BBC star in major career change as the soap comes to an end after 20 years

It's a big change for the soap star. GO TIME BBC star in major career change as the soap comes to an end after 20 years Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RIVER City star Stephen Purdon is already planning for life after soap - after taking over his best pal Grado's radio show. The actor, who has played Bob O'Hara since the series launched in 2002, is joining The Go Radio Breakfast Show from Monday onwards. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 2 Zoe and Stephen are teaming up for Go Radio. 2 Stephen is replacing his best mate Grado. Credit: Tom Farmer Purdon, 42, will be joined by co-host Zoe Kelly on the station's Breakfast Show weekdays from 6am to 10am. He said: "I'm buzzing to be joining the Go Radio family. "I've been a Go Radio listener since the station launched and getting the chance to wake up Glasgow and the West with lots of laughs and chat is a dream come true.' Grado, 37, has hosted the programme alongside Zoe for the last few years but has quietly stepped aside as his friend replaces him on the airwaves. A source close to the Two Doors Down actor said: "It's lovely news that Grado's good mate has taken over the baton at Go Radio and he wishes him all the best." James Maguire, Programme Controller at Go Radio, added: 'From his role in River City to his annual Pavilion Theatre panto performances, Stephen is a natural entertainer with a genuine love for Glasgow and its people. "We're delighted to welcome him to the Go Radio Breakfast Show – it's going to bring a new dynamic to the show's existing winning formula of great chat, music, news and competitions.' We recently revealed that Grado hopes to make a ruthless return to River City - by killing his mate. The wrestler turned actor enjoyed a brief Shieldinch stint in 2014 when he joined the cast as a bonkers grappler named Buster. Grado, real name Graeme Stevely, said: 'My ideal storyline is for me to come back and kill Bob. Moment Grado brings back iconic character at Ayr races 'I would choke him to death in the wrestling ring in Shieldinch Town Hall. 'Can you imagine? The ratings would be so good if that happened that they'd maybe keep it going.' Buster was last seen heading for Las Vegas to pursue his professional wrestling dream. But while Grado's River City stint ended rather quickly, his friendship with Stephen has stayed strong. They barely knew one another when they met on set and have now spent years performing as one of Scotland's most popular panto duo's. The pair also host the hilarious Pint and Two Shots podcast alongside comedian Chris Toal.

Greg James is named as godfather of Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo's baby as he emerges victorious in Radio 1's Giant Face Off

Greg James has been named the godfather of Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo 's baby after emerging victorious in Radio 1's Giant Face Off. The latest challenge from Radio 1 saw Team Greg and Team Jamie tasked with deciphering a series of clues leading them to different areas of the country. Once a location had been determined, the race was on to collect a flag with each opponent's face on it - and most flags wins. After a tense few days of sending their teams as far afield as Barry, Derry and even the Shetland Islands, as well as a literal race to the finish in Newcastle, Greg emerged victorious with 10 flags to Jamie's nine. But the challenge came with consequences, with Jamie set to take over as host of Radio 1 Breakfast if he had won. However he lost, and the Made In Chelsea star's forfeit was that he had to name Greg as the godfather of the unborn baby he is due to welcome with wife Sophie. Hours before, Jamie had told Sophie live on air that godfather Greg was a possibility if he lost. Speaking on the show, he said: 'So I just got a message from Sophie my wife saying "How are you, just checking in". And i said before that I actually haven't mentioned the fact that you potentially could be godfather of my child so I thought I might tell her now. [Phone rings] I'm actually terrified...' After a few niceties, Jamie broke the news, saying: 'You know how I've been doing this sort of Giant Face Off with Greg all week where I need to win! Yes? He continued: 'Just quickly, I haven't told you this... I'm going to keep it very brief. There are forfeits at the end. Greg's is hilarious... I get to take over the Radio 1 Breakfast Show when I win. 'I have a forfeit as well. Um... just very blase... if I lose Greg becomes the godfather of our child.' After a period of silence, Sophie replied: '... Absolutely, wonderful' 'So you're happy for Greg to...,' Jamie began before Sophie added: 'Godfather Greg, I can't wait. It's got a ring' Hours before, Jamie had told Sophie live on air that godfather Greg was a possibility if he lost. Speaking on the show, he said: 'So I just got a message from Sophie my wife saying "How are you, just checking in" 'She seems fine with it?' Greg said tentatively, before Jamie added: 'Hmm, yeah I know Sophie very well. Once she's off air it will be a different conversation, I think.' 'Thanks honey I just want to let you know that I love you!' before Sophie jumped in with: 'Ahhh, make sure you win!' After saying 'I love you' twice with no response from Sophie, she hung up and the radio station erupted in laughter. Confirming Greg's win on Instagram on Friday, a clip showed him running down a bridge in Newcastle to collect his flag after the pair received their final clue from a band live on air. Arriving at the bridge, Greg was greeted by two flags attached to it with his and Jamie's face on them. He was then handed a pair of scissors to cut Jamie's flag down, leaving his remaining and thus winning the game. Sophie and Jamie, aged 36 and 30 respectively, announced earlier this year that they were expecting a baby together. But Sophie revealed on her and Jamie's newly named podcast NearlyParents, that she has struggled with some aspects of her pregnancy. She confessed that when her second trimester hit, she felt like she was 'dying' and was dealing with a lot of hormones that made her frequently feel irritated. 'This girl has gone from a bit of a b***h to don't come near me,' she quipped. 'Up until week eight, I was smooth sailing. No good aversions, no sickness, so much energy, I was like what is every talking about this is unbelievable. 'Week eight hit and everyone's starting to grate to me a bit. Like that man sat next to me on the plane breathing, like is it illegal if I punch him in the face? 'If you're a fan of the podcast, I love you so much but you're not going to like me if you meet me at the moment.' Jamie said he struggled to get his head around Sophie's mood changes with pregnancy, recalling: 'I asked Sophie if she had any cravings and she said, ''No, the only craving I have is hating you''.

