Kitchen fire reported at Valley Mission in Staunton

STAUNTON – A grease fire interrupted operations at the Valley Mission in Staunton on July 15. Staunton fire and police personnel responded to the shelter, located at 1513 W. Beverley St., at about 9 a.m. Susan Richardson, executive director at the Mission, said she was "very grateful" the small kitchen fire didn't spread. Richardson said the fire was caused by overflow grease. The kitchen will remain operational, but Richardson said because they will have to clean up residue from fire extinguishers that were used to snuff the fire, lunch was being delivered. "We are ordering subs for lunch to address the lunch prep that was affected by the chemicals," Richardson said in an email the The News Leader. Normal operations were expected to resume following lunch, she said. VSP: Motorists exchange gunfire along I-64 in Waynesboro

Virginia State Police said a road rage incident on Interstate 64 resulted in two motorists opening fire on one another in Waynesboro. Police sent out a press release seeking the public's assistance concerning the July 9 incident. Just minutes after 5 p.m. on I-64 eastbound, a black Genesis sedan cut off a white truck, possibly a Toyota with large tires, near Exit 96 in Waynesboro. The two vehicles stopped in the travel lane, and the driver of the truck pulled a gun and fired at the other vehicle, police said. The driver of the Genesis returned gunfire. The truck drove away from the scene onto Exit 96. The driver of the truck in question was described as a man in his early to mid-30s, and police said he had light brown or reddish hair with a distinct jaw line. The driver of the sedan, who was not injured, remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said. The Waynesboro Commonwealth's Attorney's Office is being consulted. Charlottesville PD: 5 people shot, including children

Five people were shot the evening of July 4 in Charlottesville, police said. Shortly before 11:30 p.m., officers from the Charlottesville Police Department responded to a shooting report in the area of Orangedale Avenue, according to a press release. The first officers arrived at the scene within two minutes of being dispatched. Police found five people shot, including a 52-year-old woman, an 18-year-old woman, a 17-year-old boy, an 11-year-old boy, and a 10 year-old girl. Because of heavy foot and vehicle traffic, emergency medical units were initially unable to access the scene. Officers and medics worked together to take the victims on foot and in patrol vehicles, applying pressure to their wounds until additional rescue personnel arrived, the release said. The victims were stabilized. The CPD's Criminal Investigations Division and Forensics Unit responded and are investigating the shooting. Early evidence suggests multiple shooters were involved. Officers will be in the area on July 5 conducting a search for any additional evidence.
