Review: The Script proves no stage is needed for them at Cardiff Castle

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info There's always a risk in staging an outdoor concert in Wales or anywhere in the UK, where a downpour can often be more of a guarantee than a threat. But for The Script who played Cardiff Castle on Thursday, June 26, the light rain did little to dampen spirits. Judging by the crowd, no one seemed particularly interested in being anywhere else so the weather gods may actually have been working in their favour. The Irish band has always walked an unusual line of being a touch too earnest for some people and slightly too mainstream for others. But you know deep down that there's at least one of their songs that stick in your head (and you probably know it word for word as well). Tonight, they leaned into that unapologetically and it was definitely a 10/10 experience. We were treated to a set packed with hits lie Breakeven, For the First Time and The Man Who Can't Be Moved, reaffirming why these songs have lasted so well and seem so timeless. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here They played Six Degrees of Separation too which is one of my favourite songs ever and lands so well when played live. Frontman Danny O'Donoghue was in full charismatic form, shouting early on: 'Cardiff, I know we all love to sing up here,' and the audience proved him right immediately. A standout moment was when thousands of people sang along to The Man Who Can't Be Moved in the pouring rain. (Image: Bethany Gavaghan) Danny also invited a young girl named Maia onto the stage and guided her to press a key on the piano, letting her sit next to him at the piano and telling her he was dedicating a song to her. But the most surprising part of the evening came during Nothing as Danny left the stage entirely and walked deep into the crowd, singing as he moved. I felt slightly on edge for him (as did his security I'm sure), but it worked so well and the crowd was incredible, with no one I could see screaming or pushing forward at all - possibly because everyone was also just super stunned. I've always been slightly envious of people who got to experience the music scene in the 80s and 90s when artists seemed a bit more relaxed about security when crowd surfing or walking through the audience felt almost routine, so I definitely appreciated getting an insight into that world even if it was just for the night. The show hit its peak energy with Paint the Town Green. The mood switched quickly from nostalgic to celebratory. Addressing the crowd before singing Hall of fame, Danny said: 'The story's about making moments you take to your grave. So when you're standing in front of God, you can say: this is what I did.' Closing with the famous track, Danny framed it as a dedication to 'anyone going through something right now', and the Cardiff crowd knew every word. S With a heartfelt thank you to his Welsh fans and taking a bow with the rest of the band, the Irish singer even draped a Welsh flag around his shoulders which got some almighty cheers and whoops from the crowd, who it's safe to say loved every second of the gig. Irish acts to watch at Glastonbury 2025

The fields of Worthy Farm are calling once again as Glastonbury 2025 gets underway from 25 - 29 June, and there's no shortage of Irish talent making the pilgrimage to the world's most iconic music festival. From breakout stars to festival legends, here are the Irish acts flying the tricolour at this year's Glasto. CMAT - Pyramid Stage, Friday, 1:30pm Kicking off the Irish invasion in style is CMAT, who lands a prestigious early slot on the Pyramid Stage. The alt-pop powerhouse from Dublin has had a whirlwind year - viral hits, festival buzz, and sell-out shows - and now she's bringing her cowgirl chaos to the biggest stage of them all. Expect sequins, sass and singalongs. The Script - Pyramid Stage, Saturday, 3pm The Script return to Glastonbury with a feel-good Saturday afternoon set that's bound to be a crowd-pleaser. Their back catalogue is festival gold (Breakeven, The Man Who Can't Be Moved, Hall of Fame), and with frontman Danny O'Donoghue leading the charge, Irish fans are expected to turn out in force. Kneecap - West Holts Stage, Saturday, 4pm Love them or loathe them, there's no ignoring Kneecap. The Belfast hip-hop trio are making their Glastonbury debut with a fiercely anticipated West Holts set. Known for their bilingual bars, political bite, and unapologetic stage presence, this is guaranteed to be one of the most talked-about performances of the weekend. Inhaler - Other Stage, Friday, 2:15pm Dublin rockers Inhaler, fronted by Elijah Hewson (yes, Bono's son), are carving out their own path - and their Glastonbury return marks another big step. With a slick indie sound and two acclaimed albums behind them, they'll light up the Other Stage on Friday afternoon. Snow Patrol - Other Stage, Sunday, 6pm Festival veterans Snow Patrol bring the weekend full circle with a golden hour slot on Sunday evening. The Northern Irish band's biggest hits (Chasing Cars, Run, Open Your Eyes) are practically made for emotional sing-alongs under a pink Glasto sky. Sprints - Other Stage, Friday (TBC) If you like your live music raw and raucous, don't miss Sprints. The Dublin punk-rockers are building serious buzz with their gritty sound and fearless lyrics. Early signs suggest a Friday slot on the Other Stage - perfect for an explosive start to the weekend. Acoustic Stage Irish Highlights Away from the main madness, Irish music lovers will find plenty of homegrown soul on the Acoustic Stage. The Coronas return with their feel-good indie anthems while the Hothouse Flowers are set to bring decades of musical magic. Singer-songwriters Oisín Leech and Lorraine Nash will offer stripped-back, heartfelt sets - ideal for lazy summer afternoons on the grass.

