Hootie & The Blowfish Returns To The Hot 100 For The First Time In Almost Three Decades
Hootie & the Blowfish return to the Hot 100 for the first time in nearly 30 years with "Bottle ... More Rockets," the band's collaboration with Scotty McCreery. (Photo by) Getty Images For a brief period in the mid-1990s, Hootie & the Blowfish was one of the biggest musical acts on the planet. The group hit it big with its debut album Cracked Rear View , which produced the band's three biggest hits on the Hot 100. The rock outfit had a hard time following that effort, and after breaking up for a period, Hootie & the Blowfish eventually reunited, at least for the occasional release. This week, the band returns to the Hot 100 with its first new hit in decades. Hootie & the Blowfish debuts on the Hot 100 this frame with "Bottle Rockets" alongside country musician Scotty McCreery, who leads the tune. The joint single opens at No. 80 after originally finding success on Billboard's country rankings. Hootie & the Blowfish earns its seventh career win on the Hot 100 and its first in almost 30 years. The last time the band launched a track on the tally, which ranks the most popular songs in the country, was back in July 1996, when "Tucker's Town" spent 20 weeks on the ranking and peaked at No. 38. Included in Hootie & the Blowfish's seven successes are three top 10 hits. The band peaked at No. 6 with "Only Wanna Be with You" in October 1995, and earlier that year pushed "Let Her Cry" and "Hold My Hand" into the loftiest region as well. As it arrives on the Hot 100, "Bottle Rockets" also enters the Digital Song Sales chart. The single opens at No. 14 with just under 2,100 pure purchases, according to Luminate. "Bottle Rocket" soars on three of Billboard's country-specific tallies, reaching a new high point on all of them at the same time just a little over a month into its lifetime on the rosters. The track shoots to No. 3 on the Country Digital Song Sales tally, No. 20 on the Country Airplay list, and No. 26 on the consumption-based Hot Country Songs ranking. Scotty McCreery's Return to the Hot 100 Former American Idol winner McCreery snags his eleventh Hot 100 win alongside Hootie & the Blowfish. It hasn't been long since he last appeared on the list, as "It Matters to Her" debuted in April 2023 and peaked at No. 49 that summer.

Hootie & The Blowfish Chart Higher Than Ever On Several Billboard Lists
Hootie & the Blowfish return to Billboard's country charts with Scotty McCreery collaboration ... More 'Bottle Rockets,' hitting new peaks on multiple lists at the same time. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - SEPTEMBER 20: Darius Rucker, Mark Bryan, Jim Sonefeld, and Dean Felber of Hootie & the Blowfish perform onstage during the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Festival at T-Mobile Arena on September 20, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by) Getty Images Three decades ago, Hootie & the Blowfish helped reshape the sound of rock music on American radio. The band introduced its signature blend of heartland rock, alternative influences, and even touches of grunge, pushing a different kind of sound into the mainstream with hits like 'Hold My Hand,' 'Let Her Cry,' and 'Time.' The group's time at the top was relatively brief, and for many years, the band remained quiet as frontman Darius Rucker pursued a hugely successful solo career in country music. Now, the rockers are back on the charts, blending styles and scoring a new win in the process. This week, the former Best New Artist Grammy winners are enjoying a new era of success thanks to a collaboration with a country favorite. Hootie & the Blowfish recently joined American Idol winner Scotty McCreery on his single 'Bottle Rockets,' which has now spent several weeks gaining traction in the country genre. The tune rises to new peak positions on both the Country Digital Song Sales and Country Airplay charts this time around, ascending to Nos. 9 and 24, respectively. 'Bottle Rockets' now marks a new all-time high for Hootie & the Blowfish on both of those rankings. Previously, the band had peaked at No. 30 on the Country Airplay chart with its own 'Hold On,' which debuted in that spot in October 2019. That same cut nearly cracked the top 10 on the Country Digital Song Sales list, but instead managed just a single week at No. 11 in fall 2019. The team-up between Hootie & the Blowfish and McCreery also debuts on the Hot Country Songs chart, the multi-metric tally that blends sales, streams, and radio airplay. The collaborative effort launches at No. 47 — a solid start, though not a new peak for either Hootie & the Blowfish or McCreery.

Hootie & The Blowfish Is Back On The Charts With An Unlikely New Hit
Scotty McCreery's "Bottle Rockets," featuring Hootie & the Blowfish, debuts at No. 30 on Billboard's ... More Country Airplay chart and samples the band's 1994 hit. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - NOVEMBER 04: Darius Rucker of Hootie & the Blowfish performs onstage during Hootie & the Blowfish at The Troubadour on November 04, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo byfor Hootie & the Blowfish) Hootie & the Blowfish changed the sound of alternative rock decades ago and ruled the airwaves for a time. The band produced some of the biggest hits of the mid-'90s, and its album Cracked Rear View — which has already moved more than 20 million units in the United States alone — was not only inescapable, it remains one of the bestselling releases of all time in the country. While the group is usually associated with one popular subgenre of rock, it's on the country charts where the outfit returns this week. Scotty McCreery recruited Hootie & the Blowfish for his new single, which debuts on one Billboard tally this week. "Bottle Rockets" opens at No. 30 on the Country Airplay chart. It instantly becomes a top 40 win on one of the most competitive radio rankings in America, as the airwaves still make or break tracks in that genre. Despite the fact that the band is almost always connected with rock and rock alone, Hootie & the Blowfish has reached the Country Airplay chart before. The outfit sent its own cut "Hold On" to No. 30 back in 2019. Coincidentally, the group has only landed a pair of wins on the country list, and both have peaked in the same position — at least so far. "Bottle Rockets" doesn't just feature Hootie & the Blowfish — it samples one of the band's biggest singles. The tune interpolates "Hold My Hand," which the rockers turned into a proper smash back in 1994. That cut, the group's debut release, helped break the musicians and make them a household name, and now they've earned another placement on a ranking few could have predicted it would ever reach. Of course, while Hootie & the Blowfish doesn't have a long history on the Country Airplay chart, lead singer Darius Rucker is familiar with the ranking. After splitting up the band — at least for a time — he pursued a solo career in that genre. He has thus far earned 23 appearances on the tally, with nearly half of them — nine tunes — entering the top 10. Nine of those have run the show for a time. McCreery, meanwhile, scores his eighteenth hit on the Country Airplay chart. Exactly half of those have broken into the top 10, and he's nabbed himself five No. 1s. The former American Idol winner is promoting an upcoming album, which seems to be fronted by 'Bottle Rockets.'
