Beach Boys icon Brian Wilson's cause of death has been revealed publicly two weeks after his passing at 82. Wilson's children announced his death on the singer's official Instagram page on Wednesday June 11 - a year after it emerged that he had been diagnosed with a neurocognitive disorder similar to dementia. Per a death certificate obtained by TMZ, Wilson died from respiratory arrest - which occurs when the heart is still beating, but the lungs stop functioning, making it impossible for the person to get oxygen. Wilson was also suffering from a litany of other health issues at the time of his death, with infections sepsis and cystitis also listed on the certificate. Associated factors include neurodegenerative disorder, obstructive sleep apnea, chronic respiratory failure and chronic kidney disease. The God Only Knows hitmaker shot to fame as the frontman of the Beach Boys, for which he served as the principal songwriter as well as the co-lead vocalist. Wilson formed the Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and their friend Al Jardine. The original name of the band was the Pendletones, and they exploded onto the scene with their 1961 song Surfin', written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love. Over the course of the 1960s the group became one of the most beloved in America, releasing albums like Surfin' Safari, Surfin' U.S.A. and Surfer Girl. Their 1966 hit God Only Knows was branded 'the greatest song ever written' by Beatles legend Paul McCartney. Along with their pioneering musical style, the band also conjured up an intoxicating image of a carefree California lifestyle of sunshine, palm trees and sea air. However Wilson's involvement with the Beach Boys shifted dramatically when he suffered a nervous breakdown in 1964, followed by two more in the next couple of years. He promptly withdrew from touring but retained his backstage control of the band as a writer and producer, masterminding their 1966 magnum opus Pet Sounds and providing lead vocals on many of the tracks. Pet Sounds struggled commercially at first, but ultimately earned a reputation as one of the most acclaimed pop albums ever created. Melinda, his second and final wife, married Wilson in 1995, and he credited her as his 'savior' in his devastated statement on her death last year; the couple are pictured in 1995 Last February, shortly after his wife Melinda's death, Wilson's family filed to obtain a conservatorship of him, announcing his diagnosis with a dementia-like condition. They said he often made 'spontaneous irrelevant or incoherent utterances,' had a 'very short attention span and while unintentionally disruptive, is frequently unable to maintain decorum appropriate to the situation,' in documents obtained by The Blast. Melinda, the family argued, had been attending to Wilson's 'daily living needs' and her absence had left him 'unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.' The last time Wilson was seen in public was April 2024, when he emerged looking frail in a wheelchair to attend a Los Angeles Lakers game. News of his death provoked an outpouring of grief from his fans, including Elton John, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Mick Fleetwood, Micky Dolenz, the Backstreet Boys, Randy Bachman and John Lennon's sons Julian Lennon and Sean Lennon. Wilson's survivors include his daughters Carnie, 57, and Wendy, 55, whom he had with his first wife Marilyn, as well as the five children he adopted with Melinda, who are called Dakota Rose, Daria Rose, Delanie Rose, Dylan and Dash.

Wilson, who co-founded the iconic Beach Boys in 1961, was considered "a genius" for his recording techniques and pop music creation. While he left the group in 1964, he continued to collaborate with songwriting and production. Wilson's solo career spanned over 30 years, giving the world iconic albums such as "Brian Wilson" (1988), "Imagination" (1998), "Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin" (2010), and "No Pier Pressure" (2012). Along with two Grammy Awards and nine Grammy nominations, the Beach Boys singer was inducted, with the group, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Wilson passed away at age 82, just a few weeks shy of his 83rd birthday. The Beach Boys Chart New Top 40s Following Brian Wilson's Passing

The group's catalog experienced a massive uptick in every form of consumption after news broke that founding member and musical legend Brian Wilson had passed away in mid-June. In the United Kingdom, multiple albums by the Grammy-nominated group have returned to various charts, and this week, they even climb to never-before-seen peaks as sales and streams of everything connected to the California legends expanded. Sounds of Summer Becomes a Top 40 Success Among the three Beach Boys projects that appear on at least one albums chart in the U.K. this week, only Sounds of Summer – The Very Best Of manages to reenter and reach a new peak on several tallies. The compilation, which gathers many of the band's most famous tunes, rockets from No. 90 to No. 32 on the Official Albums chart, the ranking of the most consumed full-lengths and EPs in the country. As it jumps nearly 60 spots, the singles-packed project reaches the top 40 for the first time, only eight weeks into its tenure on the list – but long after its original release. Sounds of Summer also becomes a top 40 win on the Official Albums Streaming tally for the very first time. On that ranking, which looks only at a title's total number of plays on platforms like Spotify, the Beach Boys compilation reenters at No. 32. It had previously spent just three weeks on the tally since debuting in mid-2020 and had not appeared on the list in nearly four years. The same compilation can also be found on both the Official Albums Sales and Official Album Downloads charts. It just misses the top 40 on the former and dips from its all-time peak of No. 2 to third place on the downloads-only roster. Pet Sounds Surges on Several Tallies Pet Sounds — widely regarded as not only the most critically-acclaimed Beach Boys release but also one of the greatest musical projects of all time — rises to a new high of No. 18 on the Official Albums Sales chart this week. At the same time, it reenters both the Official Albums and Official Vinyl Albums tallies at Nos. 85 and 23, respectively. Like Sounds of Summer, Pet Sounds also appears on the Official Album Downloads tally inside the top 10. It additionally surges from No. 81 to No. 28 on the Official Physical Albums ranking. The Beach Boys Greatest Hits Compilation Keeps Going Last week, Greatest Hits by The Beach Boys soared to No. 52 on the Official Album Downloads chart, as platforms like iTunes are typically where most fans go to purchase songs and full-lengths by artists who have just passed away. This frame, the compilation — which appears only on that one ranking — dips a handful of spaces to No. 52.

Last year, a judge ruled that Wilson should be in a court conservatorship to manage his personal and medical decisions after the death of his wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, who was instrumental in looking after him. A doctor's declaration said Wilson had a 'major neurocognitive disorder,' was taking medication for dementia, and was 'unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.' In a report, Robert Frank Cipriano, an attorney appointed by the court to represent Wilson's interests, said the musician acknowledged the need for the conservatorship. Cipriano's report to the court said he visited Wilson at his 'impeccably well maintained residence in Beverly Hills,' where he lived with two of his seven children and a long-term live-in caregiver. Wilson was able to move around with help from a walker and the caregiver, Cipriano said, and at the time had a good sense of who he was, where he was, and time, but he was unable to name his children beyond the two that lived with him. Wilson co-founded the Beach Boys with his brothers Dennis and Carl, along with their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine in the early 1960s. At their start, the Hawthorne, Calif., natives became fan favourites thanks to their pop vocal harmonies and breezy rock 'n' roll energy. Wilson elevated the ensemble in the studio with his mercurial musical arrangements and creative choices that helped them evolve during the '60s and '70s as it ushered in what became known as the California Sound. In an interview with Postmedia last year, Love, who was the band's chief lyricist, said that Wilson's decision to step away from the road and focus on their studio output allowed the Beach Boys to achieve music immortality. To this day, he still leads the group on the road with new musicians having been brought into the fold. 'The power of the music to create happiness is amazing. The biggest blessing of my life is that I can still sing the lead on the songs … That partnership we created, my cousin Brian and I, with the lyrics and the harmonies, it's like a reincarnation every time we step onstage,' he said.
