10-acre pond to treat water flowing into Jakkur Lake
BENGALURU: Under its Brand Bengaluru initiative, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has developed a 10-acre 'constructed wetland' (waste stabilisation pond) near the Jakkur lake in Byatrayanpura to treat waste water before it enters the main water body. As per officials, the site will treat about 7 million litres per day of waste water. 'The 163-acre lake, including the wetland, was in the Bangalore Development Authority's custody. In 2015, the lake was transferred to the BBMP. However, 30 acres of lake area were encroached and coconut palms were planted. The 30 acres were later reclaimed and fenced. As there was no wetland near the lake, a 10- acre artificial wetland was created and six months ago, work to remove the slush and deepen the wetland was taken up. The wetland will arrest the solid particles and reduce the potassium and nitrogen levels and increase the dissolved oxygen in the lake. The total project was completed with a Rs 5 crore budget,' said an official. The official also added that more plants will be added to the wetland in coming days to improve the water flowing into the main water body.

District administration to propose renaming Dakshina Kannada as Mangaluru
Meanwhile, Dayanand Kathalsar of Mangaluru District Tulu Movement Committee and former chairman of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy at a press briefing demanded the government to rename DK as Mangaluru district. He said that even in the Sangam literature, there is a mention of 'Tulunadu' and during Vijayanagara empire, Tulunadu was divided into 'Mangaluru Rajya' and 'Barkur Rajya'. "Though we are freed from the rule of the Portuguese and the British, names like 'South Canara' or the Dakshina Kannada given during their period are still used, which need to be changed," he said. KPCC general secretary Rakshit Shivaram said that when SM Krishna was the chief minister, he came up with the Brand Bengaluru concept similarly it is a time for 'Brand Mangaluru'. "We will soon meet the chief minister, DCM, the home minister and the district incharge minister and all the elected representatives and submit a memorandum. The present name is 'Dakshina Kannada' but we are not in the southern part of the state, instead we are in the Western part of the state. The highways, airport, port and the railway stations here are named after Mangaluru hence the district should also get the same name," he said.

Bengaluru to be divided into five municipal corporations under Greater Bengaluru Authority: Report
Bengaluru city is set to be reshaped and reorganized into five distinct municipal corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) for administrative purposes, officials have decided, according to a report by the Deccan Herald. The city is currently being operated by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which will no longer exist once the GBA is established in its entirety. The Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill proposes to expand the city's administrative boundaries by including adjoining villages, towns, and peri-urban areas within Bengaluru's official limits. (Representational Image)(AI-generated image created with ChatGPT) This development came out of a high-level meeting held at the Vidhana Soudha and led by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. The division into five entities is reportedly driven by considerations such as administrative efficiency, projected revenue growth, and alignment with existing assembly constituency boundaries, the report stated. The remaining parts of the city, likely labelled East, West, North, and South, will form the four other municipal units, covering the broader outskirts. Given the vast geographical expanse of constituencies like RR Nagar, Yeshwantpur, Mahadevapura, and KR Puram, some of these areas could be split between two different municipal corporations, the report said. Addressing the media, Shivakumar confirmed that the new administrative units would fall within BBMP's current boundaries. Rural areas, including panchayat regions, would gradually be incorporated in later stages. Civic polls will follow soon, he assured. This move follows the enactment of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, on April 24. This new law replaced the earlier BBMP Act and mandates the formation of a Greater Bengaluru Governance Authority within 120 days. It also allows for the creation of up to seven municipal corporations. The government aims to issue a draft plan outlining the boundaries and number of new corporations within the next few days. Bengaluru MLAs will be consulted, and state cabinet approval will be sought before the plan is finalized. After a 30-day period for public objections, the final notification is expected before the August 25 deadline set by the new law.

Uncertainty set to end? Draft of new apartment law in Karnataka nearly ready
Bengaluru: With thousands of apartment residents facing legal uncertainty over ownership, maintenance, and land rights, the Karnataka govt has confirmed that the long-pending draft of a new apartment act is nearly ready. The urban development department said the document — prepared in consultation with apartment associations, legal experts and stakeholders — will soon be sent to ministers for approval. Tushar Giri Nath, additional chief secretary of the department, said: "The draft is almost ready. We've had meetings, taken inputs from the law department and apartment owners. Final touches are being given before it is sent to the ministers. There's no deadline, but it is in its final stage." The proposed legislation is expected to replace the outdated Karnataka Apartment Ownership Act (KAOA), 1972. Apartment associations and homebuyers are now pushing the govt to introduce the bill in the monsoon session of the legislature and bring long-overdue clarity to flat owners' rights and responsibilities. Bengaluru: Tenders are being called for upgrading 19 BBMP hospitals at an estimated cost of Rs 413 crore under Brand Bengaluru initiative. A detailed project report (DPR) for the proposal is in its final stages, said a senior BBMP official. "Once implemented, BBMP hospitals will be equipped to provide emergency care, general medicine, basic surgeries, and dental services to the public," said the official. As per Indian Public Health Standards (2022), urban community health centres are mandated to provide such services. However, until now, they were unavailable at 26 BBMP hospitals. This is the first time the Palike's health department proposed such an upgrade, starting with 19 hospitals. In the first phase, structurally weak hospital buildings will be demolished and rebuilt. In the second phase, existing buildings will be modernised. The third will focus on enhancing lab infrastructure, increasing bed capacity and providing essential equipment for surgery and emergency care," added the official. Suralkar Vikas Kishore, special commissioner (health), BBMP, said, "This is an ambitious plan to provide quality healthcare services in BBMP hospitals. The DPR will be completed soon. Subsequent steps will follow thereafter."
