Joy for Feane as Vera's Secret makes all at Leopardstown

Vera's Secret retained her unbeaten record around Leopardstown and registered her second Group 3 success when making all to take Thursday night's Xin Gin Irish EBF Brownstown Stakes. Ridden by Seamus Heffernan, the six-year-old mare bounced from the stalls, made the running pressed by Colin Keane on Chantez and, having shaken off that rival approaching the furlong-pole, stayed on to hold the flying late surge of Dance Night Annday by a neck. 'It's lovely to win another Group 3 with her,' said Johnny Feane. 'She likes it around here and has an entry in the Matron back here in September. I must talk to the owners, but that would be the dream. 'She did a lot of running out there. Chantez pressed her and they went a good pace. Seamie said she was idling in front and knows where the winning-post is. She's a lightly-raced mare and getting more professional all the time.' Slieve Binnian is bound for Ballybrit, for the Colm Quinn BMW Galway Mile, following his victory in the €100,000 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Nasrullah Handicap, completing back-to-back premier handicap victories. Formerly trained by the now retired Michael Halford and winner of the Dubai Duty Free Derby Festival Handicap last time, the Luke McAteer-ridden five-year-old mastered favourite Mississippi River before holding Booyea by a length and three-quarters. 'That's brilliant,' declared delighted trainer David Marnane. 'He's such an uncomplicated horse and is in the form of his life. I though he won snug enough in the Curragh and it's not often you win two €100,000 handicaps one after another. 'He idled in front the last day, so we rode him to come home and Luke gave him a great ride. And it was a good bit of placing by Ed (his brother). We thought this was his trip and Galway should suit him — he has gate speed, stays well and handles an ease in the ground. So that's where he's heading next.' The Paddy Twomey-trained Phenomenal Filly put her experience to good use when making all under Billy Lee to take the opening two-year-old fillies' maiden at the expense of debutantes Thenandnow and Amelia Earhart. Lee was able to boss things from the front and brought his mount home a length and a quarter in front, prompting Twomey to comment: 'She was very green at the Curragh and came forward well. She's a nice filly and gets the (Goffs) bonus tonight, which is great. She's in the Lowther, but she qualifies for the Goffs Million and that would look a good fit for her.' Twomey, Lee, and Bond Thoroughbred Limited were denied a double when odds-on favourite Bonus Time, bought for £320,000 out of Cromwell's after her Curragh maiden success, attempted to make all in the Boylesports 'Pick Your Place' 3-Y-0 Handicap but was collared late by Andy Oliver's Sounds Like A Plan and Chris Hayes. 'He's a fast horse and the race went to plan — Chris gave him a lovely ride,' commented Oliver. 'His Naas run was a bit of a puzzle — maybe he bounced. But we knew he was in fair shape coming here. And this opens plenty of options for him.' Hotpot of the night A Piece Of Heaven (2-5 favourite), off the track for 284 days, came unstuck in the finale, the Hurling For Cancer Research On 18th August (Amateur) Race, finishing a well-beaten third behind Henry de Bromhead's all-the-way scorer Gentleman Joe, whose rider John Gleeson commented: 'It was very straight-forward. He's a grand, honest horse and enjoyed being in front.'

Kimmage ex-cinema with residential development potential seeks €3m

The sale of Apollo House, a large mixed-use property on Sundrive Road in Kimmage, Dublin 12, is expected to attract interest from both investors and developers. Developed in 2002 on the site of the former Apollo Cinema, the building is being presented to the market by agent JLL as an investment with significant asset-management and redevelopment potential at a guide price of €3 million. Apollo House occupies a high-profile position in a long-established residential area. The property is positioned directly across from the entrance to Sundrive Shopping Centre and sits within a short walk of a number of shops, cafes and Eamonn Ceannt Park. The property comprises a four-storey over-basement building, extending to 17,826 sq ft (1,656 sq m), with 13 basement car-parking spaces. The entire ground floor is let to two established tenants, namely Boylesports Bookmakers Ltd and EuroLee Discount Store. These tenants are generating a combined passing rent of €130,000 per annum. READ MORE The Boylesport lease has an expiry date of April 5th, 2027, while the EuroLee lease is set to expire on April 30th, 2027. Floors one and two of the building come with vacant possession, while the third floor features a large penthouse apartment, which is occupied at present by one of the private investors involved in the building's ownership group. The apartment will be vacated once the sale of Apollo House is agreed. Apollo House sits on Sundrive Road in Kimmage Reddy Architecture + Urbanism has produced two feasibility studies outlining the property's redevelopment potential. These propose the addition of two storeys to the existing property to create a six-storey over-basement building accommodating either 24 residential apartments or 50 student-accommodation bedrooms. Both proposals fall under the site's Z4 zoning, the aim of which is 'to provide for and improve mixed-service facilities' as per the Dublin City Development Plan 2022–2028. Ollie Lyons of JLL says: 'This is a prime asset in a well-established Dublin city suburb, offering both short-term income and significant upside through refurbishment or redevelopment. 'We expect strong interest from investors seeking yield with growth potential, as well as developers targeting residential or student-accommodation schemes.'

