He's accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a dozen women. She was married to him.
She says she woke up in the middle of the night to her husband on top of her, strangling her. 'I tried to ask him to stop, to make any noise at all, but nothing came out,' Chelsea Davies remembers about the alleged incident in Calgary more than a decade ago. She tried to fight him off but eventually played dead until he released her, she claims. She ran to the kitchen, grabbed a knife and got him to leave the house. Her attacker, she alleges, was her now ex-husband, Bryan Hayward . Bryan Hayward and his former wife Chelsea Davies. Davies alleges Hayward tried to strangle her. Since then, Hayward has been charged with a dozen counts of aggravated sexual assault, plus charges for allegedly drugging 13 victims. He also faces multiple charges for publishing intimate images of some of the victims, assault, probation violation and drug offences. Following that alleged incident around 2014 she didn't know what to think. It seemed like he was trying to kill her, but worried she wouldn't be believed, she didn't report what happened at the time. In the years since, Davies has learned something even more sinister was going on, leading her down a path that has connected her with other alleged victims, police and a new-found advocacy for victims of sexual and intimate partner violence. Hayward has not been charged in connection with this incident, but the 36-year-old Hamilton man has made headlines across the country after he was charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a former partner and recording and sharing video of the assaults with others. He is also charged with possessing sedative drugs. Bryan Hayward faces a dozen aggravated sexual assault charges, plus charges for allegedly drugging 13 victims. He also faces multiple charges for publishing intimate images of some of the victims, assault, probation violation and drug offences. Hayward was one of the men identified in a W5 investigation into an alleged network of men who use porn websites to connect with other abusers and share images of their wives and girlfriends who have been drugged and raped. The CTV investigative news program and one of the victims reported Hayward to Hamilton police, leading to his arrest in May. In July, police added dozens of new charges after other alleged victims came forward. Court documents, which identify victims by initials alone, appear to show the charges relating to 13 victims spanning nearly a decade. None of the charges have been proven in court. Hayward, who remains in jail, could not be reached for comment and his lawyer, Vikram Singh, declined comment. The night before the alleged strangling incident, Davies says she was nervous about a meeting at work the next day and couldn't sleep. She complained of a headache and her husband gave her what she thought was Tylenol or Advil. She became tired and fell asleep. After awaking to being strangled, she was confused and upset about what happened. But it didn't occur to her to question what was in the pill he gave her until years later, she says. Hayward grew up in Hamilton, attending Billy Green Elementary School and Sherwood High School, Davies says. They met around 2007 or 2008 at a house known for parties across the street from Mohawk College and stayed together — off and on in the later years — until they split up in 2015. He worked delivering large appliances for many years both in Hamilton and in Calgary, where they lived from about April 2014 to June 2015. He did property maintenance in downtown Hamilton and worked renovating and renting cottages in Huntsville, starting in 2016 and spanning several years, she says. Hayward also had his own construction company that did odd jobs. Davies did not provide names or specific addresses of the companies, she says to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. But she believes it's valuable for the community to know where he has lived and work to help identify more potential survivors. Bryan Hayward faces a dozen aggravated sexual assault charges, plus charges for allegedly drugging 13 victims. He also faces multiple charges for publishing intimate images of some of the victims, assault, probation violation and drug offences. Hamilton police say there may be more victims and that some may not know they were victimized. They say Hayward used dating websites. Davies says when she first met her former husband, their relationship was 'rife with love bombing and moved very quickly.' At the time she was happy, but in hindsight she says there were major warning signs. He isolated her from friends and family. There was financial abuse, she says. He started showing signs of addiction, manipulation and 'compulsive lying' around the time she became pregnant with their daughter. There was no physical abuse until that night in Calgary, she says. 'Sometimes the butterflies you feel are your body warning you something is off,' she says. 'If it seems too good to be true, it is.' Around the time of the alleged strangling incident, Davies says Hayward would do things like cause sleep deprivation, or sabotage events that were important to her. She didn't report the assault at the time because she didn't think she would be believed. Hayward can be charming. There were no witnesses. Even worse, she feared the impact on her daughter. If she wasn't believed, could her daughter be taken from her? A troubling incident with her daughter eventually led her to tell Hamilton police. One day in June 2023, Hayward picked his daughter up from school, took her shopping, got food and then went back to his Hamilton apartment. Shortly before her daughter arrived home, Hayward told Davies their daughter wasn't feeling well. He sent his daughter home in an Uber — at the time, Hayward was driving a motorcycle. His hand had been amputated during an incident in December 2021 where he was charged with making explosives, a charge that was later withdrawn. When she arrived home, Davies says her daughter looked like she had been drugged. She took her to hospital where blood and urine tests confirmed benzodiazepine, a sedative drug, in her system. She was sent to McMaster Children's Hospital, where she stayed for several days. The Spectator has viewed medical records that confirm the sedatives in the girl's system. 