Red Sox Trade Scenario Would Cut Ties With Alex Bregman in Deal With Mets
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
The Boston Red Sox are 1 1/2 games out of a wild card entering play on Tuesday. With a little over a month until the trade deadline, could they consider becoming sellers?
The Red Sox will have many attractive pieces should they decide to sell at the trade deadline. Alex Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the team in the offseason, but he has an opt-out after the season. ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan suggested he could be traded to the New York Mets.
The Mets have been without Mark Vientos, who is currently on a rehab assignment. He was hitting .230 before his injury, but was starting to heat up. In his last 18 games, he had a .254 average with a .704 OPS. He will likley slot back in as the team's everyday third baseman, but adding Bregman could make Vientos the designated hitter.

Maddie Malhotra/BostonVientos could be an upgrade at DH over the Mets' current options, and the move would be well worth it to add Bregman's bat to the lineup. The Red Sox could lose Bregman in free agency if he opts out. Bregman was slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs before his injury.
He was having a career year at the plate, so it's not wild to think he will opt out and look for a better deal on the market. If the Red Sox start to fall out of contention, trading Bregman to a contender could set them up for the future and allow them to make Marcelo Mayer the everyday third baseman.
