Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 21 - Brian Scalabrine (2001-05)
The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the "New Jersey Americans". Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today. To commemorate the players who played for the Nets over the decades wearing those 52 different jersey numbers, Nets Wire is covering the entire history of the franchise's jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. The 22nd of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 21, which has has had a total of 26 players wear the number in the history of the team. The second of those players wearing No. 21 played in the (then) New Jersey (now, Brooklyn) Nets era, big man alum Brian Scalabrine. After ending his college career at USC, Scalabrine was picked up with the 35th overall selection of the 2001 NBA Draft by the Nets. The Long Beach, California native would play the first four seasons of his pro career with New Jersey before he would sign with the Boston Celtics in 2005. During his time suiting up for the Nets, Scalabrine wore only jersey No. 21 and put up 3.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.

Boston Celtics alum, broadcaster Brian Scalabrine added to national NBC, Peacock coverage
Former Boston Celtics big man and current Boston broadcaster Brian Scalabrine has been added to NBC Sports and Peacock coverage team for national NBA broadcasts, per recent reporting from the Boston Globe's Chad Finn. But fret not, the champion Celtics center is not abandoning Boston to go national. He will still be on the call with broadcast partner Drew Carter, save for a handful of contests each season. "There might be minor overlaps here and there where I have a national assignment on the night of a Celtics game, but NBC is going to do their best not to affect much if anything locally," said Scalabrine via Finn, who noted that fellow Celtics alum and broadcaster Eddie House would likely fill on one at least some of those dates. "From my understanding, that's what it looks like," added Scal. "I would never leave for ESPN, but the fact that it's NBC is a massive, massive plus for me. I have a lot of respect for the way that NBC Sports Boston treats me, and I'm loving the stuff that they're talking about doing at the big network, so I'm just really excited about the whole opportunity." "A better fit and he makes half the money" - Scalabrine says replacing MPJ with Cam Johnson puts the Nuggets back in title contention
"A better fit and he makes half the money" - Scalabrine says replacing MPJ with Cam Johnson puts the Nuggets back in title contention originally appeared on Basketball Network. The Denver Nuggets' first move in the 2025 NBA free agency period was to trade starting forward Michael Porter Jr. and an unprotected 2032 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for Cameron Johnson. Advertisement While Johnson is not an All-Star or All-NBA player who can move the needle for the Nuggets, SiriusXM NBA Radio's Brian Scalabrine thinks the move involving him and Porter Jr. could be a game-changer for the 2023 NBA champions. "I think Cameron Johnson's a better fit and he makes half the money," said Scal. "All it cost him was a 2032 unprotected pick. If they're still good in 2032, which who knows what 2032 looks like, they might pay the price for that. But in the meantime, that's a championship roster right there, and they have a little bit of flexibility because their number is 185, which they're underneath all those aprons. So they'll have some room to do things." Same player at half the price Once projected to be a No.1 overall pick, Porter Jr. slipped in the 2018 NBA Draft due to concerns about his back injury in college. The Nuggets took a gamble on him at No.14, and after Michael sat out his rookie season to rehabilitate, he emerged as a starter and played a key role in Denver's 2023 title run. MPJ has career averages of 16.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game with shooting splits of .500/.406/.795. Advertisement Meanwhile, Johnson was the 11th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He began his career with the Phoenix Suns but was traded to the Nets along with Mikal Bridges and draft picks for Kevin Durant in 2023. Cam has career averages of 12.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game with shooting splits of .453/.392/.851. However, he is coming off his best season ever at 18.8 points, 4.3 boards, and 3.4 dimes per night. Given that MPJ averaged 18.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game this past season, both produced almost the exact numbers for their respective teams. Their games are also very similar, making this trade nearly lateral from a basketball point of view. Financially, however, Porter Jr. costs twice as much as Johnson, and that's where Scalabrine thinks this is a home run for Denver. Related: Pippen once missed a layup to prevent MJ from getting a triple-double in the 1997 Finals: "I didn't want him to tie me" Denver gets much-needed flexibility The Nuggets went from owing Porter Jr. $79.1 million in the next two seasons to paying Johnson $43 million over the same period. Not only is that an outright $36.1 million savings for Denver, the reduction in total payroll also put them below the first apron and gave them access to the $14.1 million mid-level exception and a $16.8 million trade exception, which they can use to add players. Advertisement True enough, the Nuggets sent Dario Saric to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for center Jonas Valanciunas. Although Valanciunas will make $5 million more than Saric, Denver is able to take in his salary because of the flexibility that they gained from the MPJ-Cam deal. Aside from Valanciunas, the Nuggets were also able to bring back forward Bruce Brown, who was a member of their 2023 title team. Then on Tuesday, Denver added another veteran piece in the person of the sharpshooting Tim Hardaway Jr. and with still some money to spare, they might not be done. As it stands, the Nuggets have lost only MPJ and Russell Westbrook, but they've added Johnson, Valanciunas, Hardaway, and Brown, making the current team much deeper than the one that took the 2025 champions OKC Thunder, to seven games in the second round. Flagg expected to be taken first by Dallas in NBA Draft
