Officer injured after stolen vehicle rams police in Auckland's Manurewa

Police are hunting for the driver of a stolen vehicle that struck and injured a police officer before fleeing in Auckland last night. The stolen vehicle was spotted parked near Southmall in Manurewa at around 11.30pm on Tuesday. Detective Inspector Karen Bright said two police units arrived on scene and signalled for the vehicle to remain stopped. "As police approached the vehicle on foot , the vehicle fled, hitting a police constable and collided with a patrol vehicle." St John said one ambulance responded to the incident. ADVERTISEMENT "One person was assessed at the scene and transported to Middlemore Hospital in a moderate condition." Bright said the officer had been discharged from hospital. "The vehicle was later located abandoned in Manurewa. This vehicle will undergo an examination and enquiries are underway to locate the driver," she said. "Investigators will now be working to locate this individual, and we suggest doing the right thing and handing yourself in at the nearest police station." Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105. Police being rammed every second day A police car which was "repeatedly rammed" in Auckland's Mount Wellington earlier this month. (Source: NZ Police) ADVERTISEMENT An internal police document released to 1News earlier this year revealed the number of intentional rammings of police staff and vehicles amounted to one every second day across the country. Deputy Police Commissioner Tania Kura said offenders were more brazen than ever when fleeing police. "People who've got stolen vehicles or evidence in their vehicle that they don't want to be caught. Sometimes people actually just want to hurt us because we are police." Police Association president Chris Cahill said: "An officer a month is hospitalised because of an injury in a ramming — that's not minor injuries — this is hospitalised." Nelson officer Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming was hit and killed by a vehicle on New Year's Day. A trial date for the accused has been set for May 2026.

Millie Bright names England's player of the tournament after Women's Euros win

Lucy Bronze started every match of the Lionesses' triumphant campaign in Switzerland (Picture: Getty) Millie Bright has picked out Lucy Bronze as England's player of the tournament at the Women's Euro 2025 and believes the defender deserves her winners' medal 'more than anyone' in the squad. Bronze, 33, started all six matches across England's triumphant campaign – just as she had done in 2022 – and headed home a crucial goal to spark the side's fightback in a thrilling quarter-final victory over Sweden. On Sunday evening, Bronze was once again at her inspirational best as the Lionesses came from behind to defend their title with a 3-1 win over world champions Spain on penalties. However, the Chelsea right-back went down in a heap with a knee problem in the second half and had to be taken just before the hour-mark, meaning she was forced to watch the remainder of the final from the sidelines in Basel. After Sarina Wiegman's side prevailed in another nerve-jangling shootout to become the first ever English team to win a major tournament on foreign soil, Bronze revealed that she had somehow played the entirety of the Euros with a fractured tibia. 'I've actually played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia, but no one knew,' Bronze told BBC Sport after making her 36th major tournament appearance for England, more than any other player. 'And now I've just hurt my knee today on the other leg. The full-back played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia (Picture: Getty) Bright is 'so chuffed' for Bronze (Picture: Getty) 'I think that's why I got a lot of praise from the girls after the Sweden game because I've been in a lot of pain, but that's what it takes to play for England so that's what I'll do. 'They know that, I think we inspire each other by playing through things like that and it got to the end, in the end.' Asked just how painful the injury had been, Bronze bluntly replied: 'Very painful.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page Bright, who formed part of Wiegman's defence alongside Bronze in 2022, showered her old team-mate with praise as she dissected England's heroics on the Daly Brightness podcast. According to Bright, Bronze was the Lionesses' standout player in Switzerland and once again proved that she is prepared to 'do anything' to get her hands on a winners' medal. 'Lucy doesn't go down! When I see her holding that knee, I get scared and then when she went back on… she'll run through a million brick walls and she's not coming off unless she has to,' Bright said. 'Obviously, in those moments there have been so many injuries and players going back on the pitch and you don't know if you're making it worse, but Lucy would do anything for that medal and she deserves it the most of any player. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page 'I think she's been unbelievable at this tournament, by the way. I think she's been our best player throughout the whole tournament, that leader, she's been driving us forward, rallying the girls together. 'In the tough moments, she's the one that has been pushing us forward and making sure everyone is in place. 'We know she will have been looking after the youngsters, but she deserves it more than anyone so I'm so, so chuffed for her. She really does deserve it.' Kelly scored the decisive spot-kick in Basel (Picture: Getty) Bright also gave special mention to Chloe Kelly, applauding the Arsenal forward bouncing back from a 'dark moment' in her career to help inspire the Lionesses to a second straight European Championship title. 'I've got no words for her. She's the kindest human you could ever meet, the best team-mate,' the Chelsea captain said of Kelly. 'She accepts her role, whether it's five minutes on the pitch, no minutes on the pitch, training player, starter. She'll be the best team-mate you could ever, ever ask for. Bright captained the Lionesses in Williamson's absence at the 2023 World Cup (Picture: Getty) 'She's probably one of the most underrated players and I think people have finally seen how world-class she is. That move to Arsenal has just resparked her. 'Fair play, all that she's gone through… about to quit football, mistreated in an environment to the point where she felt like quitting football and couldn't play. 'Now look at her, one of the best players in the world. She's literally saved England and saved Arsenal as well.' England head coach Wiegman further cemented her legendary status (Picture: Getty) While the Lionesses made life difficult for themselves throughout the knockout rounds, Bright is adamant 'nothing else matters' now that the trophy has been secured. 'I feel like I've been at the tournament to be honest! I feel so drained,' she continued. 'Honestly, it's crazy, but unbelievable and the resilience the girls have shown over the whole tournament. 'It's not been perfect, but who gives a s***? You've got a medal around your neck, you're lifting the trophy again and you've made history, back-to-back champions. Nothing else matters. 'I'm so proud of everyone and I'm so, so happy for the girls. It's actually been a really proud and nice moment. 'It's been my first tournament watching from a different angle and I've done a lot of pacing and stuff. You feel like you're there and you're present, but you can't influence. 'But it's been so nice to see the youngsters coming through, everyone contributing and that team together, it's been a real joy to watch from the sides.' 'Gobsmacked': community shows up for man seriously injured in house fire

