Stradbroke Day at Eagle Farm: What to wear, expert tips

Perfect winter weather is forecast for Queensland racing's showpiece event, The Star Stradbroke Day at Eagle Farm. More than 10,000 people are expected at the track on Saturday for world class racing, hospitality and the carnival's fashion finale. Fashion Queensland director Laura Churchill, who manages Brisbane Racing Club's fashions competition, said she was expecting about 70 entrants to compete on stage. The Place Ascot Fashions on the Field has offered up more than $26,000 in prizing through the carnival. The theme for Stradbroke Day each year is black and white with a touch of red, and Mrs Churchill said judges would be looking for participants who make that extra effort. 'It really comes down to the detail and the way an outfit has been put together,' she said. 'It's an elegant dress code that lends itself to a tailored, sophisticated look. 'Black and white with a touch of red is quite classic, so we'll look for outfits that play with layers and structures.' Brisbane Racing Club ambassador Shayna Jack modelled her dress with the Stradbroke Handicap trophy for a photo shoot at Eagle Farm. But the Olympic swimming gold medallist won't be trackside on Saturday due to her own sporting commitments. 'Unfortunately, my swimming commitments have kept me from being trackside for The Star Stradbroke Season,' Ms Jack said. 'Through the coverage that the carnival has received so far, it's clear to see each race day has been as exciting as the last. 'If there's ever a day to be trackside, The Star Stradbroke Day will have the best weather, the most electric crowd and the best trackside entertainment.' More than $6.5 million in prize money will be awarded across the nine-race card, including $3 million for the prestigious Stradbroke Handicap. Brisbane Racing Club CEO Karl deKroo said it promised to be a highlight on the national racing calendar. 'There's no better time to experience racing in Brisbane than The Star Stradbroke Day,' he said. 'After five weeks of thrilling action across Eagle Farm and Doomben, anticipation has been building for Queensland's most prestigious race – The Star Stradbroke Handicap. 'With fine weather forecast, we're expecting more than 10,000 racegoers to enjoy a spectacular day at Eagle Farm, with genuinely world-class racing, Brisbane's best hospitality, striking fashion, and live entertainment.' Mr deKroo said the 2025 carnival had been a stunning success, despite some weather challenges. 'While heavy rain led to four races being postponed on Ladbrokes Derby Day, it also gave us the chance to create a truly memorable Super Saturday on Seven Oaks Day – featuring three Group 1 races and our biggest crowd of the carnival so far,' he said. 'Sky Racing Guineas Day, Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 Day and XXXX Doomben Cup Day all went ahead as scheduled and were incredibly well received. 'We had a bit of fun on Doomben Cup Day, offering every racegoer a free XXXX Gold if Antino – the Pride of Queensland – or Pride Of Jenni could win the race. When Antino stormed home in course-record time, the roar from the crowd was unforgettable.' TIPS FROM RACENET EXPERTS Ben Dorries 1. Spicy Martini. In-form three-year-old filly with a feather weight and decent barrier in what is hardly a vintage Stradbroke. Yes, please, this filly is crazy odds. Toby Edmonds can win his second Stradbroke. 2. Bosustow. It is chips in for me on the three-year-olds and this colt looked slightly underdone in the Fred Best Classic, but can bounce back to Stradbroke glory by reproducing the form that saw him smash his rivals by six lengths the start before. 3. Rothfire. Produced close to the run of his life when going down narrowly in the Doomben 10,000. The query is fitness after a minor injury setback but this old warrior has the heart of Phar Lap. Daniel Pace 1. Golden Mile. The Godolphin gelding showed his class with a fighting third in last week's Kingsford Smith Cup. Rock-hard fit and ready to peak. Slight query on the seven-day backup but trainer James Cummings is confident he can handle it. 2. War Machine. Fair to say he's under the odds but still smashed his rivals in the BRC Sprint. He was powering to the line and looked to have plenty left in the tank. 3. Private Eye. Doubtful he can win first-up going into the Stradbroke but he's a warrior who's had enough trials under his belt to put in a competitive performance.

Antino destroys classy Doomben Cup field in race-record time

Antino continued his imperious vein of form in the Group 1 $1 million XXXX Doomben Cup (2000m), annihilating his rivals in a four-length romp. The last into stride, Antino ($3f TABtouch) settled third from the back as invariable pace-maker Pride Of Jenni ($5) adopted her customary role. Beyond halfway, Pride Of Jenni had opened up by three lengths on Linderman ($10), who in turn held a similar margin over the chasing pack. Past the 800m, Blake Shinn hooked Antino to the outside to begin his trademark long run and the six-year-old rapidly began to loop the field, making up ground hand over fist. Despite being four wide, Shinn had a vice-like grip of Antino as he moved past Pride Of Jenni at the 400m like she was stood still. With Shinn getting stuck-in up the straight, the son of Redwood effortlessly increased his margin with Fawkner Park and Kovalica toiling away to fill the remote placegetter positions. Gollan, a Toowoomba boy, has won multiple Group 1s and 11 straight Brisbane training premierships but said this horse was a different breed. 'This is a new beast in my career,' he said. 'This has been the best horse I have trained . After winning the Toorak Handicap last year, we have all just gotten better as a team. 'Antino has gone to another level, what we have seen today is pretty special. 'It was a pretty good Doomben Cup field and now we will set our sights on the Cox Plate in the spring. 'His style of racing will suit a Cox Plate where you can build and build into it. 'Sometimes he doesn't break out of the barriers well, but Blake just lets him get into his stride and he knows when it is time to go. 'I just said to Blake today I couldn't get him any better and he will do the job for you. 'That's as good a win as I've been involved in.' Pride Of Jenni's trainer and record-breaking master Ciaron Maher summed up the performance in a simple quote: 'That was serious, wasn't it?' A Brisbane Racing Club promotion meant that free beer was enjoyed by patrons at the meeting thanks to Antino's win.

