Done deal - former Colchester United midfielder Brendan Wiredu has joined League One side Plymouth Argyle (Image: STEVE BRADING) FORMER Colchester United midfielder Brendan Wiredu has signed for League One new boys Plymouth Argyle. The 25-year-old, who made 75 appearances for the U's across his two spells with the club, has signed a three-year deal with the Pilgrims after joining them from League Two side Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed fee. Advertisement Wiredu told the Plymouth Argyle website: 'I think every time I've played Plymouth, they've either been promoted or won the league – that speaks volumes in itself! I want to be part of a tough team to play against. 'I want to be pushing the upper end of the table. 'I know from what I've come here and seen, the fans are fully behind the football club.' Wiredu established himself as a popular player for Colchester, during his time in North Essex. Advertisement He impressed with his combative performances in the centre of midfield and picked up runners-up spot in Colchester's Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards, in 2021. Wiredu left Colchester in the summer of 2022 and joined Fleetwood for a six-figure undisclosed fee. Colchester's League Two game is selected for live Sky Sports coverage Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley told the club's website: 'Brendan is a great acquisition for us. 'He is strong, versatile and, as evidenced by the fact he was Fleetwood's captain, a leader. It is great to have him on board.' Argyle Head of Football Operations and former U's midfielder David Fox said: 'Brendan is a player we have kept a close eye on and he is a player who will really suit us as this moment in time. Plymouth Argyle have signed Fleetwood Town captain Brendan Wiredu for an undisclosed have not disclosed the length of the 25-year-old midfielder's contract at Home Park - he had 12 months left on his deal at the Cod scored seven goals in 123 games for Fleetwood after joining them from Colchester United three years ago. Wiredu comes into an Argyle side in need of midfielders - Adam Randell moved to Bristol City last month while Jordan Houghton rejected a new deal to join Stevenage.