Who will win Radio 1's Giant Face Off? - A Friday finale awaits Greg James and Jamie Laing

Update: Date: 17:43 BST Title: We're wrapping up coverage for the day Content: See you tomorrow at 7am for the big finale. Here's a round up of today's action The day started with a 'flag in a haystack' game on Tom the Young Farmer's farm. Dean McCullough (Team Greg) managed to win a flag for his side. "This victory feels sweet, with a hint of manure," he said. Here's Dean holding the tiny flag in triumph Listener Lily then secured another flag for Team Greg via a Cornish bakery. Everything was looking rosy for our Breakfast Show host. But the scores were narrowed again via Katie, who made her way to Happy Bottom Nature Reserve after clues were spotted via BBC Bristol Our DJs Charlie Hedges and Lauren Layfield were summoned to play a daft game involving eggs. They had to create contraptions that would protect an egg being thrown from the top of HMS Warrior. No idea why, but Lauren won the game with a very nice feat of engineering. Another win for Team Jamie. And after more shenanigans and flag-finding in the Shetland Islands, a showdown awaited our DJs in North Wales. First one down a 100mph zip wire would secure a flag - Team Greg knew they needed just one more flag to win the whole game. But it was the awesome Ore who won the North Wales race, zooming via zip wire to pick up a crucial flag for Team Jamie. This means the game will reach its summit tomorrow morning (Fri 25 July) in Newcastle. Update: Date: 17:36 BST Title: Greg and Jamie have been summoned to the North East Content: A new message from the mysterious studio phone You're at a 9-9 split. There's a big gap in the North East. The weather in Newcastle is looking pretty good tomorrow. Maybe check it out. Also, why don't you bring one of your teammates for you? Lots of love, phone. Update: Date: 17:29 BST Title: Get Involved Content: Can't believe it. Ore's already at the top?! Rachel in Birmingham I'm team Greg! I thought we had it in the bag! Jade in Hastings I think we all need to take a collective breath Sam MacGregor, Team Jamie For those wondering, Alyx still got to go on the zip wire Update: Date: 17:23 BST Title: "One of the best experiences of my life" Content: Our victor of the latest flag, Ore Olukoga, is buzzing to have won a crucial flag for Team Jamie. We don't have confirmation of this yet, but we think this means the game continues until Friday! Ore wins it for Team Jamie Update: Date: 17:19 BST Title: New flag for Team Jamie! Content: Via a 100mph zip wire Alyx (Team Greg) knew that if she got to the zip wire first, she would get the 10th - and final - flag for her side. The game would be over. But by the time she arrived on site, she spotted her rival Ore (Team Jamie) already by the flags. He'd already completed the zip wire! Much to Alyx's dismay. "I can't swear because I'm live on Radio 1, but..." It's 9-9. So this game is going right to the (zip) wire. Update: Date: 16:51 BST Title: Alyx Holcombe is speeding to the zip line Content: Can she bag the final flag team Greg needs? Our latest clue points to the zip wire in Penrhyn Quarry and we heard from Ore Olukoga who is running to get that flag for team Jamie, but Sam and Danni were struggling to get through to Alyx Holcombe who is repping team Greg. Luckily for Greg, we've just heard from Alyx who was struggling with patchy phone signal. She said she's just 20 minutes away from the zip wire but will she get there in time to bag the win for Greg? The whole game hinges on who gets this flag as Greg just needs one more to win the entire game. Danni pointed this out to Alyx for a bit of motivation, to which she replied: "It's quite a lot of pressure though isn't it Danni!" Update: Date: 16:33 BST Title: Ore's been briefed to get the next flag via a zip wire Content: Meanwhile, nobody can get hold of Alyx Holcombe on Team Greg Ore OlukogaTeam Jamie "Ok, I've never done a zip wire in my life. Oh my word." "I'm here to win. I can worry about my fear of heights a bit later." Update: Date: 16:20 BST Title: A new clue! Content: A new clue's popped up on Netflix's socials, tagging Greg and Jamie, external. It features a clip from comedy show I Think You Should Leave - a funny sketch in which Tim Robinson's character is in a Love Island-style villa, but only wants to use a zipwire. Netflix's caption reads: "are you only here for the zipline?" And subtitles on the clip are in Welsh. So we think this means our Wales-based presenters, Alyx and Ore, need to head to zip world in Penrhyn Quarry. A new clue posted by Netflix UK Update: Date: 16:15 BST Title: We have entered 5-a-side territory with the latest score Content: Next goal wins? Update: Date: 16:13 BST Title: New flag won for Team Greg! Content: One flag away from glory Listener Chloe moved quickly - she's at the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse in Shetland. Chloe was in the middle of baking a cake when she heard about Shetland's involvement in the Giant Face Off. She had two flags to choose from, as per. And she went for Team Greg! "I hope your cake is absolutely disgusting," joked Team Jamie rep Sam MacGregor. 