Major update as girl who fell overboard from Disney Cruise is saved by hero dad

The dad has been hailed as a 'hero' for rescuing his five-year-old daughter when she fell overboard on a Disney Dream cruise - police have now explained how she ended up in the water Police have released remarkable new details about the hero dad who rescued his five-year-old daughter after she fell overboard on a Disney cruise. The nail-biting incident unfolded on June 29 aboard the Disney Dream cruise as it returned to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, following a four-day voyage around the Bahamas. Passengers on the ship described how the father leapt into the sea to go after his daughter when she fell from the railings into the sea below, before swimming over to her to keep her afloat until help arrived. The pair were brought back onto the ship by a rescue boat about 10 minutes later. Now, police have released a more detailed account of how the miraculous rescue played out - and corrected some harmful online speculation, which erroneously claimed the dad had placed the girl on the railings himself for a photograph. ‌ ‌ According to the new statement from the Broward Sheriff's Office, the five-year-old girl "lost her balance while sitting on a railing" and fell backwards through a porthole. Her father didn't see the fall - but quickly jumped into the water to her rescue after her mother told him what had happened. The statement reads: "The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 29, on deck 4 of a Disney cruise ship, while the ship was in international waters somewhere between the Bahamas and Port Everglades. ‌ "Broward Sheriff's Office detectives continue to investigate the moments before a 5-year-old girl lost her balance while sitting on a railing and falling backward through a porthole. After the girl's mother alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident, he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter. "BSO detectives said after the 37-year-old father found his daughter, he treaded water until they were rescued by a tender that was launched from the ship. "The crew's 'man overboard' training and readiness paid off because they executed a successful ocean rescue. BSO investigators said the total time from the child's accidental fall to the rescue was about 20 minutes. Once rescued, the father and daughter were checked out by the ship's medical staff. ‌ "And after the ship arrived Monday morning at Port Everglades, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported them to an area hospital. The father was hospitalised. The family lives out of state. For the family's continued privacy, detectives are not releasing their names, where they live, or the details of the father's injury. Police said an investigation into the incident continues, adding: "This family is so blessed. It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome." The Disney Dream - a cruise ship with 14 decks and a capacity of 4,000 passengers - continued on to Florida as scheduled. Falls from cruise ships are often fatal. One industry report in 2019 found that only nine of 25 people who fell overboard that year survived.

Brush and debris fire temporarily closes parts of US-27 in Weston, officials say

A large brush and debris fire forced firefighters to shut down portions of U.S. Highway 27 in Broward County early Saturday morning, officials said. Around 4:30 a.m., Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the fire reported on private property near US-27 and Manatee Isles Drive in Weston. According to BSFR, the fire sparked in a remote, non-residential area and was limited to brush and accumulated debris, and no nearby structures were threatened or damaged. About 35 firefighters, along with multiple fire engines and a specialized water tender capable of carrying thousands of gallons of water, responded to the scene, where video provided by BSFR showed massive piles of debris engulfed in flames. BSFR said as a precaution, portions of US-27 were temporarily closed as firefighters battled the flames. Crews were able to bring the fire under control, and the roadway has since reopened. BSFR personnel remained on-site for several hours to extinguish residual hotspots and ensure the fire was fully contained. BSFR added that no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Man hospitalized after boat explosion in Fort Lauderdale; second boat explosion this week

A man was hospitalized after leaping from a boat that exploded into flames in Fort Lauderdale Wednesday morning, officials say, the second boat explosion in the city this week. Just before 9:30 a.m., Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue received multiple 911 calls about a boat explosion and fire just north of the Port Everglades cut on the south end of Fort Lauderdale beach, according to Frank Guzman, a spokesperson for the agency. There was one man on board the 30-foot boat, Guzman said. After the explosion, he jumped into the water and swam to shore with burn injuries. Paramedics took him to Broward Health Medical Center, where his condition is serious but not life-threatening. Fireboats from Fort Lauderdale and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue arrived to put out the boat fire, which took about 30 to 40 minutes to extinguish, Guzman said. The cause remains unknown. The fire investigator had just arrived on scene late Wednesday morning. Wednesday's explosion comes only two days after a boat explosion and fire on Memorial Day that severely injured 11 people. That explosion was caused by fuel vapors igniting, Guzman said, though officials still do not know what caused them to ignite. Flash fire on boat near Fort Lauderdale sandbar caused by fuel vapors igniting Fort Lauderdale has now had four boat explosions in about six months, Guzman said, which is above average for the timeframe; the city typically sees four to six boat explosions in a year. Two other boat explosions in December were also caused by fuel vapors igniting. On Dec. 23, one person was killed and six people were injured after an explosion at the Lauderdale Marina. 'This serves as an important reminder to all boaters to check their equipment,' Guzman said. This is a developing story, so check back for updates. Western Broward brush fire burns 700 acres

A large brush fire that erupted near U.S. 27 and Griffin Road in western Broward County on Wednesday afternoon has burned hundreds of acres. The fire broke out Wednesday around 3 p.m. in the Everglades and rapidly spread. U.S. 27 was temporarily closed just north of Griffin Road as crews worked to contain the brush fire. It has since reopened. Winds carried smoke from the fire west-southwest over parts of Weston during the day. As of Thursday afternoon, the Florida Forest Service said the fires, dubbed 27 Fire, had scorched 700 acres and were only 50% contained. It is the largest brush fire burning in the state at this time. A Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue tanker truck was parked off U.S. 27 supplying water to fire crews as surveillance planes flew overhead looking for hot spots. In addition to Broward Fire Rescue and Florida Forest Service crews, suppression units from Davie Fire Rescue were assisting. According to the state's Wildland Fire Danger Index, which estimates the potential for a fire to start and require suppression action on any given day, Broward and Miami-Dade are at a moderate risk. Collier County, to the west, was listed as high risk. From the beginning of the year through April 20, there have been 1,295 wildfires in the state which have burned more than 46,456 acres, according to the Florida Fire Service.
