Jazz Coach Speaks Out on Benching Walter Clayton Jr. For Being 'Nonchalant'
Jazz Coach Speaks Out on Benching Walter Clayton Jr. For Being 'Nonchalant' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Utah Jazz remain undefeated through two games in the 2025 Salt Lake City NBA Summer League after escaping with a thrilling 112-111 victory on Monday against the Memphis Grizzlies at Jon M. Huntsman Center. Advertisement Brice Sensabaugh starred for the Jazz, as he dropped 37 points on an efficient 9-for-14 shooting from the floor while hitting 13 of his 14 tries from the foul line. But many eyes were also on the Jazz's rookies, particularly Ace Bailey and Walter Clayton Jr., who both had their moments. Clayton, however, did not have a good showing early on, as he was even benched in the first half. The former Florida Gators star struggled with ball security in the first two quarters, turning the ball over five times. Florida Gators guard Walter Clayton Jr. (1) talks to the crowd during the National Championship celebration at Ben Hill Griffin Pendleton-Imagn Images 'Tonight, we had to take him out of the game in the first half because he was a little too nonchalant,' Jazz Summer League coach Scott Morrison said of Clayton (via Ben Anderson of KSL Sports). Advertisement However, Clayton turned things around after halftime, as noted by Morrison. 'But then we don't win the game without him in the second half, and he was the guy we wanted to go to down the stretch,' Morrison added. Clayton shot just 1-for-3 from the field in the second half, but he had two rebounds and four assists, as he displayed his abilities to set up his teammates for scoring chances. He was also a plus-12 in the final two periods. Overall, Clayton had four points, three rebounds and six assists to go along with a plus-11 in the win over Memphis. Clayton and the Jazz will look to go 3-0 when they take on the Oklahoma City Thunder in their final game of the Salt Lake City Summer League on Wednesday. Former Ohio State basketball star has himself a game in NBA Summer League
In case you've forgotten with all the struggles the Ohio State basketball program has had over the last few seasons, there are indeed some pretty good players that have come through Columbus recently and are still doing some great things in the NBA. Take former player Brice Sensabaugh, for instance. He had a very productive year at Ohio State, making the Big Ten All-Freshman team by averaging 16.3 points per contest. He declared for the 2023 NBA draft after his freshman season. Sensabaugh was drafted by the Utah Jazz with the No. 28 selection and has since been carving out a nice little niche for himself, so much so that he became a key contributor last season, averaging 10.9 points per contest while appearing in 71 games. For some reason, Sensabaugh is playing in the developmental NBA Summer League -- most likely so he can continue to hone his skills -- and did nothing to hurt himself on Monday night. All the Florida native did was set a Jazz Summer League record by pouring in 37 points in a 112-111 win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Even more impressive is that Sensabaugh piled up that many points on just 14 shots. He went 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and 9-of-14 from the field. He also got to the line quite a bit, sinking 13-of-14 from the charity stripe. He also pulled down four rebounds. Quite a day indeed. There's little doubt that Sensabaugh will again be a big part of the Jazz's plans this coming winter with performances like this, and he might just be hitting his stride and take a big step forward against the better competition. We'll be here to follow his progress throughout the 2025-2026 season. Watch Utah's Brice Sensabaugh go off for 37 in Summer League, Ace Bailey looks better in second outing
One of the "rules" for Summer League is this: If a player got regular run during the NBA season, they should dominate in Summer League. Their game should have risen to the point that they were above this level of summer run. Case in point: Utah's Brice Sensabaugh. The former Ohio State forward played 71 games for the Jazz last season, and on Monday night went out and dropped 37 in Utah's win over Memphis in the Salt Lake Summer League. Also of note from that game: Utah's No. 5 pick Ace Bailey looked much more comfortable after a rough first outing. What rookies do in Summer League is more of a measuring stick than anything else, but a good sign is a player who learns and improves over the course of those games. Bailey did that between his first two Summer League games.

NBA Summer League: Jazz rookie Ace Bailey drops 18 points, throws down 2 huge dunks in win over Grizzlies
Thanks to a big night from Ace Bailey, the Jazz rallied to top the Grizzlies and improve to 2-0 in the Utah Summer League. () Ace Bailey, at least so far, seems to be fitting in just fine in Salt Lake City. Bailey dropped 18 points and had seven rebounds and three assists in the Utah Jazz's 112-111 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night in the Utah Summer League. He even threw down a huge lob after a perfect assist from Isaiah Collier in the second quarter. Bailey had 12 of his 18 points in the first half after he shot 5-of-9 from the field. He threw down another dunk in the third quarter, too, after picking up a rebound. The dunk of the night, though, belonged to teammate Kyle Filipowski. He brought the ball up the court near the midway point of the third quarter and went straight at the rim before throwing down a one-handed dunk over GG Jackson. Finally, thanks to a 13-3 run capped by a Bailey 3-pointer, the Jazz jumped out in front in the early minutes of the fourth quarter. That was enough to give them the edge the rest of the way and lead them to the one-point win, which moved them to 2-0 so far in the Utah Summer League. Advertisement Jackson led the Grizzlies with 27 points and five rebounds in the loss. Jaylen Wells added 23 points, and Cam Spencer finished with 23 points after going 7-of-10 from behind the arc. Though Bailey had a strong showing all around, it was Brice Sensabaugh who dominated for the Jazz. He put up 37 points while draining six 3-pointers and shooting 9-of-14 from the field. He came up with a huge steal in the final seconds, too. Jackson, however, hit a buzzer-beater right after that was just inside of the 3-point line — which left the Grizzlies just a point shy of forcing the extra period. The Jazz took Sensabaugh with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2023 draft out of Ohio State, and he averaged 10.9 points and three rebounds largely off the bench last season. Cody Williams finished with 18 points for the Jazz, too, and Isaiah Collier added 13. Advertisement The game was the second Summer League action Bailey has seen so far with the Jazz. He had eight points in his debut , which came against No. 3 overall pick V.J. Edgecombe. Bailey was widely considered to be the No. 3 overall pick in the NBA Draft earlier this summer, but he declined to work out for any franchise. In fact, he was the only American-based prospect who didn't work out for any team outside of the combine. The Jazz, however, still opted to take him fifth. Then, after a bit of awkwardness, Bailey reported to the team and declined that he had any issue with the franchise. 'Nah, not at all,' Bailey said when asked if he considered not reporting during his introductory media conference last month . 'Just blessed to be in this position I am.' Advertisement While it's still very early in Bailey's playing career — he's yet to make his debut with the franchise in a real game, after all — he's clearly off to a solid start with the Jazz organization.