Tony Gollan insists Doomben Cup not a two-horse race between Antino and Pride Of Jenni

There will be beers flowing freely if either Antino or Pride Of Jenni wins the Group 1 Doomben Cup, but champion Queensland trainer Tony Gollan warns 'it's certainly not a two-horse race.' The Brisbane Racing Club's promotion of a free amber ale for any adult on track if either of the two favourites scores the Doomben Cup is a great promotional tool, but Antino's trainer Gollan said it would be no surprise if there was a party pooper. While Blake Shinn 's daring ride on Antino to win the Hollindale Stakes was exceptional, Gollan said the nature of the Gold Coast track that day meant there were plenty of valid excuses among the beaten brigade. Doomben Cup contenders such as Eliyass and Buckaroo were beaten out of sight on the Heavy 9 track that day and other Doomben Cup hopefuls such as last year's winner Bois D'Argent and Fawkner Park also didn't love the sodden track. Pride Of Jenni and Antino may be the top pegs in Doomben Cup betting, but Gollan said there are many chances in one of the better Doomben Cups he can remember in his time training in Brisbane. 'There is some media around the promotion with the free beers and that's all great for the carnival,' Gollan said. 'But this is certainly not a two-horse race. 'We are well aware there are many chances and it's probably as strong a Doomben Cup as we have seen for some time. 'It is a hell of a deep Doomben Cup. 'I don't think I have seen a Doomben Cup for some time with so many chances in it and it will be such a good betting race. 'I think a lot of people will discard the Hollindale form, to a degree, due to the way the track was that day with the kickback. 'You can make excuses for beaten horses there for sure.' Antino had a spin around Doomben at 6am on Tuesday with his regular track work rider, former jockey Baylee Nothdurft, in the saddle. It wasn't an overtaxing gallop with Gollan mindful it was a big effort to win the Hollindale and now he just needs to tick him over before Saturday. Pride Of Jenni was due to arrive on a flight to Queensland on Tuesday night and Gollan is glad the Ciaron Maher -trained freakish talent is in the race. Given the different track conditions – with little rain forecast in Brisbane this week – and Pride Of Jenni's frontrunning style, Gollan said it will be a very different race to the Hollindale. 'How much you want to take out of that Gold Coast meeting will be up to each person individually,' Gollan said. 'I think it's going to be a hell of a race, we know what Pride Of Jenni's style of racing is. 'There are plenty coming out of the Hollindale that you can make excuses for. 'There were contributing factors down there as to why some horses didn't run to their best, with the surface that day and the kickback.' Gollan said Antino, last year's Group 1 Toorak Handicap champion, is the best horse he has trained. Asked specifically why he holds Antino in such high esteem, Gollan said it was because 'of his ability to sustain a gallop for longer than any horse I've ever trained'. Pride Of Jenni drew barrier one for her Doomben Cup assignment while Antino drew barrier 11 of 13. Drawing out wide isn't too much of a worry for Antino, given he is sometimes slow away and a wider draw can be preferable to an inside draw. He started from barrier 10 of 13 when Shinn took off from back in the field to win the Hollindale. The Doomben Cup has produced double-figure winners the last three years with Bois D'Argent ($26) getting the chocolates last year and the previous two years Huetor saluted at $10 and $26.

Beefed-up World Pool presence to showcase Queensland winter carnival to globe

The Queensland winter carnival will be showcased to extra global viewers, with Doomben set to play host to World Pool meetings for the first time as part of a wider portfolio across three Group 1 race days. Last year's winter carnival was the first time the Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool featured in Queensland, with races from the Sunshine State beamed internationally and punters betting into a supercharged international parimutuel wagering pool. It was an immediate success, with Queensland Derby Day at Eagle Farm combining with the Epsom Derby Day in the UK to set a then-record wagering turnover, with 12 races across the two race days generating $HK385.2 million (approx. $A74.2m). In 2025, Doomben will be part of the World Pool schedule for the first time with selected races on Saturday's Group 1 Doomben 10,000 card and the following Saturday's Group 1 Doomben Cup meeting included. The races on both Doomben 10,000 and Doomben Cup days will create international double events alongside black-type racing from Newbury (UK) and The Curragh (Ireland) respectively. Stradbroke Handicap Day will stand alone as the only World Pool fixture on June 14. The trio of meetings will form a total of nine races broadcast live to Hong Kong audiences and form one international parimutuel wagering pool for racing fans across the globe. 'World Pool is the most powerful vehicle we have to showcase Queensland racing to a truly global audience,' Brisbane Racing Club CEO Karl deKroo said. 'This year, nine of our premier races will be beamed into more than 25 jurisdictions and viewed by millions of punters and racing fans worldwide. 'We're grateful to HKJC CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges and his team for their ongoing support in elevating Stradbroke Season to the global stage through World Pool. World Pool returns May 17 for a double-header! 🇦🇰 Doomben 10,000 Day, @BrisRacingClub 🇬🇧 Lockinge Stakes Day, @NewburyRacing Mark your calendars… ðŸŒðŸ¤ #WorldPool — World Pool (@WorldPool) May 9, 2025 'Our partnership with the HKJC continues to grow, and we're proud to reach a major milestone with Doomben included in the World Pool schedule for the first time – a significant achievement for our club and our state.' 'World Pool delivers enormous benefits through global wagering liquidity, unprecedented international exposure, and stronger collaboration between racing jurisdictions.' World Pool race footage for international viewers will be provided by BRC's media rights partner, Sky Racing.