Music was pumping, sausages were sizzling, and the Brights were overwhelmed with the show of support for their brother. Matthew Bright was rushed to hospital after suffering burns to 40 per cent of his body in an accidental kitchen fire in Waratah just before 5pm on July 7. Out the back of a local coffee spot on Sunday, July 27, the Waratah community wanted him to know he was not alone. "It's amazing, it's just an incredible show of support, you can see how many people love and support Matthew," Hugh-Angus Bright, Matthew's brother, said. Dan Brown, better known as the Mullet Lord online, held a fundraiser for Mr Bright's recovery at Lords Coffee and Associates in Waratah. Beginning at midday, Mr Brown said there was a "crazy" line out the front of the shop, and by 1.30pm he reckoned roughly 150 people had stopped by. "It's been quite a turnout, even the firies rocked up, which was really cool to see," he said. Like any fundraiser, people lined up to buy raffle tickets, but there weren't your typical prizes. Along with headgear and boots signed by the Knights' Kalyn Ponga, and a painting from Otis Carey, Mr Brown was parting with pieces of himself. Known for his long mane, the Mullet Lord snipped off strands to go to four lucky bidders. "They say haircuts don't hurt, but that one did," he said. "It stung every part of my body, but I've always been a team player and anything to raise money for Matt." Mr Bright's sister Ellie Bright said he was "gobsmacked" at the amount of community support pouring in through their GoFundMe page. "It's a terrible situation, but it has brought the best out in everyone around us," she said. "It makes me sad that there are so many people who might not have the network or the ability to do this type of thing." Mr Bright was receiving care at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital, where his condition, while serious, had stabilised. His brother, Nicholas, said they were taking it one day at a time. "We're just staying in the moment, and every day he is getting better," he said. The siblings said yesterday was a good day as Matthew had his favourite beverage, a diet coke, and listened to Triple J's Hottest 100 of Australian Songs. Ms Bright said her brother's recovery was heading in the right direction. "I kept saying he's having small wins every day and that will compound to big wins over time," she said. Mary Earps and Millie Bright will forever regret walking out on England

Whether she is ever recalled to the squad by Wiegman remains to be seen, but it could be that, although Bright has not officially announced her retirement from international football, this is the end. A fine player, a brave competitor, a veteran of four tournaments and once a respected leader within the squad, she might not wear the Three Lions on her chest again if Wiegman feels betrayed by what happened. What a sad and regrettable outcome that would be. Only Bright knows why she pulled out of the squad and if she will be fit for the start of the Women's Super League season, but surely she regrets the decision when she watches the euphoric, ecstatic scenes in Zurich and Geneva. Bright walked away and it seems unlikely England will be rushing to welcome her back. The Lionesses have not missed goalkeeper Earps on the pitch since her shock retirement, at the age of just 32. It could be that they have not missed her off it, either. The form of Hannah Hampton, the younger rival who replaced her as No 1 and prompted her petulant decision to quit, has fully vindicated Wiegman's call to make that change to the pecking order. Earps, who is desperate to launch herself as a media personality while she continues to play her club football for Paris St-Germain, has fame and celebrity. She will probably go on to have a decent enough career in television or radio – although may be frustrated in her rumoured ambition to become the next Alex Scott as a presenter rather than a pundit – but she foolishly cut her England career short. The suspicion is she did so to get a head start on the rest of the 2022 class, looking to strike while her playing profile was at its highest having been crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2023. It may well pay off; she certainly has the charisma and enthusiasm for it. Yet, it is a decision all those who have retired from the game know she will come to regret. You are, as the old saying goes, a long time retired. Nothing will ever replace the thrill and excitement of playing. Even Gary Lineker, who launched the most successful media career of any former player, admits he would still rather be playing for England than watching and talking. As one former England international told Telegraph Sport: 'Mary will find out what we all found out when we retired. People soon forget about you. 'We all look back on your time with England as a privilege and an honour. They are the best days of your life. The last thing you want to do is cut them short. She will, in time, regret it, I'm sure. She could have been involved in at least two more major tournaments as a goalkeeper.' Decisions made in haste can often lead to a long period of regret. You suspect this is one of those. Bright and Earps should have been part of this England squad, but chose another route. They prioritised their own needs over the team's. This pack of Lionesses has grown stronger without them. Wiegman said they had already moved on before the tournament began. Everything that has happened since confirms it.

