across Southern New England with the mid to upper 70s farther north. Boston Globe Fireworks Forecast The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on Friday night has a clue about the weather in the title: spectacular. Expect mostly clear to completely clear skies with light winds. Temperatures will be in the low 70s during the fireworks. If you're headed somewhere else before calling it a night, the 60s might come into play. Weekend breakdown — sunny, dry, building heat The Fourth of July celebration continues into the weekend, with Saturday setting up to be a great day. There will likely be a few more clouds with an uptick in moisture from a southwest flow. But skies will remain partly sunny as a cool start to the morning builds to an afternoon full of 80-degree or warmer readings, thanks to the July sunshine. Dew points will also stay comfortable for a great day. Temperatures across New England on Saturday. Boston Globe Temperatures across Southern New England on Saturday. Boston Globe Sunday will see a bit more variety in the sky and air. It'll stay dry across the region, but the pocket of high pressure will be positioned well to our south, pumping more humidity into the region and sending dew points into the 60s. With more moisture in the air, the sunlight from partly sunny skies will push temperatures into the 90s across much of Southern New England. Highs on Sunday in New England will break 90 degrees for some. Boston Globe Highs across Southern New England on Sunday. Boston Globe Friday through Sunday breakdown Greater Boston: Loads of sunshine for the three days. Building heat starting with highs in the low 80s on Friday, then breaking 90 on Sunday. Cool at night Friday with lows in the 50s, but dew points start to creep back up on Sunday, keeping temperatures elevated. Temperatures will reach the upper 70s and low 80s on Friday, then the low 80s on Saturday, and possibly the mid to upper 80s on Sunday. The farther inland you live, the warmer it'll be Sunday. Advertisement Central/Western Mass.: Mostly sunny to completely sunny over the next three days. Some clouds on Saturday, but few and far between. Worcester to Springfield will see three-day highs of 80-83, 84-88, and then 92-96 degrees on Sunday. The Berkshires will run about 5 to 7 degrees cooler, with temperatures in the mid-70s on Friday. Specialized units and canines will be around the site, while the marine unit and air wing will patrol from the water and the air. Like in Ted Docks, of FBI Boston, said his office is not tracking specific threats in response to recent 'However, we must remain vigilant and mindful of the significance of this holiday,' he said. 'Boston will continue to be a symbolic target due to our many patriotic and historical landmarks.' 'Everyone here has tried to strike the right balance between an appropriate security posture and the ability for everyone to have a fun day,' Docks said. Officials encouraged visitors to report any suspicious activity. When people speak up, it decreases the chance of mass acts of violence, Docks said. 'We want you to be vigilant — but not fearful,' he said. Officials are also urging people to take advantage of public transit. Transit Police Chief Kenneth Green said alcohol consumption while on the MBTA 'will not be tolerated.' Kwon said to 'leave the fireworks to the professionals,' given that Massachusetts law prohibits the possession, use, and sale of fireworks without a permit and certification. Officials encouraged visitors to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and keep track of personal belongings. 'Really try to tank up. Pregame a bit with water,' said James Hooley, the Chief of Boston Emergency Medial Services.
