Surprising Georgia Bulldog named as preseason first-team All-American

The Georgia Bulldogs had just one player make the 2025 preseason Walter Camp All-America team. Walter Camp, which is the nation's oldest college football has just a first- and second-team. Surprisingly, Georgia punter Brett Thorson made the first-team. Thorson's inclusion is not shocking because of his level of skill, but because he is recovering from knee surgery after he suffered a knee injury (to his non-kicking leg) in Georgia's 2024 SEC championship win over Texas. "He (Brett Thorson) won't be ready at fall camp, but we think he'll be ready by the first game," said Kirby Smart back in April. Smart has not confirmed the exact injury Thorson suffered, but it is suspected he tore his ACL. If Thorson returns for the start of the 2025 college football season, then he will have returned to action in less than 10 months. If Thorson is unable to play, then sophomore Drew Miller, who played in Georgia's Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame, is expected to start. AP named Thorson as a second-team All-American for his excellent 2024 season. Last year, Thorson averaged 47. 6 yards per punt and pinned opponents inside the 20 yard line on 22 different occasions. He had a career-high 18 punts go over 50 yards. Thorson is expected to be part of an elite Georgia special teams unit in 2025. The Bulldogs return starting kicker Peyton Woodring and long snapper Beau Gardner. Woodring made 21 of 23 kicks in 2024 including nine of his 11 attempts over 40 yards.

Seven Georgia Bulldogs named as preseason All-Americans

The Georgia Bulldogs are expected to have several standout players this year. Sportswriter Phil Steele named seven Georgia players to his 2025 Preseason All-American teams, with each of the four teams featuring at least one Bulldog. Punter Brett Thorson and cornerback Daylen Everette made the first team. Linebacker CJ Allen and long snapper Beau Gardner earned spots on the second team. The third team included safety KJ Bolden and defensive tackle Christen Miller and kicker Peyton Woodring made the fourth team. Advertisement Thorson averaged 47.6 yards per punt, ranking seventh in the country. As a result, he was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award. Everette underwent a sports hernia surgery that sidelined him for the spring game, but he is expected to be fully healthy by the time the season starts. In 2024, he led all Georgia Bulldogs with three interceptions. Four players on Georgia's defense were selected, further highlighting the confidence media outlets like Steele and ESPN Greg McElroy have in Georgia's defense and coach Kirby Smart. Additionally, three UGA specialists made the team. The Dawgs should have an excellent special teams unit again in 2025. However, no players from Georgia's offense made any of the All-America teams. Georgia is transitioning from Carson Beck to either redshirt junior Gunner Stockton or redshirt freshman Ryan Puglisi at quarterback, while the Georgia running game aims to improve after finishing second to last in the SEC in rushing yards per game last season. ESPN's SP+ reveals post-spring ranking for Georgia football

The Georgia Bulldogs lost 13 players to the 2025 NFL draft and four more players went undrafted. UGA also lost 19 players via the transfer portal including starting quarterback Carson Beck and edge rusher Damon Wilson, who are both ranked among the country's best transfers. In total, 36 Georgia player left the program. Georgia's 2025 preseason expectations have a lot of variance due to the significant amount of roster turnover the Bulldogs experienced this offseason. Georgia is expected to start quarterback Gunner Stockton this fall. Stockton impressed at times during the SEC championship, against Notre Dame and in Georgia's spring game. He brings experience, humility and toughness to the Georgia quarterback room, but is not expected to be among the best passers in the country. Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton (14) runs on the field prior to the start of the Georgia Spring game at Sanford Stadium. Still, despite Georgia's uncertainty, ESPN's SP+ metric thinks the Bulldogs could be in for a big season. SP+, which factors in returning production, recent recruiting and recent history, ranks Georgia fourth in the country and second in the SEC behind Alabama. Advertisement SP+ ranks Georgia's special teams as the best in the country. The Dawgs return starting punter Brett Thorson (recovering from a torn ACL) and kicker Peyton Woodring. Both were All-SEC selections in 2024. SP+ ranks Georgia's offense as the eight-best offense in the country. It ranks Georgia's defense as the fourth-best defense in the nation. If Georgia has a top 10 unit on offense, defense and special teams this fall, then the Bulldogs will be national championship contenders. Georgia fans can expect to see a lot of new players on the Bulldogs in 2025, but SP+ has a lot of confidence in the new breed of Dawgs. Georgia faces an easy start to the 2025 college football season (home versus Marshall and then Austin Peay), so the Dawgs will have some time to adjust before they head on the road to play Tennessee in Week 3. ESPN projects 3 Georgia Bulldogs as All-Americans

True to form, Georgia was well-represented on ESPN's 'Way-Too-Early' All-American team projections. However, only punter Brett Thorson secured a coveted first-team selection. Following Brett Thorson's injury in the 2024 SEC championship, Drew Miller assumed punting duties, averaging 39.8 yards per attempt in the Notre Dame loss. Thorson, along with kicker Peyton Woodring and snapper Beau Gardner, will return to the Bulldogs in 2025 giving the Dawgs an elite special teams unit. Junior linebacker CJ Allen, who finished second on the team in tackles with 76, earned a spot on the All-American second team. With linebackers Smael Mondon and Jalon Walker departing for the NFL, Allen is poised for a leadership role in 2025, aiming to emulate the Butkus Award-winning linebackers who preceded him (Nakobe Dean, Roquan Smith, and Jalon Walker). Tight end Oscar Delp, who contributed four touchdowns in Georgia's final three regular season games, was named to the All-American second team. While his 2024 production was modest (21 catches, 248 yards), he and fellow tight end Lawson Luckie will be key targets for quarterback Gunner Stockton in the upcoming season. Five Bulldogs earned All-American honors in 2024, with only Thorson returning. This creates opportunities for emerging players like running back Nate Frazier and safety KJ Bolden to showcase their talents in the 2025 season and possibly reach All-American status.