'At one point, while she was first regaining consciousness, she asked me if she was going to be this way forever,' Davies recalled. 'That broke me. She was 11 at the time.' It was after this incident that Davies stared to believe she was likely drugged in Calgary. When her daughter gave a statement to Hamilton police, Davies told them about the Calgary incident. It was the first time she had ever mentioned the strangling incident to a professional. She believed it was pertinent to what happened to her daughter, but police seemed to question the relevance. Hayward has never been charged in relation to the incident with his daughter. It remains unclear how the drug got into her system. About six months after speaking with Hamilton police, Davies says she was contacted by a girlfriend of Hayward's about a Christmas present. It was a friendly conversation, as both Davies and her daughter thought highly of the woman. Bryan Hayward and his former wife Chelsea Davies. Davies says she eventually confided in her about the incident about her daughter. In return, the former girlfriend shared information about Hayward, including Reddit accounts where he allegedly posted information about making drugs and how to sober a woman up, porn accounts where personal videos had not yet been posted, and the names and screenshots of possible victims. Initially, Davies tried to give this information to Hamilton police without identifying the former girlfriend. But that wasn't enough for police to pursue charges, and eventually the former girlfriend spoke up herself. She is the first victim who led police to lay charges. 'I'll forever be grateful for the bravery and strength it took her to do that,' Davies says, adding that she was the first person who didn't make her feel crazy and helped her feel less alone. When Hayward was arrested in May, Davies got no advance warning and only learned he had been charged through media reports. 'I found out with the rest of the world,' she says. Afterwards, she contacted the sexual assault detective and W5. She wanted to know if she or her daughter were on any of the videos or photos seized by police. She was relieved to be told they were not. 'It was a breath of fresh air after feeling like I was sidelined and disbelieved for so long, to have someone on my 'team' who was looking for accountability — not only of Bryan, but of systems as well,' she says of her interactions with W5. She has also noticed a shift in how police treat her following the media attention in the case. After the initial charges were laid, the investigation into Hayward is now being led by Det. Michael Ebert of the homicide unit. Not because it's a homicide investigation, but because of the complexity and scope of the case. Since then, additional victims have been identified through the investigation, Ebert says. He refused to comment on the specific number of victims. 'The investigation is ongoing and if additional evidence is discovered, other charges may be laid,' he says. If any evidence leads to associated suspects, Ebert says police would forward that information to authorities in other jurisdictions or investigate here if the alleged crime was local. Ebert said there isn't more he can release, including about what dating websites Hayward was allegedly using or other ways he may have contacted alleged victims. That's because releasing more details may 'inadvertently interfere with the collection of some of the evidence.' Police are making 'all possible efforts' to have videos removed from websites. Hayward was already known to police and was on probation when he was arrested at a Tim Hortons drive-thru in May. In January he pleaded guilty to a drug possession charge and a provincial offence for driving while prohibited in connection to an incident where he allegedly followed a former girlfriend's car, according to court records obtained by The Spectator. Court heard that in July 2024, a woman driving on the Mountain called 911 to report Hayward had placed a tracker in her car and was now following her. She told dispatch she was on her way to the Mountain police station when Hayward blocked her car. While the tracker allegation was never proven, when police stopped Hayward in a beige Hyundai Elantra on Rymal Road, they found the woman's stolen licence plates in his vehicle. He was fined $1,000 and sentenced to one-year probation. Since the new charges were laid, Davies says she is 'overwhelmed with grief and sadness for all of the survivors, but also gratitude for them speaking to police.' The experience has also turned her into an advocate for other survivors. She plans to register a non-profit called The Golden Standard Initiative that will focus on education, peer leadership, evidence-based reform. She is also working on developing a National Sexual Assault Database . It's in early stages of development but the idea is to work with survivors, allies and professionals to develop a database where survivors can document their stories while deciding what to do and identify possible serial predators. To help build the project Davies is asking for letters of support from survivors, allies and concerned citizens. She is also looking for support from experts including lawyers and cybersecurity. 'This isn't about forcing survivors to report. It's about giving them a place to start.' Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. There was a problem with the recaptcha.