9-8 to Greg Update: Date: 16:04 BST Title: To the lighthouse! Content: Shannon from Shetland (who has a Shetland pony called Aoife) is 15 minutes' drive from the lighthouse. She just picked her daughter up from childcare - she says she's going to head over and find out what all the fuss is about. Go on Shannon! Update: Date: 15:52 BST Title: It would take Sam MacGregor 22 hours to drive to the Shetland Islands Content: So he needs your help - text/WhatsApp 03700 100 100 Sam MacGregorRadio 1 DJ (Team Jamie) "If you live there, good for you, it looks beautiful. But do us a job please. We need you to find the flag on the lighthouse!" Update: Date: 15:41 BST Title: Here's what's at stake Content: Giant Face Off forfeits Greg JamesBBC Radio 1 Breakfast host If I win, I also get to become godfather of Jamie Laing's child. If he wins, I go back and do the Going Home show, like it's 2015. And Jamie has also promised to stop all the avenues of joy in my life. I'm quite worried about that, actually. Update: Date: 15:30 BST Title: It's 8-8 - all square Content: Matt EdmondsonRadio 1 presenter (Team Jamie) Two flags to win it, first to 10. It was looking bad for Jamie earlier, but it's looking up now. Is it going to get done today? It very well might do. Update: Date: 15:09 BST Title: Any listeners in Shetland? Content: We're 99% sure our latest clue is directing Teams Greg and Jamie to the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse. Text/WhatsApp 03700 100 100 to get in touch (full contact details here). Update: Date: 15:00 BST Title: We've passed the 3pm deadline for flags being 'stolen' by another team Content: So that's it, Greg has 8 flags, Jamie has 8. Any more flags won need to be new and previously undiscovered - no funny business. One is in North Wales, and now one appears to be on a lighthouse in the Shetland Islands. That's where those new cryptic coordinates are pointing to. We're hoping to hear from Ore Olukoga and Alyx Holcombe (pictured below next to team colours) soon to find out how their Wales ventures are going. Update: Date: 14:57 BST Title: A new clue: Where do these coordinates point to? Content: Radio 1's in-house studio phone just rang, and it's given us another clue. The latest message says: It's me, your best friend, the phone. We've only got 3 more flags to find. How about you try looking here.. 59.8543N 1.2746W Update: Date: 14:47 BST Title: We finally have visuals on the egg contraptions Content: The moment you've been waiting for We've been sent some pics of Charlie and Lauren's #egggate inventions. It very much looks like a low-budget episode of Taskmaster, and we're here for it. Lauren's was the winner. An engineering triumph. We hope she's kept hold of it. Update: Date: 14:24 BST Title: It's a flag win for Team Jamie! Content: The scores are level again This wasn't an easy flag to win. Our Portsmouth-based presenters were tasked with making egg vessels out of recyclable goods. The eggs, in their parcels, were to be be dropped on the floor from the top of the HMS Warrior, and the presenter with the most eggs still in fact wins a flag. Lauren (Team Jamie) attempted something daring, an engineering feat - a yoghurt pot attached to a plastic bag, with blown up rubber gloves underneath the pot. Charlie (Team Greg) went with coffee cup with lots of bubble wrap inside, resembling a handbag in design. But who won the game? Both receptacles landed relatively comfortably. An independent adjudicator declared this a win for Team Jamie. "As predicted, a hot air balloon would perform better than a handbag." Update: Date: 14:10 BST Title: What exactly is Radio 1's Giant Face Off? Content: We are three days in to a very chaotic, daft game on Radio 1. If you're new to the Giant Face Off, allow Greg James to explain... This video can not be played Greg James explains the rules for Radio 1's silly game of the summer.

