'Delighted' to win but Kettlewell wants improvements

Kilmarnock manager Stuart Kettlewell says his side must improve despite securing a narrow League Cup win over Livingston on own-goal from Mo Sylla on 31 minutes was the difference between the teams, but Livingston could have taken something back to West Lothian were it not for several outstanding saves from Killie goalkeeper Max has now won both of his competitive outings as Kilmarnock boss, but he said they conceded too many chances and were "slack" in possession. "That's what we came here for," Kettlewell told BBC Scotland. "We're trying to top the group."It's about us trying to become better and I think we can play a lot better. We gave up too many opportunities and at times we were very slack on the ball."We had our goalie to thank with one or two stops and we need to test them a wee bit more. That all sounds negative - I'm delighted with the win and another clean sheet."Killie captain Brad Lyons came off with an injury in the second half, but Kettlewell downplayed any fears over the Northern Irishman's fitness."I'm hoping it's nothing too serious. He definitely tightened up."

Lyons 'natural choice' for Killie captain, says Kettlewell

Brad Lyons was the "natural choice" for Killie captain says manager Stuart Kettlewell. The 28-year-old has been at Rugby Park since 2021 and signed an extension in April 2024, committing him to the side until 2026. Kettlewell, who replaced Derek McInnes as manager this summer, has chosen centre-back Robbie Deas to deputise the midfielder. "It was a difficult decision in many ways because we've got so many good players here," Kettlewell told club media, external."Just in terms of their character and their nature, they're a really good bunch of boys. That's the first thing that I caught a glimpse of when I came in."Brad is somebody that has worn the armband before, he's got great experience at international level and also in the Premiership. He's a brilliant type, seems to be available for training sessions, for games, so that was the natural choice. "Robbie comes in and we believe he's somebody who can back Brad up, another good player, again somebody who is available. But we'll look for loads of leadership. the likes of David Watson, Rory McKenzie, there's so many boys in there that will support these guys."The decision has been met with full respect as you would imagine."

Kilmarnock 'deserve' Premiership place, says Lyons

Kilmarnock midfielder Brad Lyons insists the Ayrshire club deserve their place in the Premiership as they prepare for a bottom-six relegation battle in the season club finishing below the top six has a chance of being pulled into a race to avoid demotion, with Derek McInnes looking for his side to recover from a bruising experience against champions-elect Celtic.A blistering first-half goal spree ended the contest as Brendan Rodgers' side ran out 5-1 winners."Kilmarnock is a big, massive club," Lyons told BBC Scotland."We deserve to stay in the Premiership, but we have to do that, and especially the last five games this season, we need to stick together. "No one's blaming anyone. We're a team. We do everything together. It's good team spirit, and we look after our job on the training pitch and then and on a Saturday."Goal difference could be significant with teams bunched so tightly in the table. And at one stage at Celtic Park it looked like an extremely damaging experience on that front, but a more stoic approach limited that."As a team, we need to be more organised," Lyons added."You need more than good players. You need a good team spirit, especially at these times. Fans will put pressure on you."There's a lot of learning, but it's done now. There's a big focus on the next five games. We want to win as many as possible, finish as high as possible."

'Only ourselves to blame'

Kilmarnock midfielder Brad Lyons says their weekend defeat to Aberdeen won't derail the positivity they had been building, adding they are still very much in the battle for a top six place. Killie lost 1-0 to the Dons on Saturday, an added time Oday Dabbagh goal making the difference in a scrappy encounter at Pittodrie. "That's what we said at half time, it's very scrappy and the game seemed to be like one goal will win it and we were wanting to get on to the end of that," Lyons reflected. "It's overall frustration, I don't think there was much in the game, it was scrappy the whole game but to lose it at the dying end, especially with a set piece we have only got ourselves to blame so it is very frustrating." The defeat followed back-to-back wins for Killie, who have now dropped to eighth in the Premiership. Such is the tightness of the table, while Derek McInnes' team are just four points off second bottom - they are also only three points behind sixth-placed St Mirren. Next up is a home date with Rangers on Wednesday night. "I don't remember the last time in a weekend that Celtic and Rangers both lost," Lyons added. "It's very frustrating but we are still in it, a couple of wins again and it gets us right up there for that top six spot. 'The last five or six games we have been playing really well , maybe not getting results, but playing well. "Both teams would say they could have got a lot more quality in to the game but what a way to bounce back, Rangers at home under the floodlights on Wednesday night, so we can't wait for it."
