Lorenzo Cotten Jr., of Brockton, won a $1 million prize in the Massachusetts State Lottery's '$10,000,000 Lucky Bucks' instant ticket game, the Massachusetts State Lottery announced in a written statement. Cotten Jr. chose to receive his prize in the form of a one-time payment of $650,000 (before taxes), according to the lottery. He purchased his winning ticket at Deftos Liquors, 1032 Main St. in Brockton. The store receives a $10,000 bonus for its sale of this ticket, according to the lottery. Police investigating 4-year-old's drowning in Brockton, Massachusetts pool
Massachusetts State Police are investigating after a 4-year-old died after being pulled from the pool of a Brockton home over the weekend. It happened Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m. at a home on Sunset Ave. A Brockton police officer attempted life-saving measures on the child after they were pulled from the pool. The 4-year-old, who has since been identified as Hendrix Cooley-Walker, was then rushed to a hospital in Brockton. "We thank all the first responders for their swift action and ask the public to keep the child and their family in their thoughts," Brockton Police said in a statement on Sunday after the incident. According to the Plymouth County District Attorney, Cooley-Walker died around 1:30 a.m. Monday morning at the hospital. "The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney's office started an investigation into the circumstances which led to this fatal drowning incident following the child's death. The investigation is ongoing," the DA's office said in a statement. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death for children one to four years old in the United States. One neighbor who was outside gardening at the time the child was pulled from the pool. "I just heard a 911 call from somewhere down the street, and then a cop car came racing down the neighborhood and made a left there. We all gathered, and they told us to stay out of the street," the neighbor said. No additional details about how Cooley-Walker drowned are currently available.

Brockton police are investigating after a shooting Saturday evening left a teenager seriously injured near South Middle School in Brockton. Brockton police spokesperson Darren Duarte said Brockton Police responded to an area near South Middle School after receiving reports at 7:56 p.m. Saturday, July 12, of a shooting "that seriously injured a male teenager." Duarte said witnesses reported hearing three gunshots and seeing several individuals fleeing the 17-year-old victim was transported to a Boston hospital by Brewster Ambulance, according to Duarte. Stunt driving charge laid with children inside vehicle
South Bruce OPP have charged a motorist after they say officers observed dangerous driving along Sideroad 10 South in the Municipality of Brockton. The incident happened just after 5 p.m. on July 5. According to police, the driver was observed conducting 'burnouts', and fishtailing along the roadway. Three young children were in the front passenger seat, none of which secured by car seats or seatbelts, police say. A 35-year-old Brockton resident has been charged with stunt driving and three counts of driving while a child passenger was not properly secured. Their vehicle was impounded for two weeks, and their driver's license suspended for one month. They have a court date scheduled in August to answer to the charges.