Watch This ‘Amazing' 23-Year-Old New Orleans Street Performer Get a ‘Life-Changing' Golden Buzzer on 'America's Got Talent'

America's Got Talent has had some memorable singers over the years. And this season's Jourdan Blue is now among them, having made his mark as the second Golden Buzzer awarded for Season 20 of the talent competition. The 23-year-old from New Orleans is a street performer, which he says has given him a lot of cool experiences but is also a struggle. 'I go out and sing from 8 p.m. to 2 or 3 a.m., or until the cops kick me off the street,' he said in a video package. 'That is what I do to provide for my girlfriend and my son. It's hard, but I want to lead by example. I want to show my son [that] you should chase your dreams. I wasn't ready when I had him, but he's taught me there's a lot more to life than I realized.' 🎬 🎬 Jourdan's mother was a cop, and his father was an attorney, which led him to become a rebel. And when he was 16, he ended up on his own, moving from friend's house to friend's house, or sleeping in bathrooms where he worked. 'Until my grandpa found out,' Jourdan explained. 'He drove out there that night and picked me up and said, 'You stay with me now.' I've been with him ever since.' That relationship is so tight that Jourdan called his Grandpappy John before going on stage at AGT and handed the phone to host Terry Crews so that his grandfather could watch his performance. Related: Jourdan explained his living situation to judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara, saying his grandfather is a big music listener, which is where his inspiration came from. 'I started street performing in New Orleans because I totally wanted to dive into it,' he said, starting to get emotional. 'As you may remember, at the beginning of the year, there was an attack on New Orleans right on the block where I perform. It made me realize there is so much more to live for. That is what made me choose AGT. I feel this is the best way to level up.' Jourdan chose 'Breakeven' by The Script for his audition. Halfway through, the audience jumped up. And when he concluded, the judges gave him a standing ovation as well, with Simon flashig two thumbs up. 'I mean, I'm in love with you,' Sofia said. 'The hair, the voice, your energy, you're a rock star.' Mel B said, 'It was like I was hearing that song for the first time, which is really hard to do with such a popular song. But your tone and the way you delivered that song was not only pitch perfect but everything perfect, Jourdan. It really was.' Then Simon added, 'You are somebody who lost his way a little bit. But, as you said, through music have now found your way. You have such a distinctive voice, you are so cool, and you feed off the audience. They love you. How you made me feel just then was amazing. Seriously, amazing. Loved it. Loved it.' Then, Howie claimed Jourdan as his own. 'This is Season 20. I've seen dreams come true right where you're standing. Lives change right where you're standing. That stage and that moment can take you anywhere. This is just the beginning of where you can go. You, young man, are going to the Live Shows,' Howie said as he stood up to press the Golden Buzzer. The comic then joined Jourdan on stage, saying, 'I think you're a star. I think your name is going to be on the lips of everybody watching this across the globe.' They were also joined by Jourdan's girlfriend and cute-as-a-button son. America's Got Talent airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