Millie Bright praises England duo and makes Euro 2025 final prediction

Millie Bright is confident England will come out on top in the Women's Euro 2025 final and believes Spain should be 'fearful' of Sarina Wiegman's side. England, the holders, looked to be crashing out of this summer's tournament after going a goal down to Italy in Tuesday night's thrilling semi-final in Geneva. But Michelle Agyemang found a dramatic late equaliser from the bench, just as she had done in the quarter-finals against Sweden, before Chloe Kelly scored in the last minute of extra-time to seal a 2-1 victory. The Lionesses' remarkable and somewhat rocky run means they will be playing in their third successive major tournament final when they take the field against Spain on Sunday evening. Montse Tome's Spain – the reigning world champions – represent a daunting prospect for England heading into their first-ever European Championship final having edged past the 2022 runners-up, Germany, in extra-time on Wednesday. But Bright – who last month made herself unavailable for England selection – believes the Lionesses' have proven they can overcome any 'obstacle' with their never-say-die attitude across the campaign. Looking back on England's win over Italy, Bright told Sky Sports: 'It was never in doubt! I believe in the girls 100 per cent, from start to finish. This team has overcome so many obstacles. 'We've gone a goal down, we've gone to extra-time, we've gone to penalties and we've faced a little bit of criticism: the squads a little inexperienced, there's a lot of youngsters, how will we cope? 'There's many obstacles that we've overcome and every time I watch the team perform I'm super proud, proud to be English, proud of the girls and the youngsters coming through. 'It just goes to show that age is just a number, from the likes of Lucy Bronze, our most senior player, to the youngsters coming on, rescuing us, taking us to the semi-finals and now taking us to the final as well.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Aged just 19, Agyemang has well and truly announced herself as one of England's most potent weapons with her magnificent performances off the bench in Switzerland. Wiegman hailed Agyemang as a 'special' talent in the wake of the teen's heroics against Italy – and Bright has no doubts that the Lionesses have unearthed a gem. 'She's been incredible. She's not only contributed, she's taken us to the semi-finals and the final, just like Chloe Kelly has,' the England and Chelsea defender said of Agyemang. 'But listen, she sends a message to any youngster out there and that is wanting to play for England. 'She probably didn't have going to the Euros in her sights and she's there and not only is she there, but she's rescuing the team, playing her part and what an incredible, exciting time for England. 'A youngster like herself, coming through, and that is the future so it's certainly looking bright from there.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video According to Bright, Kelly has further underlined her 'big-game' credentials by helping rescue the Lionesses out of two rather sizeable holes against both Sweden and Italy en route to the final. 'She's a big-game player. She's about big moments, all that aura, all that confidence,' Bright said of the Arsenal forward. 'She never feels the pressure, she's always calm and collected and she thrives in these positions. 'She took that penalty and she's smiling before she's taking it. There wasn't one doubt in my mind that she was putting it in the back of the net against Sweden and then the same in the Italy game. 'I think she's a perfect example of going through tough times. If you look at prior to the tournament and everything she had to go through, she's rose above everything and really showed her true character. 'She's also an unbelievable team-mate. She'll do absolutely anything for the team, whether that's coming on as a sub or starting.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Bright – speaking ahead of Spain's semi-final defeat of Germany – insisted she was backing England to win 'no matter' which team advanced through to face them in Basel. 'I'm not bothered which team the girls face because it's a final. You're playing in a Euros final and any team you come up against is going to be tough and difficult to beat,' the Chelsea captain added. More Trending 'They're very different teams. Germany have that resilience, that grit and that fight to sometimes play a little poorly and still get over the line. 'Spain want to dominate, they don't like defending, they don't want you in their faces. 'We want to be proper England and we've shown that so far I don't think they'd enjoy facing us. 'But I think any team should fear us and we're in the final for a reason. You don't get there by the off chance. The girls have shown that from start to finish and I'm backing them no matter who they face.' Who will win Euro 2025? For more stories like this, check our sport page.
