Bruins GM open to trading the No. 7 pick in NHL Draft for right offer
BOSTON — On the eve of the busiest stretch of the most important offseason of his tenure, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said a lot and didn't reveal much.
He said the Bruins will take the best player available... IF they make the pick at all.

Historically, Sweeney has hinted little before making, for better or worse, bold moves. The Bruins have said they want to be competitive again quickly. A draft pick might not reach the NHL for a few years. Sweeney left the door wide open for a possible trade.
'(The scouting staff) feels really comfortable where they are and picking the top seven,' he said. 'We've had a lot of discussions over the last month. A month and a half, potential options with that pick, are still exploring them as of today, probably just as of tomorrow as well. So, we feel very comfortable with making a selection, but we're going to continue to see what might present between now and then.'
He later added.
'We have draft capital that we haven't had in past. We're perfectly happy making selections, but we're going to continue to see what the marketplace might bear, and whether that's players or move back, move up scenarios,' he said. 'So, I think we're well-positioned to be able to explore those, those years past we haven't been. I think we've got a core group of guys that, when healthy, are going to put us right back in a competitive mindset.

'And now we have to do a good job to surround that or grow it,' he continued. 'There's going to be opportunities for players to take that next step. ... We feel really good about the sort of the group of players that we have now, we have to do a good job, you know, surrounding them.'
Sweeney said if the Bruins do make a pick, they're committed to selecting the best player available regardless of position. That said, Boston comes in needing forwards. Unless the Bruins have a drastically different order than the consensus rankings, the best player will be a forward at No. 7.
After Matthew Schafer, a defenseman who is projected to be picked first, the next eight or nine highest-ranked players are all forwards.