The Mavericks nabbed the first pick after winning last month's NBA Draft Lottery and are expected to take Flagg, an 18-year-old American who played last season for Duke University before opting into the draft. Flagg was a consensus pick as the top US college player last season, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocked shots a game for the Blue Devils, who lost to Houston in the semi-finals of the national college tournament. Former NBA player Brian Scalabrine introduced Flagg to Duke coach Jon Scheyer. "He will dominate 10 different ways in one game and 10 different ways in 10 different games," Scalabrine said. Flagg, a versatile playmaker, stands 6-foot-9 (2.06m) and weighs 225 pounds (102kg). He made his only pre-draft team visit to see Dallas and would be the first player from Maine drafted since 1984. Flagg could be just the player Mavericks fans need to put aside the memories of Dallas trading star guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis last February. Flagg would be the third number one pick on the Mavs' roster alongside Davis and Kyrie Irving, who is recovering from knee surgery. The Mavericks could use Flagg, which was to have been Irving's role. For the moment, Flagg just wants to get his NBA career started. "I think the biggest thing is... not trying to think too far into the future not worrying about what's coming down the road," Flagg told Sports Illustrated. "Just focusing on right here, right now, on what I can control." San Antonio is set to select second, followed by Philadelphia, Charlotte, Utah, Washington, New Orleans, Brooklyn and Toronto. Phoenix has reportedly obtained the 10th overall choice from Houston in a trade for star forward Kevin Durant, but since the deal cannot be completed until next month, Houston might make the actual selection but do so at the direction of the Suns as part of the blockbuster deal. The Oklahoma City Thunder, who captured a first NBA crown on Sunday, have the 15th and 24th first-round picks. The Portland Trail Blazers have the 11th pick. They have made a deal with Boston for 35-year-old guard Jrue Holiday, ESPN reported, sending Anfernee Simons and two second-round draft picks to the Celtics. Holiday spent four days with Portland in 2023, obtained in a deal that sent Damian Lillard to Milwaukee before being shipped to Boston, where he won a second NBA title last year.

Cooper Flagg draws comparison to LeBron James by former NBA champion
Projected No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg is a highly-touted prospect entering the 2025 NBA draft, and the National College Player of the Year recently earned a comparison to LeBron James. Flagg led Duke to the Final Four, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks on 38.5% shooting from 3-point range. He became the 22nd player in program history to be named a consensus first-team All-American. Advertisement The 18-year-old has drawn comparisons to the likes of Grant Hill, Kawhi Leonard and Jayson Tatum. Former 12-year NBA veteran and champion Brian Scalabrine, speaking Tuesday on the "Dan Patrick Show," said Flagg reminds him of James based on how he processes the game mentally. Scalabrine revealed that he previously spent time training Flagg when he was entering high school in Maine. He was impressed with how quickly he was able to add new skill sets to his game at such a young age and how he still has that trait now, as he is on the verge of entering the NBA. I think it is LeBron James without having to be 260 pounds and a freight train. Cooper Flagg is a supercomputer. Everything you tell him, within 24 hours, he figured it out. The next time you tell him something else, (he figures it out). ... I've been around a lot of players. I've been around Hall of Fame players, I've never met someone who can just pick up things at such a high rate. When people talk about NBA players (not making it), a lot of it has to do with their computer and processor. He just processes on a rate that I've never seen before, so I'm only assuming that it's like LeBron James. Flagg established himself as the overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 pick because of his size, athleticism and ability to affect games on both ends of the court. Former Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski even called him the best freshman to ever play with the Blue Devils. Advertisement The 6-foot-8 forward is expected to join the Dallas Mavericks on June 25 after reportedly meeting with the organization this week. He isn't expected to work out with any other teams, likely after receiving word that the team would select him with the first pick. Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said last month that he believes the team is an excellent situation for Flagg, with their mixture of established veterans and up-and-coming players. He believes Flagg will be able to step in and make an immediate contribution. After trading away cornerstone Luka Dončić, the Mavericks hope Flagg can step in and be their long-term solution. Should Flagg indeed hear his name called first, the ACC Freshman of the Year will become the sixth Blue Devil to be selected as the top pick.