Competition regulator to seek High Court ruling on Boylesports evidence

Competition regulators are seeking a ruling from the High Court dealing with evidence seized from bookie Boylesports in an investigation of the Republic's gambling businesses. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) recently raided the offices of Boylesports, Paddy Power owner Flutter Entertainment and Ladbrokes, among others, seeking evidence for an ongoing investigation into possible price fixing. The commission filed High Court proceedings against Boylesports Enterprise Unlimited Company on Thursday, court records show. 'The case relates to a statutory process initiated by the CCPC under section 33 of the Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2014,' the regulator confirmed. READ MORE 'This is a procedural matter related to a criminal investigation under our competition law powers. No further comment can be made at this point.' Boylesports did not comment. No date has been set for the hearing. Section 33 of the act bars the commission from taking legally privileged material in an investigation. It must apply to the High Court to decide if information it has acquired is privileged. The commission has taken similar proceedings involving other betting businesses that it is investigating, including Flutter Entertainment and Ladbrokes. Owned by its founder, businessman John Boyle, and run by chief executive Vlad Kaltenieks, Boylesports is one of the top three players in the Irish market. It has a significant British business. CCPC officials and members of An Garda Síochána raided bookies' premises in the Republic in May as part of its ongoing investigation into breaches of competition law. The commission has not commented beyond saying that the raids took place and confirming subsequent High Court proceedings involving three firms. Competition legislation gives the commission significant powers to investigate and gather evidence on suspected breaches of the law, including price fixing. Its latest move against the bookies comes as their business faces the prospect of a new licensing and regulatory regime in the Republic following the passing of a new law last year. The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland will police the licensing system, which will apply to betting shops and casinos as well as online businesses. It will be an offence to operate here without such a permit. Most companies in the industry say the new system is welcome, as it provides certainty and modernises laws that long predate digital betting. Boylesports this week announced plans to open 200 new betting shops across the UK and a sponsorship deal with English Premier League side West Ham United .

Irish entrant Emmy odds-on to qualify for Eurovision final

Ireland's Eurovision hopeful Emmy is 10/11 to qualify for the final of Eurovision, according to bookmakers. Emmy takes part in the second semi-final with her song, Laika Party, along with the Czech Republic, Finland and Malta, among others. Austria is the favourite to top the table in the semi-final. Ireland finished sixth in the final last year with Bambie Thug and their song Doomsday Blue. Ladbrokes spokesman, Cal Gildart said: 'Ireland are being backed by patriotic punters to reach successive Eurovision finals. 'Emmy's song is proving popular domestically so hopefully it can translate to the Eurovision stage.' Elsewhere, Boylesports say Emmy is an odds-on shot at 8/11 to get through Thursday's second semi-final. Ireland shares top position in the Eurovision charts alongside Sweden with seven victories apiece. But the latest odds from Boylesports make the Swedes 5/4 favourites to top this year's leaderboard. Lawrence Lyons of BoyleSports, said: 'Sweden are all the rage this year so while Ireland boasts an impressive Eurovision legacy, there could be a key change coming at the top of the all-time records.' The likes of Austria (9/4), France (9/1) and Israel (12/1) are being backed to give Swedish group KAJ a run for their money in Basel. But the chances of Emmy's Laika Party sparking celebrations for those waving the Irish tricolour are rated unlikely at odds of 66/1.
