Chiefs free agency prediction adds former Lions All-Pro captain

The Kansas City Chiefs have kicked off training camp in their quest to bounce back after losing the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason. However, For the Win's Cory Woodroof doesn't believe the Chiefs are done on the player acquisition front. Woodroof predicts Kansas City will sign linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who was released by the Detroit Lions in February. "Reeves-Maybin is the exact kind of player smart teams add this time of year. He's still an impactful special teams player, and it'd be fun to see what Kansas City special teams coach Dave Toub could do with him," Woodroof wrote. Reeves-Maybin would be a solid depth option in the linebacker room for the Chiefs, but his real value comes on special teams. During his time with the Lions, Reeves-Maybin established himself as one of the best special teams players in the league. The 30-year-old earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors for his work in that aspect of the game in 2023, and has played over 300 special teams snaps in three different seasons. He only played 10 games in 2024 due to a neck injury and was a cap casualty by Detroit. Signing Reeves-Maybin to serve as a rotational player on defense and a key part of multiple special teams units would be a savvy move by general manager Brett Veach. The 2017 fourth-round pick should be incredibly cheap to sign, and Kansas City still has $19.8 million in cap space. Any serious contender would love to have Reeves-Maybin on their roster. The Chiefs are a potential landing spot, but we'll see where the Tennessee product lands for the 2025 campaign. Chiefs open training camp focused on Super Bowl redemption following humbling loss to Philadelphia

Andy Reid addressed his players before training camp, emphasizing urgency to the reigning AFC champions. Patrick Mahomes, however, felt no need to reiterate this message, especially after their Super Bowl loss to the Eagles. 'I think enough was spoken after that game,' the two-time MVP quarterback said. 'But I think when you go back to OTAs and back to minicamp and stuff like that, the guys had that mindset. You could tell by the pep in their step and just in the little talks that guys have throughout the team. I don't think anything really needs to be said when you get beat like that. Everybody knows,' Mahomes said, 'that we've got to be better.' This reflects the high expectations in Kansas City. Despite finishing 15-2, tied with the Lions for the best NFL record, and winning their ninth consecutive AFC West title, the Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia stung. The Eagles led 7-0 after the first quarter, extended their lead to 24-0 by halftime, and won 40-22, avenging their previous loss to Mahomes and Co. 'Obviously, we didn't play the way we wanted to play on a national stage, a worldwide stage,' said Mahomes, who was sacked six times and threw two interceptions. 'You want to go out there and be better.' Chiefs general manager Brett Veach spent the offseason addressing these shortcomings. He signed Jaylon Moore and drafted Josh Simmons to protect Mahomes, added Kristian Fulton to the cornerback position, brought in Jerry Tillery to improve the pass rush, and signed Elijah Mitchell to support Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt. Veach also extended contracts for Trey Smith (four-year, $94 million deal) and George Karlaftis (four-year, $93 million extension). Cornerback Trent McDuffie may be next for a significant contract. Every season Karlaftis and McDuffie have played in the NFL has ended in the Super Bowl, resulting in two rings. However, the Super Bowl loss has overshadowed these successes. 'We wanted to finish better,' Karlaftis said. 'We just want to finish our season better.' The work toward that goal began amid heat and humidity at Missouri Western State University. 'The Super Bowl loss kind of helps you out on some of those extra workouts that you don't want to do or some of the different stuff in order to get better for next season and kind of keeps that in your mind,' Mahomes said. 'Now we're here. We're here to start over. How can I get better for my teammates? How can I get better for the guys beside me? And then go out there and attack so that we can find a way to win that last game and not lose it.'

Chiefs, Defensive End George Karlaftis Agree to 4-Year, $93 Million Contract

The Kansas City Chiefs and defensive end George Karlaftis have agreed to a four-year, $93 million contract that includes $62 million guaranteed, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal, which locks up one of the Chiefs' best young defensive players on the same day that they report to training camp at Missouri Western, is still pending a physical. It is the second high-profile contract that Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has finished off in the past week. He signed Pro Bowl right guard Trey Smith to a four-year, $94 million extension on Tuesday. Karlaftis, a first-round pick in 2022, has started 44 of his 49 regular-season games for the Chiefs. His best season came two years ago, when he had 10.5 sacks while starting every game. He had 8.0 sacks in 16 games last season. Karlaftis has appeared in the Super Bowl every season, winning the first two and losing to Philadelphia in February. Reporting by The Associated Press.
