League-leading Union set to take on last-place CF Montreal
(Photo credit: Kyle Ross-Imagn Images) It's a battle of first versus worst when the Philadelphia Union host CF Montreal on Wednesday in Chester, Pa. The Union (13-5-4, 43 points) head into the midweek matchup with the best record in MLS, moving atop the standings with a 2-0 win against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak, both losses coming on the road. 'Really happy with the result,' Philadelphia coach Bradley Carnell said after the match. 'I think it was a good bounce-back from the last couple of games, where we didn't quite show our true selves. 'We wanted to be a little more expressive, a little more of who we are and what we are. I think you saw that in abundance (Saturday). I'm really proud of the boys for their application and the way they went about their business.' Philadelphia has the second-best home record in the Eastern Conference at 7-1-3, with its 24 points earned as the hosts trailing only the Columbus Crew. Its lone loss on its own pitch came March 16 against Nashville -- the Union's second home match of the season. Homegrown midfielder Quinn Sullivan earned his team-leading eighth assist of the season on Bruno Damiani's insurance goal in the win against the Red Bulls. Just past the midpoint of the season, the 21-year-old is only three assists shy of matching his career high of 11 set last season. 'He does so much work for us off the ball, for him to get rewarded, I think it's just deserved,' Carnell said. The Union have been the stingiest team in MLS, conceding a league-low 21 goals. That will be a tough challenge for a Montreal squad that has struggled to score all season long. The Canadian side (3-13-6, 15 points) has managed just 19 goals through 22 matches, with nine of those coming from Prince Owusu. The German striker helped Montreal earn a 1-1 draw in its last outing, converting a penalty in the 83rd minute against Orlando City on Saturday. He's been on a roll over the past month, scoring five goals in his past five regular-season matches. 'We're creating more scoring chances lately, and I'm benefiting from that,' Owusu said. 'I know my role, and I'm very confident.' Though tied for last place in the overall standings, Montreal is 2-2-1 in its past five matches and will be looking to earn points in consecutive matches for only the second time this season. They last did so in mid-May, following up their first win of the season with a draw. Two of Montreal's three wins on the season have come on the road (2-7-3).

🚨 Columbus closes the gap after narrow win over Philadelphia
Matchday 20 of the 2025 MLS season will be wrapped up this evening with just two fixtures remaining on the docket to close out another intriguing weekend of action across the United States and Canada. Here is how it all went down in Columbus as the Crew clashed with the Philadelphia Union ahead of the upcoming late fixture in Los Angeles as the Vancouver Whitecaps lock horns with LAFC. Farsi's strike ends Philly's unbeaten run Scorers: Farsi 45+2' Advertisement Eastern Conference powerhouse Columbus Crew banked a massive home result tonight after a narrow 1-0 win over pack-leading Philadelphia Union. Across what was a dull yet dominant opening 45 minutes of action at Field, the Crew took a justifiable 1-0 lead on the stroke of halftime after Mo Farsi's marauding run to the back post was picked out by Lassi Lappalainen for the Algerian to slot past Andre Blake. Thanks to a severe weather delay, a running theme across competitive football this summer, play resumed in Columbus as Wilfried Nancy's men remained largely on the front foot after crossing the hour mark. Despite a few changes, including introducing teenage talents Cavan Sullivan and Sal Olivas, Philly headmaster Bradley Carnell could not rewrite the script and find an equalizer before the full-time whistle. Advertisement With that, the Crew ended the Union's 11-match unbeaten run, while also closing the gap to the Eastern Conference leaders to just three points. St. Louis City sack head coach Olof Mellberg after 15 games
St. Louis City have sacked head coach Olof Mellberg after just 15 games in charge, the club announced Tuesday evening. The Swede took the helm this past offseason after parting ways with Bradley Carnell, but the club's fortunes have not changed in the months since. St. Louis City have collected just 11 points in 15 games so far this season, scoring just eight goals in the process. 'The decision to part ways with Olof goes beyond just results," said Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. "We've analyzed the team's performance across a number of factors, including the need to execute against a style of play that led to the team's initial success and has been part of our DNA for four years. "As a club, we have certain standards we need to meet and believe a coaching change was necessary to improve our overall performance and return to a winning culture. Our fans deserve a better performing team, and we intend to give them one." Next up for 14th place St. Louis is an MLS showdown with San Jose Earthquakes. 📸 Dilip Vishwanat - 2025 Getty Images

