Alpine skiing-Brignone still aiming for Olympics, wants to leave on her terms

Alpine skiing-Brignone still aiming for Olympics, wants to leave on her terms MILAN - Italy's Alpine ski champion Federica Brignone said she was doing all she could to be fit for her home Milan-Cortina Olympics next year and wanted to retire smiling on the slopes rather than forced out by injury. The 34-year-old told reporters on Wednesday, however, that it was still too early to say whether she would win the battle. "I got injured at the best moment of my career, of my life," Brignone said at an event in Milan for her sponsor Banca Generali. "And this is bothering me. I do not want to retire from ski now, like that. I loved this sport so much that I want to retire when I am happy, feeling good on the slopes." Overall World Cup champion Brignone, who was a leading medal hope at the Games, fractured her left leg and tore knee ligaments when she crashed during a race in the Italian championships in April. The giant slalom world champion said she remained positive but also realistic and had to respect her body and do what was best for herself. "My first goal is my health and that will continue to be and it won't change because of external pressures, in the sense that if my body won't make it, it won't make it. I think it will make it and I am very positive, it is responding," she said. "Some things are going really beyond expectations. Some other things are giving me a hard time, but it's normal, actually after suffering that kind of injury. "I think I'll be back for the winter. But that's not something I can predict." Brignone said she would not know until the crutches came off for good how much load she could put on the leg. "Obviously it was destroyed, so that has to be respected," she added. The World Cup season starts in October with the Olympics running from February 6-22. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

The 34-year-old, one of Italy's leading medal hopes at the Games, fractured her left leg and tore knee ligaments when she crashed into a gate during a race in the Italian championships. "I would like to say that I will be present at the next Olympics, but as of today I don't know. I am working for that too, but my health comes first of all," Brignone told reporters in the medical centre in Turin on Tuesday. "It is difficult to make any predictions, because there are many steps and we don't have any precise schedule," she said, adding that she remained confident and positive. Brignone, who is walking with clutches, underwent surgery after the crash in April. "As of today we can rule out a further operation, Federica had a major injury but the ACL is fine," said Andrea Panzeri, president of the medical staff of Italy's winter sports federation. The 2026 Winter Olympics, co-hosted by Milan and the Alpine town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, run from February 6-22. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Brignone still unsure if she will be fit for Winter Games

Brignone, who turns 35 in July, won the alpine ski World Cup overall title and World Championship giant slalom gold last season but suffered a career-threatening double leg fracture in her last race in April. "I'd like to be able to say that I'll definitely be at the start of the next Winter Olympics, but today I don't know," Brignone told a press briefing in Turin. The Games are being hosted by Milan Cortina next February. "I'm going to try, I'm doing everything I can, but the most important thing for me is to get better and then come back to ski racing," she said. "The Olympics are a great source of motivation, it's true that there's still time between now and the Olympics, but time is running out." The Italian dominated the 2024-25 season on the women's circuit, winning 10 races, her second overall World Cup title and both the giant slalom and downhill crystal globes. Brignone suffered a double tibia-fibula fracture in her left leg on April 3 during the Italian Championships. She said she does not know when she'll be able to resume training on snow. "As long as I can't put my foot down, it's hard to say, I'll only put skis back on when I'm well, not to be on one leg," she said. During an operation on her broken leg, surgeons noticed a ligament tear in her left knee. "We're not worried about the cruciate ligament," Italian Winter Sports Federation doctor Andrea Panzeri, who is overseeing Brignone's rehabilitation, said on Tuesday.
