How ‘corn sweat' can make a hot summer day even worse
(NEXSTAR) — Forget the dog days of summer — it's corn sweat season. Through the end of July, the National Weather Service has warned that a large stretch of the country — from Louisiana to Minnesota and eastward — is expected to experience 'dangerous, prolonged heat' coupled with humid weather. For those in the Midwest and across the Corn Belt, the high humidity can be attributed in part to the plethora of corn (and other crops) growing in the region. As Ellen Bacca, chief meteorologist at Nexstar's WOOD, explains, corn and crops 'sweat' just like humans when they become hot. Unlike humans, plants bring water from their roots and release it into the air in a process known as evapotranspiration. Have this giant, noxious weed in your yard? How to get rid of it — without burning yourself Estimates from the U.S. Geological Survey say that a single acre of corn can release 3,000 to 4,000 gallons of water vapor daily. As Nexstar's WGN previously reported, in Illinois alone, the National Weather Service said a mature corn crop is capable of producing more than 35 billion gallons of water vapor in a day. That would be enough to fill over 52,500 Olympic-size swimming pools. Iowa and other areas known for growing large expanses of corn can frequently be the most humid locations in the country. That was true Tuesday: data from the National Weather Service shows dew points in the upper 70s across Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Only Florida and the southern portions of the Gulf states had higher early afternoon dew points. The corn sweat effect has grown from a hyper-local event to a more expansive situation due to climate change, according to Brian James, chief meteorologist with the Nexstar Weather Center said Tuesday. 'The increased humidity caused by very large corn fields is a phenomenon that has become even more amplified due to climate change,' he explained. 'A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture. That means as the summer heat builds and temperatures rise across the Corn Belt, the increased humidity is leading to heat index values above 110 degrees over a much larger area than what used to occur.' The latest temperature outlook from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center shows that, across the Lower 48, only California and parts of Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan and the Northeast are likely to see below-average temperatures during the final week of July. All other parts of the country — especially areas from the southern Plains, across the Gulf Coast and into the southern Ohio Valley — have a higher chance of seeing above-normal temperatures. Any corn sweat that increases humidity will, of course, only last a few more months.

July 4th forecast map: Will you have clear skies for fireworks?
(NEXSTAR) – People in some areas of the U.S. may want to stock up on their own sparklers, Roman candles and fountains, because the weather may put a damper on July Fourth fireworks displays. 'Some parts of the United States are going to have to deal with Mother Nature's fireworks, and the manmade ones may get a little bit of a washout,' said Chief Meteorologist Brian James with the Nexstar Weather Center. The central part of the United States and down toward the Southeast have the greatest chance of rain and thunderstorms, according to James. The Dakotas, western parts of Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas all have suboptimal forecasts for Independence Day. Heat will also be a factor for a number of cities with highs expected to reach 95 degrees Fahrenheit in Chicago, 93 in Louisville, 104 in Phoenix and 102 in Las Vegas. So where are clear skies in the forecast? Green in the map below indicates areas with the best forecast for fireworks viewing: With the Fourth of July falling on a Friday, experts at auto club AAA are expecting a record-setting 72.2 million Americans to take a domestic trip over the long weekend, packing the nation's highways, rails and airports. As for road trips, AAA is forecasting that a record 61.6 million people will travel by car – a 2.2% increase, or 1.3 million additional travelers, over last year. According to transportation data provider Inrix, July 2 and July 6 are expected to be the busiest driving days. AAA projects that the Fourth of July week will also see a record 5.84 million air travelers over the Independence Day week, a 1.4% jump from last year's record of 5.76 million. The Transportation Security Administration says it is prepared for the holiday rush at the nation's airports, but warns air travelers that they should expect the busiest day to be Sunday, July 6, when passenger volume is forecast to reach 2.9 million.

Obituary: Brian James, musician
Brian James of The Damned performs on stage at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith, London, October 29, 2022. Punk made Brian James famous but the Londoner was no one chord wonder. Kicked out of school at 15, playing guitar was all that the then Brian Robertson could do (he changed his name to avoid being confused with Thin Lizzy's guitarist). He started out playing blues and jazz before discovering proto punks The Stooges and helped found a heavily influenced band called Bastard. After that outfit's demise James finally got his timing right, joining a band called The Damned and playing on what is regarded as the first punk single, New Rose. The band, briefly, split in 1978 (James did not rejoin when The Damned reformed, although he did play two shows with them in 1988 and at various reunions thereafter). In 1980, James formed the Lords of the New Church with the former Dead Boys vocalist Stiv Bators, a group which enjoyed modest success on the indie charts, and then The Dripping Lips. In 2000, under the name Racketeers, he and Clem Burke (Blondie), Stewart Copeland (the Police), Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses) and Wayne Kramer (MC5) released an album. James also released five solo records. Brian James died on March 6 aged 74. — APL/agencies