MLS Preview: St. Louis City SC
St. Louis City SC's debut season in 2023 was the culmination of many, many years of 'close but no cigar,' 'better luck next time,' and 'you were THIS close' messages from the MLS brass. In 2007 the city was floated as a possible relocation place for Real Salt Lake in that owner's negotiations/threats to build a new stadium. An unsuccessful bid ensued in 2009, the MLS favoring other cities over St. Louis despite approved construction plans for a huge soccer complex. In 2014 there was ANOTHER bid tied to a dual-use stadium for the future club and the NFL Rams franchise. The Rams moved to Los Angeles in 2015, and everyone went back to the drawing board. Finally, after two years of negotiation, the club was officially granted a franchise in late 2019, with their inaugural season scheduled for 2022. Well, along came COVID, which slowed but did not halt the stadium construction. It did, however, push their season starter to 2023. And it was worth the wait. St. Louis City SC didn't just hit the ground running, they barely touched ground before taking flight. Under sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel and coach Bradley Carnell they played a furious, pressing style of dynamic, risk-reward soccer. It was brilliant and exciting. They broke four MLS records for an expansion team, and tied one other (see the Other Facts section for details) in 2023, cruising into the postseason having won the Western Conference. Unfortunately, they were crushed in the first round of the playoffs. City SC are the only female-majority owned team in the MLS. Carolyn Kindle, president of Enterprise Holders, and Jo Ann Taylor, also an Enterprise Holders executive (both are heirs to the Enterprise Rent-a-Car fortune) have the controlling stake. Jim Kavanaugh, CEO of World Wide Technology, is a minority partner. With two seasons under their belt, there's a short list to pick from. Indiana Vassilev (United States) – Midfielder Current record holder for most appearances (75). Roman Bürki (Switzerland) [DP] – Goalkeeper 2023 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year winner. Current team captain. João Klauss (Brazil) – Forward [DP] The club's first Designated Player. Scored the winning goal in their debut match against Austin FC. Top goal scorer for the club (15). Play home games at Energizer Park, capacity 22,423. They have vibrant and rowdy supporters, including: St. Louligans (the oldest supporter group, founded in 2010) St. Louis CITY Punks No Nap City Ultras (composed of parents and mostly young children) STL Santos (for Spanish speakers) Fleur de Noise (a drum corps providing percussion support to chants) Below are the records the team set in 2023 First expansion team to win all five opening games (inclusive of winning four opening games). Most wins by an expansion team (17). First expansion team to win their division in their debut season. Tied – Most goal scorers for an expansion team in their debut season (16) Though not recognized as a formal derby, given their regional proximity there's a rivalry between Sporting Kansas City. After the record-breaking 2023 campaign, 2024 was going to be an uphill battle. They once again started with five undefeated games; the rub was that four of them were draws. After that, the hill turned out to be a cliff, and the squad just couldn't scale it. Coach Carnell was fired on July 1. The team's record was a limp 8W – 13D – 13L for 37 points Finished in.12th place in the Western Conference; 24th overall A mighty, mighty collapse, to say the least St. Louis had a very busy mid-season transfer window during which they cleaned house, so this offseason has been relatively quiet. They have a new coach, Swede Olof Mellberg from IF Brommapojkarna, but only two new faces hit the roster, highlighted below: Timo Baumgartl (Germany) – Defender The 28-year old center back is the product of the Stuttgart academy, but hasn't seen much starting time since 2019 when he transferred to PSV. Conrad Wallem (Norway) – Midfielder He's on loan from Slavia Prague with an option to buy, so that means he should be eager to impress. He's apparently comfortable on the wing in an attack or defensive alignment.