BBC Radio 2's Zoe Ball declares 'warfare' on local 'gang' after ditching £2 million home

BBC Radio 2 star Zoe Ball, who switched to a townhouse in 2024, explained how she was in the grips of "warfare" with a local "gang" and was planning to take action at "dawn" Zoe Ball has shared her woes about a local "gang" after swapping her lavish £2 million countryside pad for a Brighton and Hove townhouse. In 2024, the BBC Radio 2 presenter bid farewell to her rural Sussex abode in Newick and set up shop in a townhouse, intriguingly right next door to her ex-husband, Norman Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim. ‌ The couple, who tied the knot in 1999 and had two children together, parted ways in 2016 and finalised their divorce in 2020. Since relocating, Zoe seems to taken to gardening but has run into quite the predicament. ‌ According to the Mail, she revealed that she's been locked in "warfare" with a "gang" of foxes, cats, and squirrels that have been making a mess in her garden. Zoe lamented: "I've got this gang of foxes, cats and squirrels that basically s*** in all the borders." ‌ Despite her efforts of using lemon, thyme, and mulch, the tactic backfired. She elaborated on her struggle: "The squirrels are now digging up their monkey nuts and the bulbs they nicked off me ... this is warfare." ‌ "I'm going to sit at dawn with a pop gun under a blanket aiming at them. They're bold. They come up to me like a little gang of s****y squirrels." A source previously told the publication that Zoe was seeking a "bit more lively" environment, having grown "fed up with life" in the quieter countryside. Zoe Ball's exit from the Radio 2 Breakfast Show in 2024, after a six-year stint, was a major talking point, with Scott Mills stepping into her shoes. ‌ Addressing why she quit, she cited that it was time to "step away" from the "very early mornings" and "focus on family." Fast-forward to this year, and Zoe has returned to BBC Radio 2 with a weekend show. Additionally, Zoe has opened up about battling "really bad social anxiety". She confessed that her role on the Breakfast Show had been a convenient excuse to avoid social gatherings that made her uneasy. While speaking on her new Dig It podcast, co-hosted by fellow radio star Jo Whiley, she explained that she was "always slightly in the back" of her head, attempting to think of an excuse of "not being able to go" and saying her previous job was a "great excuse". Without the Breakfast Show as a reason, Zoe says she can no longer plead the need for an early night. She further discussed her discomfort with social situations, particularly her aversion to small talk. Zoe admitted: "I am really bad at small talk. It makes my skin crawl. I have had to reverse myself out of conversations when I have said something so weird."

If there were any two radio icons we all wanted to join forces, Zoe Ball and Jo Whiley would be up there. Set to be their first official project together after over 30 years of parallel careers, the duo have teamed up for a fun, new venture. Launching their very own podcast called 'Dig It', it is now available to stream on all podcast platforms, or watch it in full on YouTube and Spotify from today (16 July). Sharing their news on the @digitpod Instagram page, the pair shared a video of them discussing the first episode and the topics they're set to cover.
