Rugby Premier League looks to revive the sport in India and worldwide through 7s format
Almost 150 years after the demise of Calcutta Football Club resulted in the creation of rugby's oldest international trophy, a new sevens league was launched this month with the aim of reviving the gladiatorial sport in India. The Rugby Premier League (RPL) has recruited top internationals from the World Sevens circuit to play alongside locals in six franchises under broadcast-friendly rule variations. Organisers not only want to lead a revival of local rugby to the extent that India one day qualifies for the Olympics, but they also believe they can help revolutionise the future of the game worldwide. 'Rugby in India is not so popular and not because it's not played – it's played in more than 250 districts in India and there's a lot of talent pool available – but because people have not seen it,' Satyam Trivedi, chief executive of co-organisers GMR Sports, said. 'It has not been commercialised, originally or globally. It is a very aspirational sport. In countries like the UK, Australia, New Zealand, it's a private-school sport, which is not how it is seen in India. Chennai Bulls back on top at RPL, win big against Delhi Redz
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 23 (ANI): The Chennai Bulls returned to the top of the points table after a comprehensive 24-7 win against the Delhi Redz, in Mumbai, at the Shahaji Raje Bhosale Sports Complex, during the inaugural edition of the Rugby Premier League (RPL), according to a press release from RPL. The Delhi Redz, who have had a recent uptick in their fortunes, started off the game in solid fashion. Strong and compact in defensive set-ups, and robust in attack, the Redz picked up the early lead through Matteo Graziano's try and Matias Osadczuk's corresponding conversion. However, the Bulls began to show glimpses of their old form again, as Vaafauese Maliko scored a couple of tries, to put his side in a slender 3-point lead at the half-time break. After the break, the Bulls decided to go through the gears, and Maliko completed a hat-trick of tries. Filipe Sauturaga backed him up with clinical conversion, to give the Bulls a 10-point lead. Haakon Oess then added five more to the tally, and had Sauturaga scoring his conversion too, which helped the Bulls register a big win and return to the top of the points table. In the other game, the Bengaluru Bravehearts brought the Hyderabad Heroes' winning streak to a halt, defeating them 26-21, in Mumbai, at the Shahaji Raje Bhosale Sports Complex, during Season 1 of the Rugby Premier League. The Bengaluru Bravehearts hit the ground running, and how. International stars Akuila Rokolisoa and Philip Wokorach were combining well together. While Rokolisoa added a try and a conversion, Wokorach scored a try, giving the Bravehearts a 12-0 lead. For the Heroes, Wolfram Hacker responded with a try and Manuel Moreno also converted his kick. However, before the half-time break Iowane Teba's try and Rokolisoa's kick further extended the Bravehearts' lead. The Heroes, who began the day at the top of the points table, stormed back into the contest with a flurry of points, courtesy Terio Tamani, who bagged two tries and one conversion. With four minutes left, the Heroes led 21-19. The Bravehearts though weren't giving up, and Pol Pla added five points to the mix, whilst Rokolisoa added two more, turn the contest on its head. That though was enough on the night for the Bravehearts, who snatched a crucial win. (ANI)

Chennai Bulls go top of table in RPL; Bengaluru Bravehearts win big against Kalinga Black Tigers
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] June 16 (ANI): Both the Chennai Bulls and Bengaluru Bravehearts had a superb day on the field, on a rainy Monday, as they registered comprehensive wins in their games during Season 1 of the Rugby Premier League (RPL), here at the Shahaji Raje Bhosale Sports Complex (Andheri Sports Complex). The Chennai Bulls, who have now won two out of two, are top of the table while the Bravehearts are second, with one win and a draw, a RPL release said. The Bengaluru Bravehearts were in superb form and stormed past the Kalinga Black Tigers, winning the game 35-10. However, it wasn't an easy start for the Bravehearts, as the Kalinga Black Tigers went ahead in the first quarter through Lucas Lacamp's try. After that, the Bravehearts cranked up the style and turned the game on its head as Philip Wokorach scored two tries, and the troika of Akuila Rokolisoa, Iowane Teba and Mohit Khatri added a try each as well. Whilst the Kalinga Black Tigers failed to convert any of their kicks, the Bravehearts were able to place theirs within the goal posts, to pick up an additional ten points. Philip Wokorach, Iowane Teba (three kicks), and Akuila Rokolisoa were the kick takers for the Bravehearts, who eventually won at a canter. The Bravehearts are now unbeaten in their opening two games, having drawn the first and won the second. In Match 2 on the day, the Chennai Bulls took on the Mumbai Dreamers and overcame the challenge with relative ease. The Bulls won comfortably with the score at 31-17. The Bulls were out of the blocks faster than their opponents, and pretty much kept the Mumbai Dreamers at arm's length. However, in the final quarter, the Dreamers dreamt of what could have been a comeback for the ages, before the Bulls nipped it in the bud with a fine counter-attack in the final minutes of the contest. For the Bulls, Vaafauese Maliko and Joseva Talacolo scored a couple of tries each, and Filipe Sauturaga added another. Joaquin Pellandini then had two chances to score his kicks, and Filipe Sauturaga added another couple of points to the tally. For the Dreamers, Waisea Nacuqu, James Turner and Briar Barron bagged a try each, and Waisea Nacuqu managed to register the only conversion on the night. Child grooming practices hiding in plain sight
Parents are being urged to learn the red flags that could indicate their child is being groomed. Grooming is one of the most insidious precursors to child sexual abuse as the manipulative practice targets parents and children. In Australia, more than one in three girls and almost one in five boys experience child sexual abuse. The stark reality is that 79 per cent of survivors knew their abuser, be it a relative, friend, acquaintance or neighbour. Survivor and advocate Amelia Ayris said there was not enough education about grooming for children or their parents. "Grooming can look harmless and be very harmful," she said. "It needs to be communicated to children and adults because it is so prevalent in child sexual abuse cases." The 19-year-old is now studying law and politics at university, hoping to one day work in family law. "I've seen what needs to change within the legal system and where it failed me and so many other young people," she said. Grooming is the calculated process perpetrators use to gain a child's trust, isolate them and ensure their silence, often happening in plain sight. But it's not just the child who is groomed. Parents, caregivers and other significant adults are also groomed by the perpetrator. Almost one in four Australians are not confident in identifying indicators of sexual abuse and only one in five feel confident talking to a child or parent about sexual abuse. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bravehearts (@braveheartsprotectkids) These statistics underscore the critical need for education, particularly in the area of grooming, Bravehearts CEO Alison Geale said. The leading child protection organisation has launched a national awareness campaign titled "grooming hides behind harmless" in a bid to expose the subtle behaviours of perpetrators. "This campaign is designed not from a vigilante perspective but it's rather about vigilance," Ms Geale told AAP. "We want parents to be educated through knowledge, not experience." The campaign was directed by award-winning actor, singer and writer Leah Purcell who got involved after learning close friends had been impacted by child sexual abuse. "There's too much silence around it, and people think it will never happen to them," she said. "The campaign is about giving people the tools they need to stop this happening." Bravehearts is encouraging all Australians, including parents, teachers, carers, neighbours, coaches and community members to get educated, stay alert and be willing to act. 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) National Sexual Abuse and Redress Support Service 1800 211 028 Lifeline 13 11 14 Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 (for people aged 5 to 25)
